So the need for beaches and thrills has arrived and the last few days in Sydeny had to be carefully planned in order to fit everything in that we wished to do before we leave the place that has been our home now for 4 months. As we had all been working different hours we had all done different things usually as pairs Matt and Chris and Colin and Myself. For me the one thing that I just had to do before I left was to go upto the opera house and see it up close and personal. Colin had already been up the steps to touch the masterpiece but came along for the ride anyway. On a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the sun was shining at it's best so the Opera house gleamed in all ... read more

We set off early this monring to begin the long drive over to the east coast. After travelling about 500kms we soon arrived back in the poo hole that is Tenant Creek where we stayed at the YHA - again! Not much to do outside unless you like getting insulted by drunk aborigines at every hour of the day so we settled in to watch the Hollywood Oscar ceremony, which was just as poo! Still, east coast adventure begins soon. Mike... read more

Day 1- Wellington to Picton over the Ferry. Drive to St. Arnaud Day 2- Alpine Hiking in Nelson Lakes National Park Day 3- River Rafting the Buller River, Maruia Hot Springs Day 4- Driving West Coast from Pancake Rocks to Fox Glacier Day 1- Wellington felt strikingly like San Francisco. If I knew nothing about its long history of earthquakes, maritime climate or its lively arts scene- I would still feel the same way. The people I saw were either young professionals or students. Everyone was trendy and lots of people were on the streets, giving the feeling of being downtown in NYC or SF. The skyscrapers of Central Wellington are crammed in between steep hills and the ocean. The surrounding geography lends itself to this layout as well, causing Wellington to have the highest property ... read more

From Taupo we headed on to the wonderfully named Whakapapa (note that locals tend to say "F" instead of the "Wh"....so childish I know!) Anyhoo...on the way we stopped to check out the Craters of the Moon...did the compulsory walk around the track and "ooh'd and aah'd" as appropriate. In fact I think most of us just wanted to get back on the bus and snooze (typical backpackers!). Then we stopped at a waterfall where our crazy driver and some of the lads decided it would be a great idea to jump off into the freezing water below....ice melt off the mountains above! Silly! In the meantime the rest of us watched on (although Paul did decided to do a commando style roll down a very very steep slope almost giving me heart failure..."who put that ... read more

Hey everyone, We travelled from Brisbane to a place called Rainbow beach, this was our departure point to go on our 4WD tour to Fraser Island. The day before we went on the safari we met our groups. There were 2 jeeps travelling with 7 people in each one. Oue jeep was filled with myself, Laurie and Liam and 4 other Irish people ( I know what you're thinking, where would we store all the drink!!!). The Irish people are from Clare and are 2 couples called David and Sinead and Dec and Tina. In the other jeep were 2 English girls, Rachel and Debs, a Canadian guy called Mike, a Swedish guy called Simon, an American couple called Heather and Alex (nicknamed Asslicks after he spelled his name wrong!) and Sam the Australian. We all ... read more

The two hobbits had a rather fruitless attempt on reaching Mount Doom this time. Sauron sent all the bad weather he could provoke, the clouds, the rain, and the wind had us turn back at the famous Tongariro Crossing. We felt a little bit 'doomed' and we were happy to get back to dry area afterwards...... read more

One of the greatest tricks the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. One of the greatest tricks I ever pulled was telling everyone on the Kiwi bus I was shy and not very good at making new friends. So what's wrong with a little white lie in the interests of getting to know people better? Anyway, false pretences notwithstanding, I couldn't have wished for a warmer welcome from the folks on the bus, most of whom had been together for weeks travelling the North Island. I'd heard mixed reviews before booking my ticket; most of the bad ones faulted it as a kind of New Zealand Uncovered with too much boozing and scoring but while I'm not really a man for those types of shenannigans I didn't want to appear prudish so ... read more

March 6- I arrived at 6am after the 13 hour flight, feeling good. My muscle relaxant worked and the neck pillow was crucial to my 6 hours of sleep! I drove to downtown New Zealand. The airport is nice, and customs was suprisingly efficient, cordial, intuitive and easy. First was the passport stamper, the then drug sinffing beagle and friendly kiwi handlers, and then the agricultural inspections. I felt a bit like I was going through a museum to different exhibits with friendly curators, explaining to me what I was seeing. I got my rental car keys, bought postcards and a driving atlas and some water. I brushed my teeth and 2 others were cleaning up as well. I wasn't in any hurry to start driving on the wrong side of the road at 630am, stiff ... read more

Well our adventure has finally begun. Finishing work and getting ready to go took what felt like forever, but we're here now. Our last memory of Sydney will be catching the Manly ferry on a spectacular morning and flying over the city for one last aerial view. We're staying with Danis mum Terri, little big bro Kane and their massive rottweiler, Kelly. The dog and I have taken a little bit of time to come to terms with eachother! My first impressions of Perth were of a hot, dry, dusty big country town, but then i remembered we are going to Africa next so I'd better get used to it. Played golf with Adam at Burswood then won a heap of extra travel money at the casino that night. Happy days! Also visited Freo and the ... read more
