Currently in the National Gallery of Victoria, standing in front of 'Mental Arithmetic' by Thomas Cooper Gotch (English 1854-1931). I know it sounds a bit up myself to mention art in a travel blog, but it really caught my eye. A stunning piece with a weird unrealistic depth and edges so sharp they could draw blood - captivating. ... Just staring at my first Warhol: "Self Portrait No 9" (1986). Only last week I finished his facinating biography: 'The Life and Death of Andy Warhol', and it feels kind of strange and emotional to be centimeters away from a canvas the strange little Warhola boy worked on. I can smell the synthetic paint and imagine it progressing through The Factory like to many other of his hundreds of pieces. .... Met up with Craig, from the ... read more

Well O set off bright and early for my day of extreme excercise. Started on the mountain bikes. down a long road to the bottom of the mountain then on to the good stuff, the forest riding which was like downhill motocross but with out at engine....great position, knees bent, arms stretched, bum out over the back wheel. We were all naturals at sticking our bums out!! tehe. Then on the the water for fun and frolicks in Noosa River. we weren't great at the steering but it was bloody good fun. So that was the legs worked hard on the bikes and the arms worked from paddling. Full work out. But wait theres more to come. Musical delights were offered up by an aussie band called Bordello....lets see how many great songs you can rip ... read more

I bought a pair of shoes that are....ready for it.....huh?huh? Black and white plaid. They are hideous. I love them.... We are on the East Coast - Sunshine coast to be more specific - and miss T and I just registered for a 5 day open water dive course. We are scared and excited all at the same time. The first 2 days are pool and theory and the last 3 days we live on a boat on the Great Barrier Reef and get to enjoy 8 day time dives and 2 night dives. This is going to be absolutely amazing and I cannot wait. We start our theory tomorrow and we will be on the boat on Monday. We will be purchasing an underwater camera as well. Yippeeeeeeee! After this we will be certified to ... read more

The team hiked towards the Franz Josef Glacier on Wednesday. Here they are pictured with their host from the Greymouth Rotary Club, Cedric Trounson. The glacier was beautiful but low clouds kept us from seeing the mountain tops. ... read more

Our final breakfast on the Nimrod was more basic than the others, perhaps reflecting that we had run out of food, or perhaps more likely that two of the crew had been throwing up all night thanks to the storm. We took a bus from Port Douglas, where we moored down to Cairns and being thoroughly exhausted did little but drink coffee, and go to the cinema. This is something that I had no intentions of doing, but the thought of two hours in a comfy chair that wasnt rocking and rolling was very appealing to me. I ended up going for a few drinks that evening with people I met at my hostel, and at the start of the night I couldnt decided if they were boring, shy or that there was some sort of ... read more

Mar 15 4:30 didn’t come as early as expected this morning. We got all our loot together quickly and packed up our bus. Apparently people didn’t realize Disneyland was in Anaheim and not LA which is 2 hours away and we had to leave by 5:30 in order to catch my place. I love ruining everyone’s plans, (to be honest I feel bad). I’m really just hoping my flight is at 12:30 like I thought it was. Otherwise I might be sleeping a few nights in the LA airport. I’m nervouuuuuuuuuus but pretending to be calm and collected. Here’s me wishing myself luck. AT THE AIRPORT I’m cleared through baggage check and sitting in a café beside my gate about to eat a Turkey/Havarti sandwich which looks very appetizing sitting next to me as I type. ... read more

Fabulous Queenstown Without doubt our favourite town in New Zealand. The backdrop setting is incredible - mountains, alpine forests and an enormous lake. Ultra laidback atmosphere contrasts sharply with the fact that most people who arrive here are hellbent on doing something batty (extreme sports capital of NZ, hundreds of ways to scare yourself silly and have a great time doing so). Lots of great treks (that's tramping to the Kiwis) in the surrounding area. Best cake we may ever have had - chocolate caramel slice @ Coco's. We kept returning until they ran out. Ate very well in general, gastro style nosh aplenty (finally got down to some serious NZ lamb, delicious). Hostel was a little on the shabby side, but made up for it with a great view and a crazy dog with an ... read more

Now, after a two month silence, I've decided to tell all of you a bit about my life in Melbourne...The silence was mainly a silence of dissappointment, which turned into a silence due to an extreme working schedule! Right after my entry for the Australian Open, I moved into an apartment in a northern suburb of Melbourne called Brunswick with two Japanese girls (Saori and Natsuko), a Thai girl (Emily), and her Turkish boyfriend (Oz). The first week of living in Brunswick Johnny (Jamie's friend from Newcastle) and Carina came for a 4 day visit. We ended up renting a car and drove around a bit of the city, went to the Australian Open, and Carina and I revisited the Great Ocean Road. In all honesty, I enjoyed the GOR more with a rental car, with ... read more

The following morning we contacted a few company's to see what we could get hold of...Vix cousin Louisa had recommended 1 to us but there was nothing available. So a little stuck we had to go with the option of the over night train...had to forlk out 40pounds, so said to our-selves when we got to Melb we'd get sorted with a job asap. So before getting the over night train we went on the internet to e-mail cv's to various companys and to contact agencies regarding getting a flat in the city (much cheaper than hostels, would you believe, and has a gym and pool!!!!!). So with an appointment to see a flat on the tursday as soon as we stepped of the train.......... we were making progress. The overnight train was ok apart from ... read more
