Christchurch is one of the oldest cities in New Zealand. Old means from the mid 19th century. Some buildings, the cathedral and the university mainly, have been build in an old-englisch style. But if you imagine Christchurch like one of those beautiful small towns in England, like Oxford, Stratford, Exeter, Cambridge, Canterbury, etc. then you are wrong. The university buildings are quite nice but otherwise it's a pretty modern city with little old charm. An interesting fact for physicists is that Ernest Rutherford studied here for some time. Since he had a couple of disagreements with the local university folks of his time he got his laboratory assigned in a small room under a stairway. This room can still be visited today, it's knows as "Rutherfords Den". But in later years when he made his famous ... read more

Sorry it's been a while since our last update. We've been enjoying the Aussie lifestyle too much. Anyway, we've attempted to summarise our hectic roadtrip from west to east coasts. In total, we clocked about 15,000 km's in about 80 days and were pleasantly surprised at the lack of stone chips, flat tyres, scrapes or bangs, cracked windscreens or the need to call the AA along the way (just the odd roof vent!). We were, however not so pleasantly surprised at the weather that accompanied us on the journey, in fact the split enz song "six months in a leaky boat" seemed rather apt as in fact we only managed four consecutive days of sun during this part of the trip. The sounds of "Oh you should have been here 5 days ago it was so ... read more

16-21 Mar - The Red Centre On our way back to Adelaide from the Clare Valley we got word that our car, Jenny, would take a week to fix (a week!) so another side trip was planned, this time to the real outback: the red centre. We did some last minute arrangements from Frank and Francis’ house (our kind hosts once again), which included a return flight to Alice Springs and the hire of a 4WD Landcruiser camper for 6 days. Taking a mid-morning flight had us in Alice Springs by midday - geez the baking heat really hits you out here! We didn’t look like the troupie types decked out in our business class clothes but a quick change into shorts and singlets we looked like every other backpacker tourist in the centre. After ... read more

We arrived in Cairns a few days before Cyclone Larry was due to hit therefore we couldn't do much but wait for it to pass before making plans. Fortunately Larry didn't hit Cairns too bad and we were safe in a hostel, luckily we hadn't yet picked up our campervan! Once we had our van we drove up to Port Douglas where we spent a couple of nights. We also visited Daintree village, Mossman Gorge and tried to head up to Cape Tribulation. We didn't get far as the road was flooded from the cyclone so we never even made it across the Daintree River. We passed back through Cairns and then headed inland to the Atherton Tablelands. We went to Millaa Millaa Falls (where they filmed a Timotei advert years ago). Most of the other ... read more

Woke ridiculously early to book, (at the request of Donna and Jenny), a seat for the first session of the Rugby 7's that morning. I'd not really planned to see any sporting events, althought I was vaguley tempted by the this one if anything, and maybe a spot of mens diving.... ;) I've moved into The Greenhouse on Flinders Street yesterday, (not wanting to outstay my welcome on Miranda's couch), the hostel turns out to be a really nice, slap bang in the middle of the city, well worth a stay: lovely roof garden, big TV lounge and kitchen and best of all .... communal showers - yes, I know, I'm going to hell. Anyway, we got the the Telstra Dome and I was majorly hungover from the 2 litres of boxed white wine, (classy, I ... read more

Where do I Start? So pretty much Kayla and I have decided that Sailing through the Whitsunday Islands is the most relaxing , crazy , beautiful thing we have ever experienced. Kayla and I arrived at Airlie Beach on Sunday , the little town that all the amazing looking sailboats depart from to explore the islands . All together the trip cost us about $270 , and it was worth every penny. We had all of our meals included , accomodation at the resort on the island ..which we stayed on every night after we had a long days of sailing , and a bunch of vouchers for free internet (big bonus ) . There were 32 people on the boat ,plus the hostess Kenzie..who cooked all of our meals for 32 people...she was superwoman. Skipper ... read more

As the title suggests we finally found Skinny some shoes! Quite a while later we finally found the lagoon too! Its quite small and not as pretty as the others we've been to but it has sand in and around the water, and a ot of sun beaming on it so I'm not complaining!... read more
