25/02/10 Thought we’d check on results of West Coast Brewery shares - tastes good and they have a new brewer arriving shortly. 26/02/10 Picked up at 10am to do the Stockton Mine Tour, this is the largest coal mine in the country and employs up to 850 staff (including contractors). This trip was great and were able to get up close and personal with the big machinery working. The tyres on the large trucks cost $16000 each! On return we headed to Charleston, a town with a pub, motel, hotel and a few houses, was once a thriving gold mining town of over 14000 people in the late 1860s. It at 72 hotels, 2 breweries, 3 banks, 3 schools etc. The takings at the hotels were so great, so they say, that the tills weren’t large ... read more

Awoke to another fine sunny morning at Fox Glacier Holiday Park. Because we arrived so late the previous night, it was a pleasant surprise to step outside the motorhome to the magnificent vistas of the snowed capped mountains surrounding the small township of Fox Glacier. The Fox Glacier Holiday Park was under extensive renovations, the recently opened new amenities centre were absolutely first class, as were the spacious motorhome sites that surrounded the centre. Each site had easy access to all amenities. We had breakfast, and I went to the office to pay for our site, after spending 20 minutes trying to find somebody to take my money, I found the Manager cleaning the bathrooms. He was very appreciative of my honesty considering he did not even realise that we were on a site overnight.....it was ... read more

Maybe not dirty, but certainly quick: We’ve obviously lost steam on this blogging thing - so much has happened since Uncle Chris came and left. In a nutshell: Friends Alistair, Diane and their two beautiful, wonderful kids came to spend Christmas here. The 25th was understated - rotten turkey replaced by KD, walk in town wearing shorts and t-shirts, ultimately invading friends who generously fed and wined all nine of us with no advance warning. On Boxing Day we headed up to Karamea where Diane, kids and I hung out at a swish lodge on the coast while Paul and Alistair walked the Heaphy trail for four days. New Year’s Eve back in Reefton was a blast - the town gathered at the gas station just before midnight where a brass band played a couple of ... read more

Some days just cry out for a blog entry. Today was one of those days. Nothing spectacular happened, but taken together it was just a good day. The kids are now almost entirely self-sufficient in getting themselves out to school. I completed a computer rebuild back at the office - all done remotely of course. Tackled a number of issues for our house renovation. Went for a run along the river before the kids came home from school. Against all odds, helped Adrianne find a very special ring which she lost swiming down by the river yesterday and then laid out in the sun while the kids floated by in the river. A flat white courtesy of Marg at the Broadway Tea Rooms followed by a light dinner at Dawsons. Attended an ITP (tourism board) event ... read more

We saw Marie off this morning on the "bus" to Christchurch. She'll be back in Toronto in about 30 hours, no doubt glad to be sleeping in her own bed. We had a fine visit and we are sending her back with a much improved, although still not perfect Kiwi accent. The weather was almost perfect. While Marie was here we had almost no rain (1 mm all last week). However, there has been a real deluge in the last 24 hours to make up for it. It was good weather for Marie to head home. The house was strangely quiet, as I got caught up the with laundry and scrubbing the mold out of the shower once again. A bug of some kind is sweeping through the family. Josh came home from school today feeling ... read more

The blog has been down for a few days. In fact the whole travelblog.com website crashed and thousands of blog entries were erased. About 25 of our entries were lost. Thankfully, I just happened to back-up the website the day it went down and I have been able to restore the lost entries. Lesson: don't rely on on-line services to safely store your data. Always have your own backup. I was very lucky to have backed up. It was the first time I had backed up in several weeks. I am going to backup every week from now on. ... read more

Minus 11 here, on July 15th - inside; it's worse out. Apparently that's unheard of. No hot water, no phone, intermittent electricity. Shouldn't have tweaked Fate on yesterday's blog. Blogg for Jurg. Enjoy your comfort out there.... read more

Winter has finally taken root here in Reefton. Most mornings there is a thick layer of frost on the ground. This is frequently accompanied by very thick fog. The fog can hang over the town all day, but generally breaks up by mid-afternoon. The fog seems to be created by the surrounding geography - Reefton is located in a basin surrounded by mountains. Up on the lookout, (about 200 metres higher) the skies are often completely clear. The attached picture was taken up in the mountains last week when the town was covered by an almost impenetrable fog. The mornings are quite cool - often a few degrees below zero. As we have no real heat to speak of in the bedrooms, getting up is not generally an encouraging thought. We do have electric blankets so ... read more

Paul has been fighting a bug and has charged me, Astrid, with summarizing the last three weeks, so here goes: The week before last was remarkable because Josh was attacked by another child at school. The fact that Precious might be the target of anybody's anger was disturbing in itself, but when the school called hoping to confirm that he had arrived home safely after class we knew we had a problem. A few days of researching alternatives passed, culminating in our deciding to switch the two younger kids to the other school in town. The other school only goes to year 8 so Avery has to stay where she is. We met with Father Phil who made it his business to thoroughly interrogate Paul to determine if his progeny might be more Catholic than not, ... read more
