They are certain situations that you find yourself in when living on the road. One is the constant good byes that have to be said. And this is the situation that I find myself in once again. I have been in Lake Tekapo for nearly 4 months and have met some great people and have shared some great times with them. We kept each other occupied on boring days, road tripped and celebrated together. Not to mention the dinner parties, house parties, days on the slopes, movie nights, day hikes and even guitar sessions at the lake. Looking back at my time in this town I remember the good times, the smiles and the laughter. I do remember the days of cabin fever, when the town was covered in snow, the days short and the nights ... read more

Speed & Water!! Day 5: The day was perfect - crisp and cold with fresh snow on the Remarkables. We rug up and join a happy noisy netball team from Canberrra for a jetboat ride in the upper Shooter Valley. We climb past the ski fields at Coronet Peak (still open) and on a road that is SCARY - six years in building the road is a gravel rollercoaster that hugs the sides of the mountains winding about an hour to the Shooter Valley - once a thriving gold town. The netball team screams the whole way. The jet boats are the latest - low profile and very fast - we sit in the front zooming over the crystal clear waters and gravel - Peter is very happy. We fly past the location from Lord of ... read more

Thursday was a beautiful sunny day here in Lake Tekapo. Sofia, Melisa and I had decided to have a little picnic out at Lake Alexadrina. We spent the day just laughing, joking and making plans. Somewhere in one of these conversations the topic of taking the Mt Cook scenic flight popped up. We knew we got a locals discount so why not. Upon returning into town we found ourselves in the Air Safari office getting prices and flight times. The 50% off discount helped encourage our decision and we decided Saturday morning was a good day (depending on weather and flight availability). After a quick phone call on saturday morning, we were on our way into the Tekapo office then put into the van and driven out to the airport. The weather was beautiful, with no ... read more

I had planned a little road trip for Monday morning with some friends to go snow boarding at Mount Dobson. My alarm clock woke me up way earlier then I am used to (it was 8:30 am). I pulled back the curtains to see a beautiful sunny morning. But after further investigation we discovered Mt Dobson was closed. I was bummed because I really wanted to go but I knew I would go soon. That afternoon at work a few of the staff were talking about snowboarding on Wednesday. Then my buddy Steve, who was just driving through Tekapo, dropped in at work. He was off to Wanaka, but would be back on Tuesday night so he could join us on the slopes Wednesday. By the end of my shift we had several people recruited for ... read more

I know, it's been a while since the last update... But there have been a few roadblocks. first off, I was using the internet at work for these updates, and since, the wireless connection is no longer. something about a massive bill or something, so they canned the service. Fair enough. Another problem was my trial version of Microsoft Word ran out, and I don't want to pay the $150 CDN to 'convert' to the full version. It's highway robbery I say. Life has been good in Tekapo. Lately, or since I've been working here, I've fallen into a life of a sort of routine. I sleep in the same bed at night. I make lunches to eat the next day at work. I wake up more or less around the same time when I have ... read more

Hello Just a little update of the last leg of my journey before spending time with my family and friends here before setting off home. After Queenstown the bus took me to Dunedin, a scottish settlement on the East Coast of the South Island. Dunedin literally means "Edinburgh Of The South" I only spent an afternoon there as I needed to keep moving on the bus to make sure that I could spend a week at Catherine and Adams in Christchurch and a long weekend up with Katie and Sandy in Auckland before my flight home. The Irish people from Queenstown were there again so I met back up with them. I spent my afternoon wandering around the city. There is an octagon shape in the city which has a statue of Robbie Burns and most ... read more

It has been three months since I left my home in Canada. It was the end of winter. Now I am in the midst of a New Zealand winter. The sun has been hiding for close to a week now but it does make the odd guest appearance. It has been sometime since I have published a blog. The only excuse I have is that life as an employed person is less eventful. But an update is required and here it is. So I was the lone cook at Pepe's for a few days then I got two new co workers. Things at the job are going very well. Rafael and Tomas are talented pizza makers, (which happens to be a skill that I lightly posses). We listen to rock and roll during prep time, followed ... read more

"You know you have a good friend when you tell them a dozen times that you don't have enough money for snowboarding, and they cover your expenses and convince you to go anyway." - Cathy There were a few reasons Dave was so persistent in his efforts in persuading us to go snowboarding. Firstly, in celebration of their 30th anniversary, Mt Dobson was having an open day with free snowboarding. Secondly, it was Eriko, his girlfriend's birthday, and he really wanted to take her out for a special weekend. Thirdly, friends of his own a set of beautiful chalet's right on Lake Takepo that they let us use at a discounted rate. And fourthly, weeks and weeks of drearly rain and cold have finally paid off by covering the mountain with a 1m snow base! That ... read more

Lake Tekapo is simply stunning. This glacier-fed lake is set in Mackenzie country, a region of rolling, dry grasslands. The view as we turned the corner and caught our first glimpse of the snow capped Southern Alps reflected in the water was breathtaking. The Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935, is a simple stone interdenominational church with a cross silhouetted against the snow clad peaks. Inside, the magical views of serene lake and towering mountains are framed beautifully by the picture window in front of the altar. The perfect setting for the perfect day!... read more
