We stopped off on the way to Lake Tekapo at Maeoraki Boulders which are really cool. It basically a load of round boulders dotted along the shoreline, but they look really bizarre, you'll have to see the pics. Lake Tekapo itself is amazing. Impossibly blue lake, surrounded by snowy mountains, and our hostel was a lodge right on the lake. We arrived late afternoon, so only a brief chance to see the lake & town. I also walked up to the outdoor hot pools, with the intention of taking a dip. But it must have been some after school club or something, as it was full of Primary school kids splashing around........ i'd have looked decidely dodgy if i'd have sat in the middle of them all in my obsence swimshorts, so i gave it a ... read more

It was a few weeks ago when I confirmed a job in Lake Tekapo. I was to start on the 19th of June but then plans changed and I was asked to come a few days earlier. It was a big thing for me to agree to over 3 months of employment in some place that I had never been. As I am the backpacker who rarely plans any more then 12 hours ahead, 3 and a half months is an eternity. I had asked around about Lake Tekapo to other backpackers. Everyone had said the same two things. The first, Lake Tekapo is beautiful and secondly, that Lake Tekapo is small. And this was all the insight that I got about the place. Upon arrival I was shocked at the accuracy of my mini survey ... read more

Hey guys, This is long overdue, and I apologize for the wait! It’s been a crazy little while for us here in NZ. A car has been bought, and we finally landed a job. So enjoy the read… it might take a while if you read all the way through. We’re having a wicked time here. Unfortunately I can't seem to upload my Bungy jump video, so the pics will have to do. But we start way back in Christchurch, on Thursday, April 30th. Thursday, April 30: Thursday was taken to try out Turner’s again. We reviewed the paperwork from the previous session. We looked to see how many exactly ended up selling in the low range. We figured one in three cars ended up selling either below the suggested price range or close to the ... read more

On Good Friday, after a good breakfast of hot cross buns, we headed west out of Christchurch and joined the Inland Scenic Route 72 just past Darfield. This is a much nicer drive into the Southern Alps than the more direct routes. We were re-tracing our route taken over four years ago (Easter 2005) as chronicled in this very same blog. To that end, after passing through Rakaia Gorge, we detoured to Peel Forest in order to do the 'Big Tree Walk' - an amazing still native woodland, full of big trees (mainly giant Totara) and lots of fantastic NZ birdlife - Silvereye, Bell Birds and huges NZ Wood Pigeons among the highlights... After our walk, we stopped to pick up lunch in Geraldine and then continued on our journey to Lake Tekapo stopping for a ... read more

We arrived in Tekapo just after lunch where the whole town was covered in snow. It was also freezing. Quickly we walked up the street to our lodgings to dump our stuff and more importantly get into somewhere warm. We had chosen, as usual, the cheapest option but to our surprise it turned out the cheapest option isn't always the worst. I think I can safely say that the Tailor-made backpackers is the nicest and most welcome place we have stayed in New Zealand so far. When we arrived we were welcomed by the owner who was incredibly friendly, gave us tons of information and advice and even gave Helen a rose that he had just pruned from the grounds. Its always nice when your first experience somewhere goes well, immediatly we knew we were going ... read more

28/3/09 = Mt John and the view of Lake Tekapo Really good nights sleep last night and only woke up this morning at 7:45 because everyone else was awake; could have slept forever. Snoozed in bed until 8:15, then got up and made nice cup of tea. Got back into bed with tea and wrote diary for a while. So nice to get up and not be in a rush. Festered there until 9, then got up, had porridge, got changed and set off out at 10am = a much more sociable hour. Headed out to our walk up Mt John = great views of Lake Tekapo below. Supposed to be a 6hr walk; sure it wouldn't take that long. Set off along road, turning at Hot Springs and walking up towards Mt John. Clouds of ... read more

28th March 2009 - A WALK UP MOUNT JOHN & PRETTY LAKE TEKAPO!! I woke up early and went to have breakfast and watch TV for a while until Nat got up. We weren’t in a rush today and took our time getting ready and sorting out our things for the day before setting out. We planned to do the walk up to Mount John Observatory and back to the town around the lakeside. We expected it to take a good 5 hours or so from the information we had and so we were on our way by 10.30am We set off on the first part of the walk taking us through town and along the lakeside. Nat tried to phone Michelle (one of our friends from home) along the way but got cut off due ... read more

27th March 2009 - WIND IS A CYCLISTS NIGHTMARE & ARRIVAL AT LAKE TEKAPO!! I got up at 7.45am, dressed and prepared for the day. Other people who were staying at the hut that had come from Lake Tekapo kept on telling us what a lovely flat ride it was. Easily said when you travel along it by car...our peddlers paradise book told a slightly different story, which had plenty more ups than downs! It was only 58km though so I was sure we would get there! We had been more concerned about the weather as rain was on the agenda but it looked ok when we got up and we crossed our fingers that we would stay ahead of the rain throughout the day. It was pretty cloudy when we set out and I did ... read more

27/3/09 = The Galeforce Ride to Lake Tekapo Woke up early for usual reason and was just in time to see final stages on sunrise. Shuffled out to road to watch it properly. Missed the red of sky, but orange stage was pretty impressive anyway. Had porridge breakfast and watched morning news; so nice to be staying in a little house. Made lunch then, got changed and set off on journey at 9:20. Quite warm and no signs of rain even though news forecasted it. Fingers crossed. Cycled the tough 8kms back to Mt Cook turn off - steady incline all way - and then looked forward to it getting easier. It wasn’t to be. Hardest bit was still to come. Knew there were hills and possibility of rain, but nobody said anything about wind!...... Cycled ... read more
