If you were reading this blog in 2005, you may remember our efforts to see the highest mountain in the Southern Alps (and indeed Australasia) and our repeated thwartings by cloud, rain and weather. Back then, we were beginning to think that anywhere marked on the map as "Aoraki/Mount Cook View" was either part of an elaborate conspiracy or the perpetuation of a cruel joke. Well, on Sunday the weather was incredible, and we headed out via the Mackenzie country, through Geraldine and Fairlie, first to Lake Tekapo and then the brilliant blue Lake Pukaki...and there it was! All 3,754m (12,316 ft) of it! And well worth the 4 hour drive and the 3+ year wait.... read more

traveling South in the rain today we left Lake Tekapo (after a quick stop over at teh church on the lake). it rained over night, and continued to rain as we drove. AS we moved on it got colder adn colder, we stopped at a few Lord Of the rings film sites, then headed into the mountains, every corner was stunning snow capped mountaines . AS we got towards Lindus pass (a road over a mountain the rain got heavier adn heavier, the cars comig towards us were covered in this strange white powder! Then the rain suddenly turned thicker! It was snowing. WE stopped at the top (along with a few other mad Aussies) and the boys had a ball throwing snowballs. Given our debarcle with the snow chains we were glad to see the ... read more

snow snow and skating Sunday 20th Today we picked up our camper van and left Christchurch (after a huge breaky at Sophie’s even better than dinner) we didn’t need lunch and had to force dinner! We headed south to Lake Tekapo.. A scenic glacial lake with a very famous church right on the banks of the lake. No arguing here and Christian denomination takes turns at using it. Imagine sitting in the pews praising God looking over His wonder of a lake and snow capped mountain peaks. Following dinner we went ice-skating, Whilst Jeremy Tom and I held onto the rails I looked up to see Callum step onto the ice and promptly skate perfectly! The owners thought he had done it before. Next thing we know is he has a hockey stick on his hand ... read more

Part I of our Tour of New Zealand ski fields -Mt. Dobson, Roundhill and Ohau! What a remarkable trip this was with so many interesting and diverse skiing options - and none like those in the US! It was an amazing opportunity to be able to ski at five different locations. You can't call them "ski resorts" like we would in the US, because resorts they are not. They are called "ski fields' in New Zealand, but fields they are not either. This is serious stuff - no lounges with hot chocolate and schnapps. or long expensive lunches in a heated restaurant. We were lucky to find any food at Mt. Dobson (meat pies, chips and chocolate), at Roundhill most people brought their own girlls and were grilling next to their cars on the slopes (although, ... read more

NZ Day 14 Snow Day you say…..Don’t mind if I do! Seasons Greetings Dear Family and Friends, I can’t believe it’s that time of year again. It always seems to go so fast and I never seem to get a holiday card out in time. I have done so much since last Christmas season it will be hard to fill you in on all the happenings in this short Holiday Card but I will try……….I’ve been upside down for a while and I’ve had blast……. Wait! It’s July Not time for holiday cards, but it sure seems like it with all of the snow outside. Today while we were hiking Sarah and I were singing Christmas carols. I thought about writing a holiday card because of good ole Bing singing in my mind about dreaming ... read more

For år tilbage havde NZ 60 millioner får, men ... read more

We've done a lot since my last entry, so hopefully I'll manage to remember everything we have done since! From Queenstown we headed to Te Anau, where we went on a trip to some glow worm caves and trusted some man and a rope with our lives (maybe not, seeing as we can swim!) in some pitch black cave and a boat as he pulled us round and kept bashing the cave walls! We saw lots of glow worms though and had a nice trip on Lake Te Anau. The next day we drove up to Milford Sound, through the Homer Tunnel and then down towards the sound (actually a fjord!). We took a nice trip on the fjord and headed out to sea and back in, sadly we saw no penguins, but we saw some ... read more

From Christchurch we drive to Lake Tekapo about 4 - 5 hours drive, its different from driving in OZ here as the roads are like home at time twisting and turning all the time unlike oz where all roads are straight forever. Lake Takepo is just an area of beauty really close to Mount Cook, while were here we climb up mount John as most actiivties have stopped here for the winter until skiing begins... read more

Sheryll's flight was late in from Auckland, so I spent the spare time on the observation deck up on the roof of the Airport watching the flights arrive and depart as the sun went down over the Canterbury Plains was a wonderful site. The following morning we were up early and around the corner from the Hostel to the Moko Cafe for a big bowl of Muesli, with fresh fruit and yogurt and Latte all for $10. Into Pak n Save for a few supplies and back on State Highway 1 again, heading for Tinwald just out of Ashburton, where "The Plains Vintage Railway" operate out of the Tinwald Domain. It wasn't an open day but we were able to look through windows at the Railcar and Steam Engine in the sheds. A must come back ... read more
