After mountains, we went to the lovely valleys and lake of Tekapo. Just beautiful. More photos (I couldn't help it) and more trekking around! we stayed in a gorgeous little hostel with a view on the lake.... read more

Christchurch eh? Christchurch is interesting, in so far as, it's not interesting at all. One would expect New Zealand's second biggest city to have some sort of pazzaz or life to it, but turns out it doesn't. We arrived (several hours later than planned thanks to delays at the airport) to our hostel at around midnight, feeling a little dazed and confused. Our taximan from the airport had helpfully informed us that we were now as far away as possible from home, a grand total of 13hours ahead. Thanks mate; god forbid any of us should be feeling homesick! We were greeted at the YHA hostel by a ridiculously enthusiastic porter (who in their right mind is happy about opening the door to backpackers in the middle of the night??), who shouted "COOL!" to every response ... read more

So we headed off from Arthur's Pass to Lake Tekapo. We left the mountains and were soon back on to the Canterbury plains heading south, stopping briefly for lunch in Methven. Then back towards the mountains and the southern lakes. The landscape changes dramatically along the way. One minute you are in Lord of the Rings country, then you are in Wild West style plains, then by beautiful mountain lakes. Upon first sight of the lake even from a distance, the first thing you marvel at is it's colour. It litterally makes you say wow out loud! It is a really light brilliant blue, that is due to the glacial water that arrives into the lake full of glacial dust that was once rocks, grounded over years into a fine dust that sits in the water ... read more

Saturday 9th Thank goodness I woke 650am, as my alarm clock has stuck at 1130! Quick dress/finish pack/brekkie before Campbell, with Isaak/Luke, takes me into the city centre to catch my bus. I'm fairly sure the bus time is 815, but it could be 8am so I want to be sure I'm on time. We get into town and the Octogon, where my stop is, is blocked off, so we find the 815 backpackers and wait there and sure enough the bus turns up on time! Waving goodbye, I find out our driver is Greg before we stop at our first stop - Baldwin Street - in the Guineness Book of Records. Is quite a hard climb as you can imagine but it's another photo opportunity! Back on the bus for an hour or so to ... read more

The 3 musketeers never would have got away with all the stuff that we have. Jammed in......if you were thumbing on the side of the road, your thumbs-up would have been wasted on us. Lake Tekapo was our first stop. Overnight only. It's funny how accustomed you become to moving form place-to-place daily & making yourself at home. First you look at the kitchen to see if there are any spices, tea or free stuff, then check out the bathrooms to rate the facilities & the risk of catching something & finally surveying the sleeping quaters to decide if you should wait to go to bed until it's absolutely necessary! Anyway this is how we live now & it's only when you meet people from the real world like Grace's boyfriend who find it a bit ... read more

Today we got our second rental car and headed on our drive around the South Island. This car is in MUCH better shape than that little Toyota Starlet we had before. We told these guys that we had a Starlet the last time and they actually laughed out loud. We drove about 3 hours south to Lake Tekapo (Tick-a-po). This is a very blue alpine lake. It’s famous for the Church of the Good Shepherd and the monument built to the Sheep Dog who is so useful here. Our hotel is right on the lake, has views to the church and the monument and it has wireless. What more can you ask for? We took a nice hike and some nice pictures. See Amy’s attempt to take some beauty art shots. In the evening, we drove ... read more

Before leaving Australia, while we were waiting to board our plane, imagine our excitement when we saw the Airbus A380!! Ha ha ok, we were not excited exactly but it was pretty cool as it's been on the news everywhere! It's huge! Shame we had to get on a very tired looking JetStar Boeing for our short hop across to New Zealand - which by the way was delayed...and they didn't even give us a free drink! Gutted. Anyway....we arrived into Christchurch International airport and ready to start the final phase of our travelling bit! The first thing we cottoned onto was how cold we suddenly were! We had just come from 25-32 degrees temps and here it was about 13!! But we didn't care, even though it was a slight shock to the system! Even ... read more

So I went to Lake Tekapo for one night a few weeks ago. It wasn't very exciting. It was very windy. We walked to the top of Mt John and it was so windy that it was difficult to walk and we got head aches. And the salmon farm road was closed due to wind which is sad 'cos I really wanted to feed salmon. It's not like I can do that in Christchurch anytime I want! *sarcasm* There were cute little bunnies bouncing around the holiday park we stayed in. We got a little cabin to ourselves for $50 there, cheaper than the backpacker dorms in the area. Israel saw one of the birds he wanted to. I think it was a black stilt? I liked them cos they were shiny. An iceskating rink had ... read more

Our first stop of the morning, before we'd even left Dunedin, was at the worlds steepest street. Apparently a map of Dunedin was sent to England to have the streets designed but they didn't put in the contours so some streets are ridiculously steep - like this one!! The next stop of the day was at a place called Moeraki Boulderswhich were round boulders in on the beach and in the sea! You have to see the pics, will try and get them uploaded asap! We sat and had a coffee and looked over the beach which was stunning, then back on the bus. The country side we were driving in was very different again! It was alot flatter with the biggest water distibuter things that were literally miles long!! They were using these so that ... read more
