The last couple of days have made my arms sore. On Friday we were in Abel Tasman park, a beautiful chunk of mountains and beaches on the north shore of the south island. We went on a sea kayaking tour....in a so-called divorce kayak (see pic). Our group was dropped off at the crack of dawn several miles up the coast, and we had to paddle back, stopping at beautiful secluded beaches along the way. Weather was GORGEOUS, as a result I got a little burnt and Gary got VERY burnt. From beaches to glaciers...yesterday was spent ice climbing on the Franz Josef glacier. The glacier itself was very cool to hike around on, lots of chasms and towering chunks of ice to hike around. The climbing itself was fun but VERY tiring.... Today we're in ... read more

The scenery in New Zealand is impossible to describe, it truely is amazing, and so completely different as you journey through the country. But nowhere is more impressive and awe inspiring as the southern fiordland, and today we journey to Milford Sound fiord to take a boat cruise. The drive itself is amazing, twisting through mountains and valleys. Then through the Homer Tunnel, a bizarre dimly lit hole blasted down through a mountain and out to Milford Sound on the other side. The day is cloudy but clear, and the view is stunning, contrasting the black tannin-stained water with the steep rocky sides of the mountains, Mitre Peak being the highest. We boarded the Mitre Peak cruise boat, a small boat which was much better for close up views of the scenery, and free tea, always ... read more

Wow!! I don't think I have ever since so many beautiful scenery in my life...well, i've said that a few times during this trip but seriously, today was awesome (Osome, like the kiwis say it)!! It was a really long day leaving at 7 am this morning and then driving (on the Magic bus!) for 2 hours towards Te Anau...The road taking us there was wonderful...Hips (lots) of sheeps and cows just chillin' as the sun rise on the moutains behing them...WOW... We stayed in Te Anau for a big 20 minutes as we needed to be the first bus in line to get to Milford Sound to catch our bus and be the first at the picture spots places on the road!! :) Our bus driver was just skipping every other coach on the road...Good ... read more

Janet and I survived the Kepler Track and I my first backpacking adventure. We returned to Te Anau today at about one o'clock after an easy 4.5 hour hike through forest. The tramp was excellent, a wonderful experience and a lot of fun. Day one was an uphill hike through forest, which took us about 5 hours to complete. This was our one day of beautiful weather and it was definately nice since the views from our first hut were incredible. Because of weather warnings we decided to get an early start on day two--an alpine hike famous for being trecherous during windy periods. Although we couldn't see much of the view, the hike was still fantastic and a lot of fun. Dispite rain and wind we still had a good day of hiking (5.5 hrs) ... read more

Milford Sound was our next stop; we decided to go here after numerous recommendations from people we had met. It was a 5 hour drive but we left early after being woken up by an extremely loud snorer in our dorm. On the way we made a couple of stops, one was at ‘Mirror Lakes’, and ‘Homer Alpine’ for a walk and look around. Whilst driving in NZ there are so many places to stop and have a look you have to be selective or you will be stopping every 10 minutes, which was the best thing about having a car and not being in a coach where you don’t have that option. Milford Sound is in the Fiordland National Park and is New Zealand’s largest of these parks. Once in the National Parkland there are ... read more

I thought I would write just a quick note before I leave on the Kepler Track. Yesterday Janet and I went to Milford Sound (which is actually a Fiord, discoverers named it incorrectly) a truely beautiful place--except for the sandflies. Departing Te Anau early we were able to see the mountains of the area with the reflection of the rising sun and morning mist . . . amazing. We went on a two hour cruise around the Sound and saw DOLPHINS!!! I've never seen wild dolphins before, so it was the highlight of the cruise. On the way back to Te Anau we stopped to take a hike to Lake Marian, a hike that was suggested to Janet by a Kiwi who used to work for the Department of Conservation. The hike took about 4 hours, ... read more

After spending two days in Arrowtown Janet and I have moved on to Te Anau. When we left Wanaka there were clouds looming in the sky and sure enough by the time we arrived in Arrowtown it had started to rain. We went to lunch at a restaurant called Saffron, which we had heard was one of the best restaurants in the world. One of the best steaks I've ever had . . . We then wandered around town for a bit trying to find a Lord of the Rings filming location that was close to the city center. On our search it started raining, but we didn't let the weather get us down. We returned to our accommodation (where the lodge our room was in was called the Oregon lodge :) to pick up Bill ... read more

Milford Sound Coach and Nature Cruise Well I just had to see it. Milford Sound so I booked a coach and cruise. It was much better than your large tourist buses. Its a small van with only 8 of us. The driver stops at a number of different scenic sites along the way and there are 3 short hikes. The drive to Milford is as impressive as the cruise. It has the magesty like Mt. Rainier. We drove from Lake Te Anau from the lake across grasslands and then entered the bush. The forest was old and had been protected since the 1800s. We stopped to drop of some local mail and food to a couple of homesteads (different). Then on to Mirror Lakes in the early morning. The lakes were in shadow but the surrounding ... read more

Hello again, The highlight of the last week or so has to be kayaking amongst a pod of 30 or so dolphins on Doubtful Sound yesterday. I was grinning from ear to ear! I hope to be swimming with some in Kaikoura in a few weeks too, this was an added bonus. No idea if I got any shots with my disposable waterproof camera, tried to watch them more than take pictures. The Kepler Track (3 days walking) rejuvenated me mentally and emotionally for sure - also had a good start with phone calls to Fiona on Sunday and Helen on Monday - definitely perked me up - thanks! The middle day up on the ridge was very windy - got blown over once, fortunately was in a path with banks either side so just sat ... read more
