After Queenstown, we headed further south to a small town of Te Anau, where is the area to visit teh 'Milford Sounds' which is an amazing boat ride through the sounds. Seeing and hearing some of the nautural wonders of New Zealand. As we had half a day to spare, we did something else Lorraine at least hasn't tried before...... Riding, and I mean horse riding, before anyone thinks anything else! Laugh, is not the word..........Lorraine, chose a belter of a horse to match her personailty.....A lazy tw@t which did nothing but eat and fart all day....... The views were out of this world.... read more

We have been having so much fun in the campervan- but it gets really cold at night, so have resorted to having the two sleeping bags and duvet and sheep at night, and its still cold - oh well - we are used to it being hardened british. Hey another idea of how cold it is, they gave us snow chains when we rented the van - how cool is that!!! hopefully we wont have ot use it! Just a quick one as we are in a remote place and the net is expensive....went to see some seals and penguins today, and the moreaki boulders - beck you will have to explain them to me!!!! Star gazed last night which was just amazing cos there was literally no light polution and the sky was full of ... read more

Described as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’, Milford Sound is an area of magnificent natural beauty. I planned my trip there perfectly to stay the night in the backpackers on shore and join one of the cruises early the following morning to explore the full 22km of Milford Sound by boat. At a relatively quiet time of year for visitors there was only myself, a traveller from Ireland, who’d been staying in the same hostel, the tour guide and the captain making the excursion! With waterfalls plunging hundreds of metres into the fiord it was all pretty spectacular, complemented with astonishing geographical facts and figures, many opportunities to take photographs of the scenery and each other, and even included a free coffee and muffin! Really the best part of the experience for me was the ... read more

Heeeeey everyone! Just a brief update as it hasn't been that long, but here's what we've been up to the last few days. Hope you all enjoyed the pictures from last time...it took us 3 hours to upload them all and they're not officially on snapfish so if you haven't gotten a copy of them from me, let me know and I'll send you a link. OH yeah, and just in case I wasn't clear, we titled the last entry Ben-E-dryl because the sandflies here rather irritating and have taken a liking to Ben and my sweeeet American blood. Okay, so after setting up camp in the Wanaka internet cafe, we went for a nice long walk around the lake and got a taste for some of the lovely architecture of NZ expensive lake homes. We ... read more

Well today I'm in Te Anau... not Queenstown as originally intended. That is why you didn't get any pictures today... I'm sorry. I can't upload pics from anyplace in town. But I did catch up the blogs. I may go back tomorrow and upload pics. It depends on what time I get out of here. I have to be in Picton on Saturday morning and its 17-18 hours away. Oh and if you are reading this, you should know that I've typed like 6 blogs today, so you read them all if you want... the first one I typed today is "The Big Green Hookup". I stayed in Te Anau for a wild variety of reasons, all of which involve last night and the way I feel today. But that is neither here nor there. I ... read more

I first arrived in Te Anau on the 5th of April and promptly took off for Milford Sound, driving up the Milford Rd....spectacular is all I can say. At one point you go through a tunnel, that is over 1KM long. It goes right through this vertical wall of rock. I really couldn't see any way up and over this wall at all, it is sheer. In Milford I did a day's sea kayaking trip.... once again... spectacular. I really can't describe in words what I saw. I hope my pictures do, we'll see. Also it was rainy and cloudy my whole time in and around Milford. Ok, back to Milford.... just spectacular. Though we couldn't see the tops of any of the mountains around because of clouds. The best part of the rain and clouds ... read more

Milford Sound is one of the highlights of New Zealand, and the only way to see it is by helicopter, or by cruise. It was formed by a glacier, so it should be called a fjord instead of a sound (apparently!), but it is basically a big body of water, surrounded by enormous, lush green mountains, with waterfalls cascading down from above from every direction. Not the most exciting thing I've ever done, but a perfect sample of the country's outstanding natural beauty. The best thing was the underwater observatory. In only 3 places in the world, there are areas underwater where the sealife of the ocean is replicated inland, as here the seawater is trapped by a layer of freshwater on top. The one here is the most accessible of the three. So we walked ... read more

Part two... Since going kayaking north of Vancouver BC two summers ago I have been dreaming about going sea kayaking again. When I decided to travel to New Zealand I read about Fiordland National Park and instantly the only activity I didn't want to miss in NZ was a 3 day kayaking trip into the fiord's. When I saw the pictures I almost couldn't believe it, after being there for 3 days I can honestly tell you the pictures don't do it any justice. Just imagine paddling five feet from shear granite mountains plummeting 3000+ feet into the sea. It was by far the best three days I've spent in NZ, and if you've been following the blog you'll know we've done some amazing things to this point. Onto the specifics... I left Queenstown for my ... read more

Well we have liftoff!!!!! We picked up the spaceship-super campervan! after an 8hour journey to Christchurch. We had our own private 'Stray' tourbus with one of our previous drivers-was lots of fun! After we got the spaceship we drove to my friend Age's house-all those of you of TGI fame-remember this man! "Ladies Gents and those who ain't sure!!!" Stayed for a bit of catching up-gonna pop back when we drop off the spaceship, then the road trip began! The first night-after getting lost just about everywhere, we stopped for the night in a field in Timaru. Thought 'what a nice secluded spot for us to illegally camp for the night!' We awoke to find ourselves in a practically residential spot!!!!! Next day we headed off to Dunedin down the East coast-beautiful drive! (Shame about the ... read more
