Woke up this morning in torrential rain, which unrelented for the whole day, not a great start...Had planned to go up 90 mile beach to Cape Reinga, but in the rain, all beaches look the same...So instead we walked through a rainforest of kauri trees - the second biggest in the wold after sequoias - and the only two things missing in this dark rain-drenched jungle were pythons and crocodiles, not that we're complaining...The kauri are mighty elegant trees that climb straight up and have huge trunks, very impressive, see the photos. The big plus of it pissing it down is that noone was bothering us!;-) We then moved to Ngawha hot springs upon the recommendation of a local info office and what a find! Ah the joy of sitting in hot mud when the rain's ... read more

Been a while since we've been in touch so we thought we'd take 5 out of our busy schedule, you know, on a beach, eating well etc. lol Well, from Taupo and the thermals we went down to Tongariro - an amazing place where NZ only desert exists (well, desert by NZ standards), plus three dormanant volcanoes. Unfortunatly weather was poor whilst we were there and put off most of walks and meant we didnt really see the volcano's. However, we did get to slush around in the snow - a good 3-4 inches worth. Like being a big kid again for matt, philpa wasnt so keen to play!!! From here we went back to the west coast, firstly stopping at Whanganui where we did the culture thing - art galleries etc. We had real luxury ... read more

Hello again!!! I haven't been able to write in a while because the internet at the hostels has been expensive and busy. Right now I am in the city of Taupo which is situated on the largest lake in New Zealand, lake Taupo, funny how that works. Anyway, things are going really well. Last Friday I jumped on a Kiwi Experience bus. My pass is from Auckland to Christchurch, but the bus is a neat way to get around the country because it does not go on a direct route, it zig-zags all over the place. On Friday we went to Cathederal Cove on the east coast of the country where we were treated to beautiful views of the ocean. We spent the night in a small town called Whitianga (pronounced Fitianga) and stayed at this ... read more

Ahh, holidays! here we are in New Zealand for 7 weeks of intense relaxing and discovery...We started with Auckland where we landed on Wednesday 13th October. We stayed in a campsite by the beach for the first 2 days (Takapuna), in NorthShore, with Rangitoto island volcano greeting us every morning across the waters of the Hauraki gulf. The sunshine also made an appearance for our walks along the beach, nice part of Auckland! We then caught up with my friends Neville and Loretta who live in Northcote and they showed us around - Mount Eden and One Tree Hill in Auckland. We also headed to Murawai on the West Coast, dark volcanic sands, strong surf and green hills. We have now reached Paihia in the Bay of Islands in Northland (North of Auckland) from where we'll ... read more

Well it's only 1 day to go!!! It's been the most freaky 2 weeks you could ever imagine. Our trip was looming ever closer, and then to add extra pressure, we decided to add in 'House Buying' to the mix! Yep, we bought our apartment so at least when we come home, we'll be coming home to our very own home. Huge thanks to Brett (Adam's Dad) for helping us make this possible. Dinner last night at Jule's folks, Rene's amazing Roast Chicken, I know I'm going to miss that for the next month! Rene and Evan were kind enough to give us a special present which will help us out along the way while we are there, thank you so much! Grant and Greer came over last night, they will be looking after our apartment ... read more

Auckland, the city of sails. I arrived here at about 7am this morning. I have to say it's been a pretty tiring trip. I've got dark circles under my eyes. I arrived to a cloudy morning about 15c. I had a nice cab driver who took me into Auckland and we had a good conversation on the way. He told me to go down to the Bay of Plenty to look for some work. It was weird driving by all the school kids, because they all wear uniforms down here. I was dropped at my hostel, and the staff are sooo nice. They answer any questions you have and are very friendly which is nice and welcoming. There are 7 floors because the building is quite narrow. I'm on an all girls floor and in a ... read more

Yes, we arrived yesterday in NZ! We set off Monday and 12 hours later arrived Wednesday, we lost a day (18th) go figure! Yesterday we got to our hosetl at about 8.30am, we arrived at 4am. Can't believe how easy it is here, even just at the airport! They have hundreds of leaflets and people to help you!! To get to the centre we have to walk through the red light district!! But it's fine. Had a couple of hours sleep then went for a walk around the city. It's a nice city. First impresions are good! Had a look at the harbour and the shops. We went to the backpackers car market as we are thinking of buying a camper van to travel in. We were a little disappointed as they consisted of a normal ... read more

Wow, I can’t believe we have been gone for one month. We are really getting used to the NZ lifestyle and it will be hard to leave. There is that English influence here that makes everything seem so civilized, but the Kiwis are so casual. It makes for a wonderful life! We get up and get going so we can catch the bus to the Wellington Zoo. We want to spend some time there before Michael’s appointment at 10:45 am. We walk across the street to the train station, which also serves as a central bus station. We are taken through parts of Wellington that we have not seen yet. Courtenay Place is the trendy, restaurant area and we have not been there yet. The zoo is in Newtown, an older area with Victorian row houses ... read more

Sitting in this gorgeous enclosed bay with noone else in sight and just the sound of the waves rippling on the pebbles and the feel of the sunburn on my neck. Bugger me it's hot. Some cheery soul was telling me yesterday that New Zealand is directly below a massive hole in the O-Zone layer meaning it has the largest number of cases of melanona skin cancer in the world. Joy. Met a girl last night in the lodge from Hemel, who also went to Birmingham Uni - weird coincidence! Had a quite night in, in front of The Green Mile while Mark mixed up some tunes for the local pot heads out on the decking. No snorers - hurrah! ... read more

Since the trip to Bay of Islands, I’ve been concentrating on my research. Well, maybe not concentrating so much as occasionally working while spending more time playing. I have, however, visited my first marae and done my first interview, as well as become a regular in the Maori section of the University’s general library. I’m still trying to get some sense of how exactly to do ethnographic research, but it’s coming along. Today, after an interview at a house in the Mt. Eden suburb, I did some exploring. Mt. Eden is an old volcanic cone and the summit is the highest point on the Auckland isthmus. So, still dressed in my nice interview clothes, I hiked up to the top and took out the camera. In the company of 20-30 cows (they’re everywhere!), I enjoyed the ... read more
