Yesterday I got kicked out of the City YHA and moved down the road to the International YHA. I'm not sure whether this is a move up or down, since it doesn't have a quaint little bistro, but I'm content all the same. The only dorm they had was an 8-bed and when I got in, it was empty except for one guy who was sleeping but woke to address me in the most ridiculous English toff accent I've ever heard! Turns out he's the Right Hon Alexander Du Cevellier or CeBilliers or something. Ooooo - smell her! I had a quick chat and left him to sleep. Later on, I'm cooking when I hear someone shout 'Manchester!, Hello, I say, Manchester?!' and it's him again! I nodded my head and say a grumpy 'Hello' - ... read more

We get up early so we can rent skis and get to the mountain early for the best conditions. Lifts here open at 8:00 am and close at 3:30 pm. The shop where we rent our skis is owned by the same family as the café last night. It is overcast but the forecast calls for clearing weather. We get to the base and eat some breakfast in hopes that the sun will come out and burn off the clouds. One side of the mountain is closed due to poor visibility and it really looks like it should all be closed but their season is until the end of October, so we think they just open it because they wouldn’t know what to do with the people that have driven four hours from Auckland or Wellington. ... read more

We get up and buy individual boxes of cereal and some milk at the front desk for breakfast. We go into the shared kitchen and eat our breakfast with an older couple that is here for a few days and hoping for the weather to clear so they can do a scenic flight over the mountains. We catch the shuttle to Whakapapa and notice that several skiers and snowboarders are getting on the shuttle. As we approach the visitor center we decide to ride the shuttle up to the ski base area to see what it is like. Since it is an hour until the shuttle goes back down the mountain we have to spend an hour at the ski base area. Of course we are terribly tempted to rent skis and take a few runs ... read more

We've spent the last three days in the central plateau area of the north island. We took the decision to do the Tongariro Northern Circuit rather than the shorter Tongariro crossing while waiting for the water level on the Wanganui river to drop (which it has). This is classified as one of the ten great walks in New Zealand. Unfortunately we didn't get to see all the magnificent views it boasts as the rain set in on the second day and the cloud level was down. We were a little surprised when we arrived at the hostel on Tuesday night to be told that the route had been closed for the previous four days and that we would need crampons for the higher sections. We decided to head around the route in reverse and hopefully the ... read more

What a difference a day makes. A cold front is moving in and we wake up to rain once again. Hopefully it will clear off tomorrow as we are going to Tongariro National Park this afternoon to try to get in more hiking before we go to Wellington and cross over to the South Island. We walk into town, go to the Redoubt (old fort) area and to the Taupo Museum. We stop for lunch at a seaside café and have a really good, kind of chicken burrito. We grab a few bottles of wine at a specialty wine store to stick in our bags just in case they don’t sell wine in the national park, then go to the transport center. We travel by regular bus to Turangi, then transfer to a small shuttle van ... read more

As you saw from the photos in the last blog, I did it! You can't believe the fear that goes through you when you step out onto a thin ledge, 192m above a rather harsh-looking concrete below you! With both white-knuckled hands gripping, one after the other along the railing, I slowly stepped out and the guy, (who rather worryingly was in training), harnessed me up on top of the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. Ok, previously I might have withheld the small fact that the jump would be a 'base jump by wire' meaning that you were caught and lowered by a wire on the way down, so it's not quite a bungy, but it's a good warm up - you've gotta take these things one step at a time you know! Anyway, Kim ... read more

Hiya folks. Things down in New Zealand are going well. Sometimes I find myself a bit bored since I have no one to talk to, but I am finding ways to amuse myself. Yesterday I had my orientation with IEP/BUNAC and learned all about New Zealand and how to find a job, etc. Today I went on a free tour of Auckland with Kiwi Experience and it was really good. We were taken to some places where a lot of tours don't visit and I saw some spectacular views. Tomorrow I am leaving Auckland on a Kiwi Experience tour where I am hoping to see some interesting places. On this tour I am going to decide where I want to live and find a job, I am thinking somewhere on the South Island. I don't know ... read more

Hello everybody We are now in the beautiful city of wellington. Since we last spoke, we have travelled from mt manguani (some spelling like that) through to Rotorua, Lake Taupo ( very nice), Napier (wine making place with lots of art deco - wonderful botanic garden) then across of Otaki (couple of hours from wellington) and then onto Wellington - where we are now. Napier was lovely, it was sunny and the scenery much like that of tuscany with all the vineyards. Otaki is a place you wouldn't think to stop in but it had this fantastic gorge which we went for a walk to, a massive car museum (where chris acted like a child in a sweet shop - he literally didn't know which direction to walk in first), and a beach were i ... read more

IF YOU SUBSCRIBE TO OUR BLOG, I’M SORRY THAT IT SENDS YOU AN E-MAIL EVERY TIME I ADD A DAY AND SINCE I CAN ONLY UPDATE EVERY FEW DAYS, YOU GET SEVERAL E-MAILS AT ONE TIME. I DON’T KNOW HOW TO STOP THAT. We get up to start on a day hike by the Waikato River that goes up to Haku Falls. As we walk by Lake Taupo we notice several black swans on the lake, so we stop to take pictures. We stop and buy a sandwich to take with us for lunch later and walk about 2 meters to the trailhead. We hike about one hour up to the falls and it is very impressive. Along the way we see the national kayak course and it looks pretty difficult. As with everything in NZ, ... read more
