Hello Everyone! Well I have now officially had my first publicity photo taken!! Yesterday night I attended the NZ premiere of the film "In her shoes" with Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette. It was a fundraising event for WIFT ( Women In Film and Television) Pam White coordinated the entire event and invited me to come. I took my friend John and I had a great time. We saw the film which was pretty good and then after there was a prize giveaway, some promotional giftbags, wine and nibbles and a woman walking around taking pictures for WIFT promotion. She stopped by John and I and took our picture then asked for our names and wrote them down. It was very exciting. I got to meet Pam and she is extremely nice, we have arranged to ... read more

Back in Auckland now! I made the 3 day journey from Sydney to Perth two weekends ago on the Indian Pacific train. It was quite remarkable to see the various landscapes across the southern portion of Australia. We stopped in Broken Hill (ghost town - previously busy mining town), Adelaide (charming city - great parks and botanical gardens - I went for a run and skirted around a number of lovely outdoor weddings, one of which had the bride and groom leaving on motorcycles!), and Kalgoorlie (once famous for the Australian gold rush). We passed through the Nullarbor Plain, which was quaint, but perhaps similar to driving through Kansas over and over again. Upon my arrival in Perth, I stayed at Cottesloe Beach for two nights and had a great view of the Indian Ocean! Unfortunately, ... read more

Greetings from New Zealand. I have just arrived on the South Island after an over night ferry crossing. I flew into Auckland late Wednesday night; the flight from Melbourne was only about 2 1/2 hours (though it felt a lot longer). On the first day I meet up with Peter, an old FOX8 employee who is currently working at Sky News, and we toured around Auckland. To tell the truth I was a bit disappointed in Auckland, it was a pretty boring city and not very attractive either. But one does not go to New Zealand for its cities. The next day Lake Taupo was the destination. Situated between Auckland and Wellington (on the bottom of the North Island), the Lake was once an active volcano that erupted some 25,000 years ago producing a gigantic ... read more

Kia Ora Katou!- (Hey everyone!) Long time no blog! My apologies! These past two weeks have been just overwhelming with all my schoolwork coming to a big pile. AGH! But I managed to survive and turn it all in. SO now I have a week until my Finals and then traveling the North Island, then FIJI! It has all flown by SO quickly, can you believe I am done with my classes at Vic, already? My time at school here has been a great learning experience. For the most part I loved all my classes, (Music in NZ, Maori Society and Culture, Peopling of Polynesia and Literature, Film, Theatre of Aotearoa NZ) My favorite being the latter. In Maori class I learned how to do cultural dances, sing a waiata, do a karanga and help cook ... read more

The weather today is cold and lightly raining, so we slept in for the first time on this trip. We wanted to go to the Rotorua tourism office and museum so we dressed in our rain jackets and headed out. Everything we need here is only a few blocks away. Michael has done really well on selecting motels that are within walking distance of all our needs. We are both enjoying the no car lifestyle and with all the walking we don’t have to make time to work out. We went to the tourism office, which also serves as their DOC information office and Michael asked about Tongariro Crossing walk in Taupo. We have been concerned about it since the weather is so cool. The lady at the DOC said that there was snow at higher ... read more

Erratic spring showers in Auckland left me at a bit of a loss at what to do on Monday. It turned out to be one of those aimless wandering days, dodging the downpours and generally observing hostel life. In the evening I was accosted by a shy Japanese girl called Tomoni. She had only just arrived in the country and felt quite threatened by not being able to communicate and actually envious of fluent english speakers around her. Her weapon of attack was a simple electronic word convertor. It proved to be invaluable. I succeeded in explaining to her to not be afraid to ask for help in all aspects of daily life. She proved her confidence by asking another girl in our dormitory where to buy water! Although late, she was hungry and I accompanied ... read more

On arriving at Waitomo we checked in to the Juno hall backpackers hostel and then, after a quick bite to eat, headed out in the dark with our torches for a short walk in the nearby Ruakuri valley to see a glow worm area. Amazing little creatures that use a chemical reaction to produce light (to lure their prey). Somehow we managed to dodge the showers (Andy still doesn't believe that we miss the showers because of my Irish luck) and returned to the hostel for a dose of Fawlty Towers(not our choice of video but as funny as always). The following morning we were booked in for the Black Abyss tour of the Ruakuri caves. We'd heard that water levels were nearing the safety cut off level the day before and after heavy overnight rain ... read more

Today there was a huge birthday party for Evan and Kate. It was in 209, and theme was Mexico. I didn't have anything to wear, so Jason just told me to speak in Spanish for awhile, which was fun. I still remember a fair amount of Spanish. There were heaps of people in 209. It got pretty roudy. I was the 'funnel man' I packed dozens of funnels for everybody, it was alot of fun. I took one myself, even tho I didn't plan on drinking. I even had Evan funnel his margarita, twice. It was a really fun night.... read more

We leave Auckland early and stop at the Waitomo Caves along the way. The rain makes it impossible for us to go completely through the caves, but we can take a boat in far enough to see the glowworms in the grotto, then back out again. The glowworms are an impressive sight. The bus driver drops us right at the door to our motel, I call Vince & Dee and they say they will get back to us on when we can get together. We walk a few blocks into town for dinner and ate at a cute pub called the Pheasant Plucker. When we return we have a message from Vince & Dee. Dee tells me that they are going to arrange for us to go to the Tamaki Heritage Center and dinner on Sunday. ... read more

I was struggling to make a decision regarding my next destination, so I finally decided to head up to the Bay of Islands for a few days. I stayed in a place called Paihia, which I am sure is a glorious beachside experience when it isn't raining relentlessly. Which is what it did for the majority of my time there. Still, I enjoyed the trip. I saw Cape Regiana, the most northerly point of NZ. You could see an impressive amount of ocean, let me tell you. I saw some Kauri trees - cousins of those huge trees they have around San Fransico - they were the largest trees I have ever seen. On the same trip I tried sandboardng. This involves shooting down massive sanddunes on a small board. Quite exciting, but results in sand ... read more
