We like Auckland much better than the brief first visit we had a few years ago. It is a very vibrant city on a beautiful harbor. We have spent several days exploring the city and getting information. We took a ferry across the harbor for our first over night hike. We hiked to the summit of Rangitoto Island, which was formed by a volcano 600 years ago. Then across a causeway to Motutapu Island were we camped out overlooking Home Bay. There were only two other tents within site on the island. Hike to the summit was strenuous but rewarding with views back across the harbor to Auckland. We took the Coastal Track on the way back to the ferry. It is a misleading name. It was mostly a rough hike through lava fields and only ... read more

O.k. I've made it up to Paihia eventually ... there was an incredible hitch in the plan when I went to catch the coach at the bottom of the Sky Tower in Auckland and discovered that my ticket was booked for Friday 14th October and not Wednesday 28th September as I had intended!!! What the incredibly useless guy who booked my ticket at the YHA travel office! I've learnt lots of lessons there, but v. proud of myself for insisting on compensation ... They had to sort out my journey for the following day and also put me up in a 4-bed room of my own!! I had the best night sleep so far. From now on I think I'm going to take more control over bookings!!! So now that I'm in Paihia, it's not quite ... read more

Well here is installment two of our much raved about travel dairy. We have been in New Zealand for two weeks now and the weather has improved slightly. We have hardly had any rain since our first day here, so we can't really complain. We have been pretty much non-stop since we got here (we'll need a holiday when we get back). We stayed in Auckland for only two nights, as we did not feel there was a great deal that could be done there that couldn't be done in any other major city. We drove to the top of One Tree Hill, a dorment volcano, that has more than one tree on it and went to the Kelly Tarlston Underwater World. Kelly Tarlston's was brilliant, there were giant Stingray and sharks just swimming over your ... read more

Hello from the south of the north island - capital of this fine land - Wellington. After saying no more shopping I did a little bit more in a place called Otaki. It had a discount surf shop and i couldnt resist got couple of tops for my bros. So it was all good as it wasnt for me. Left Muckland (Auckland) on Sat, thankfully. Its a huge city but a dump, theres one main street and not a lot else. Got the coach to Rotorua, stopped off at a place called Waitomo were I did a glow worm tour and saw lots of little glow worms in caves. In the evening went to a Maori village (fake). Its an evening were tourists like myself can go and see what happens in a Maori village and ... read more

We leave all our bags at the Hyatt but our backpacks. We walk several (downhill) blocks to the ferry pier. We take the ferry to Rangitoto, mostly with people that will make this a day trip. The climb up the crater is harder than we expected. We are not used to carrying 40-pound packs on our backs. Although we are slower than usual, the packs are really pretty comfortable to wear. We head off to Motutapu and soon realize that we are at the point of no return. The last ferry has gone back. We are not hiking as fast as usual with the packs on our backs, but will get there and have camp set up before dark. The bay is beautiful and there are only two other campers there. One came in by kayak. ... read more

Yaaa -how's it?, I be in New Zealand now and travelling around the two main islands (North and South) for another 20 days or so..... So just finishing my second month in Australia (well just the East coast of Australia) and I have been travelling via an organised "backpacker" tour bus called the Oz Experience. They organise little mini trips and activities between driving you from one place to another. On my first three days, there were four of us on the Oz Exp. mini bus and a surf school for this period. Fresh from surfing in South Africa, it was interesting to see how the lessons compared in Australia.... The surf was more challenging at the beaches we learnt at here than S.Africa but I seemed to stand up just as often (not very!) hehe- ... read more

Spent most of the day planning what we would do the next few weeks. Now we have extra food to deal with as well! We are working on getting ourselves together to live out of one bag and backpack each for the next four months. It is a definite learning experience. We decide to go to Rangitoto Island, just a ferry ride away in the bay. There is a day hike up to the crater and a hike to the neighboring island of Motutapu with a camp ground at Home Bay. It will be a one night hike and we can check out all of our equipment before we get further in the bush. Scaling down is not going too well and we decide to come back to Auckland and spend a few days dealing with ... read more

Just a quick blog as we're busy packing for our trip home but I must report on our cracking weekend skiing at Turoa on Mount Ruapehu, one of New Zealand's most active volcanoes. It forms part of Tongariro National Park and is pretty much in the middle of the North island. The car behaved well on the return journey and the weather behaved even better. So well that our neglect to bring any sunscreen had quiet an impact on my face. I'm peeling already and with my new huge goggles, I have a resemblance to a brown and pink panda. It was unbelievable how quickly my skin colour changed - even with factor 30 on the Sunday, I still took colour - the sun really is so strong here especially when its reflected off snow at ... read more
