Today started off with a bang when Geri broke the hotel's french press coffee pot, showering glass shards, coffee and grounds all over the floor. Thankfully, hotel management didn't seem to care. You would have thought we'd told Linda, the manager, that she'd won the Lotto when we told her about the broken pot. Geri is drinking tea for the duration of the trip, at least when she's in charge of making her own beverages. After that trauma, we braved the rain and wind and headed off to Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Museum of New Zealand. (Te Papa translates to "Our Place.") It's a huge complex that includes natural history, cultural, scientific and art exhibits. Plus about 47 different places to get coffee. Kiwis are very into espresso all of a sudden. After Geri indulged ... read more

Woke up during the night but went back to sleep on my own. I guess it’s the nice Hyatt bed! We walked down to the pier and went to the Department of Conservation (DOC) office. The lady there was very helpful and suggested that we try to base ourselves at a camp ground and take day walks instead of always having to break down and set up camp every day. We walked around downtown, which is very hilly and realized what bad shape we are in to be heading out on hikes. I figure we should be in pretty good shape after four months of walking and hiking. Picked up a bus timetable at the bus station so we can decide how many hours we need to buy on our bus pass. Scoped out the grocery ... read more

Well, I think I’ve had about all the time I need in Auckland now (tonight will be my fifth night) and so I’ve booked a coach to travel north to a place called Paihia, which is near the Bay of Islands for three nights in a chalet by the beach. The Youth Hostel that I have been staying in in Auckland is great with excellent cooking facilities and lots of friendly travellers . I wasn’t expecting to be eating beans on toast,( I bought the beans as someone else had a loaf) and playing Boggle within my first day of being here, and what a fab introduction to New Zealand to go to a rugby game, start chatting to a local and be given 2 tickets for another game!! It feels very damp in this city ... read more

When we left, our heroes were out in search of a meal in Napier, and didn't know that so much more than sustenance was in store for them... Within walking distance of our hostel (the lovely Stables Lodge) on the waterfront was the Restaurant Indonesia. It got a good write-up in the Lonely Planet, and it looked interesting, so we walked there, to find it wasn't open for another 30 minutes. Fate did not allow us to walk away and search for another eatery. No, the universe demanded that we dine at Restaurant Indonesia, and so the universe led us to sit on a bench on the waterfront for half an hour, despite the chilly ocean breeze. At 5:59, we pressed our noses against the glass and the server let us in. We were the first ... read more

Gem here, Few days behind in updating about our trip over the weekend with Chevy who we met pruning. We had shopped on Friday to get all the supplies needed for the weekend and told to be ready for 6am, thanks for that one Chevy. A sleepless night followed filled with BAD irish folk songs curteousy of the idiotic bloke duty manager of Napier YHA. His opinion was that everyone else in the building wanted to hear the awful sounds of a cat being strangled and churned out to try and sound like folk songs, when no one was actually sitting in the Kitchen where it was playing to listen to it, think they had all been scared off by it. But our room was right above so anyone for irish rover for the 3rd time ... read more

We got up and had breakfast, then got ready to fly to Auckland. Michael wanted to find an internet café so we went to the airport around noon. Michael used the internet to make fantasy football changes (we are 17 hours ahead of the US) and I sat around reading. We are bored with Fiji and anxious to get to NZ. Flight to Auckland was uneventful and dinner on airplane was good. We got to Auckland, took a taxi to the Hyatt and went to bed right away. ... read more

Hello from Napier, NZ. We are currently visiting the east coast of the North Island for a day. Napier is considered the Art Deco capital of the world (rivalling Miami). The town was destroyed by an earthquake and completely rebuilt in the early 1930s, the heyday of art deco architecture. Yesterday we visited Rotorua, kind of the Disney Land of New Zealand. The tourist draw is the geothermal/volcanic activity, that creates lots of geysers, sulphur vents and pools of hot boiling mud (downside: entire town smells like rotten eggs). Woo! We visited a spa and had mud baths, a sulphur bath and an hour long massage. The massage was worth the trip by itself! Earlier in the day, while staying in the coastal town of Whakatane ("wh" is pronounced like "f", so it sounds like faka-tah-nay, ... read more

We are now staying at a campsite at the bottom of mount maunganui, looks all very impressive - waking up with a big hill on one side and the ocean on the other. Weather picking up, summer is on it's way!!! This is good news after the spring like weather we had up at the top of north island (cape reinga). Walking down to the light house there were 75 mph winds blowing. All a bit heart in the mouth, (one of the tour group got blown off his feet, very close to edge). But now the sun is out. We have been in the coromandel for a week, and it is very beautiful. We went sea kayaking, which was lots of fun if very hard work. both very tired the next day. We are currently ... read more

Hello Everyone!! I am following in my friend Aaron Fox's footsteps and making an online journal which I think will be easier for me to keep everyone updated. It is very hard to imagine but I have now been in Wellington for 10 days. So much has happened it feels like I have been here longer. I have seen alot of my old friends that I made while I stayed here last year and everyone has been wonderful and helpful as I get started in my new life. I have offically been moved into my new flat for 2 days now, I have a large room in a house which I share with 4 other people who are around my age. All of them are in school and most of them go to Victoria University which ... read more
