Well Greame headed back to Auckland to meet his girlfriend as she is coming over for 3 weeks. Suzy and i went on a tour to try and swim with dolphins. We managed to see common and bottlenose dolphins. Unfortunatly we couldnt swim with the bottlenose as they at young ones with them. When we go to the pod there was another tour swimming with then so we got quite excited but basically there have been loads of complaints about that tour group and they shouldnt have been in there. WE totally understood why we couldnt go in but it was disappointing. So then we headed further north and got to cape reinga. The furthest northern point. It is where the tasman and pacific meet and we think we could see the differnce between the two ... read more

ok, this blogging marlarky take way to much time, and the internet stations are utterly crap. Today we drove up to the 90 mile beach - yup 90 miles of continuous beach! it was incredibly windy so plenty of surf for as far as you could see. We headed up to Cape Reigna, the 2nd most northly tip of NZ. This was in storm force gales (Auckland was battered by 150km/h winds at the time) and we were pinned against a notice board by wind and hailstones at one point! a man rescued an old lady from being blown away. We batteled it out and survived. Good fun!... read more

Again the weather looked to be in our favour as we headed for the cape. By now we were on the smallest peninsula of New Zealand headed for the very top. It was on this morning that Garreth got a call from his mum in Ireland asking if the Tsunami had hit yet. Until that point we had heard nothing of it. It turns out that an Earth quake north of New Zealand could have possible triggered a Tsunami. Well we weren’t going to let a bit of water get in our way. It had taken us three days to get up here. We continued on our way and went to 90 mile beach. Well if it was going to happen we wanted to get a good view. Despite the lack of a wall of water ... read more

So last major stop in NZ (apart from Auckland) was 90 Mile Beach and Cape Reinga - the tip of the North Island. You can actually drive down the beach (that isn't actually as long as its name suggests!), but we couldn't do this in a campervan because no cars are insured for driving on beaches...keep reading and you'll find out why! We took a day tour in a bus that was cool but not overly exciting. We stopped at the Ancient Kauri Kingdom to look at carvings and furniture made from wood that was about 45,000 years old. They even had a staircase made out of a giant tree trunk! Soon after we stopped at the best shop in the world. Look at that ice cream for a dollar!! That's 40p!! Then we stopped at ... read more

The next destination was 90 mile beach and Cape Reinga. 90 mile beach was pretty sweet, the sand is so compacted you could actually drive your car on the beach. We did take Heather out…she didn’t enjoy it too much but we got her out just fine, unlike some cars that where buried. It was neat to be able to look down the beach and all you could see was shore line, 90 miles of beach…heaven. We then headed even more north to ‘the Cape’. Now ‘the Cape’ is the MOST north point you can get to in NZ, and it is the point where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean collide. The only way to get there is to drive this crazy windy road where the last 15-20km where dirt…oh yeah more dirt roads, ... read more

Cape Reinga. My objective, to reach the most northern tip of New Zealand. Accomplished December 18th, 2005. My present travelmate and roommated Geshe headed off Saturday morning for a weekend of fun and frolick, and stressful driving. I was very excited by my van had finally be completed to my liking and I bought all the necessary things for the trip (camp chairs, cooler, bug spray, camp table) The drive took about 4 hours to reach Cape Reinga. We stoped at a Kauri Museum and experienced the "Kauri Staircase". If you've seen the previous pictures I've posted on here of Kauri Trees, you will understand why I had to visit it, and why it was so impressive. We then headed straight up to the Cape. The last 20 kms of Highway One (why they call it ... read more

It rains during the night but has stopped by the time we get up. We take our time with breakfast and getting the camp broken down. We pack up and decide to walk around to the beach area and enjoy that for about an hour until our bus arrives to take us back. The man from Auckland stops us along the way worrying whether the bus will come down to get us since it rained last night. We don’t think there is a problem with the road, but thank him for his concern. As we are enjoying the beach views, the man from Auckland comes by to be sure we don’t need a ride to the bus. These Kiwis are the nicest people. We have a picnic and the bus arrives to take us home. Part ... read more

The bus will pick us up at 7:15 am, so we are up early. We store our two bags at the hotel and get on the bus with our backpacks. On the way to Cape Reinga we stop at the ancient Puketi Kauri wood forest. The trees are almost as big as our giant redwoods. They have been logged almost to extinction so the forests are now protected. We proceed to Cape Reinga and walk up to the point, with a picturesque lighthouse. From this point, you can look down to where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean come together. It isn’t like a straight line, more like waves going many different directions. A pretty humbling natural phenomenon. The bus driver talks us into being dropped off at Tapotupotu Bay to camp and take hikes ... read more

Tip top North Island Sand boarding is super cool Wind blown look is not. We had a super early wake up call since we had to be up and ready by 7:15 to catch our tour bus that would take us all the way up to Cape Reinga. Or in other words the tip of the North Island. Trying to be up and ready by 7:15 when there are eight other people in the room and only one bathroom was quite a challenge. Luckily there was a kitchenette in our room as well that was equipped with a sink, so that helped. There was a bit of a panic when I went to bed since I misplaced my watch. Oh no. The alarm is going to go off and wake up the entire room. DOH! Luckily ... read more
