DATE VISITED; 12,13,14 ISH OF DECEMBER 07 I forgot to mention in the Russell entry that in addition to it taking about 3 hours to get there from Auckland, it took the same amount of time for e to recover from my traffic offence! Yes thats right - 3 days in and I get pulled up by the cops already! Looking back I can smile but at the time I was livid. Hovering through an amber a bit flustered - trying to escape the city for the North cost me 70 quid! He was pleasant enough and was actually interested in my job and what we were doing here - but it didn't distract me from the blow of the fine. I'll treat ambers as 'early reds' than 'late green's' from now on! We tried to ... read more

Unfortunately, it was 08h10 when I surfaced this morning. Despite having an early night (22h30), I’d slept solidly and was awoken by the children arriving at the adjacent school. The sun was already in climbing in the clear sky and the omen for a good weather day was good. Breakfast was a hurried affair; toast, Alison Holst’s muesli (I don’t think she noticed it was missing), fresh coffee and orange juice and, once the washing up was done, it was a case of ensuring the van was unplugged from the mains, the LPG was off, all the inner doors secured and the fridge set to battery. That done, it was time to head north; all ready by 09h03 - not bad really. Missed OpportunitiesHeading towards the far north of New Zealand shouldn’t be too difficult a ... read more

Hey guys, due to my outstanding upselling skills I got this price from the hotel I work at: Auckland - Bay of Islands - Cape Reinga Fly / Drive Day Tour . 12 hours of travelling by cessna, car and walking around the northland to the most beautiful places. Cape Reinga is located at the northern end of the North Island of New Zealand. The name of the cape comes from the Māori word 'Reinga', meaning the 'Underworld'. It refers to the Māori belief that the cape is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld. In fact the Tasmanian Sea and the Pacifiv are clashing together there - you can see and hear it!!! Ninety Mile Beach is a beach located on the western coast of the far north of the North ... read more

We were up EARLY the next morning because we needed to go meet our "Sand Safari" Bus that was going to be taking us on our tour for the day. First stop after boarding the bus was at the Giant Kauri Kingdom. Kauri trees are some of the oldes in the world. They make some of the Redwood Forests look very very young. Some of the trees that they are uncovering are around 45, 000 years old. A lot of the oldest Kauri forests need to be uncovered because the are so old that they are far below the surface and need to be dug out like fossils. We went to an old gumdiggers park, where gum digging used to be a very popular industry. In the park they are in the process of uncovering ... read more

Today I bade Paihia farewell en tearfully boarded the bus back to Auckland...somehow my 4 week stint of cleaning at the Mousetrap snowballed into 5 months and 6 jobs and I loved most minutes of it! I really enjoyed working for Larry (the owner of the ice cream store that I deflected to) but after 6 weeks of dealing with incompetent customers I was ready for a break...the average day involved the repetition of the following conversation at least 50 times: me : "hi ya, what can I get for you" customer: "i'm still looking...you have too many flavours.............i'll have the hokey pokey" me : "sure, would you like a single or double scoop" customer: "hmmm.....hmmmm.......hmmmmm....a single please" me : "would you like that in a waffle or regular cone?" customer: "just the hokey pokey" me ... read more

Now back near Auckland, as a treat we booked into a motel for 3 nights in Birkenhead, (just north of Auckland) where we hooked up with Lucien and Sinaed. Lucien and John had a surf at Piha, we later had fresh fish BBQ (Blue nose Green, Salmon kebabs and scallops, hand picked from the fish market)and when Lucien was back at work on Monday we caught the ferry across from Devonport into Auckland and went up the Sky tower, where we watched several people do the sky jump from just above the observation deck. John sorted out his tickets with Air NZ, he is now staying until 5th March. We are planning to have a week in San Francisco then. After this I will head back also. After having company for that long, I think it ... read more

“Next time I’m gonna hang me undies on your heated towel rack,” Marty shouted as we waved good bye to the hosts, Tom and Monic, of the Lakeside B and B located at the bottom end of New Zealand’s 90 Mile beach. Marty was the guide we had hired to take us the close to 90 miles to Cape Reinga, accessible by beach only in a four wheel drive. I had just finished telling him as we jumped into his not new van that the bed and breakfast was really perfect. Built by Tom who is a life long resident of the area and a scallop fisherman, and operated by his lovely Swiss wife Monic, it was a great find …a taste of pure luxury for a much less than luxury price. The minute I mentioned ... read more

... read more
