Two days after spending Christmas with my family in Brisbane, Linda and I hopped on board a flight from Coolangatta to Auckland for our long-awaited holiday to New Zealand. Not only would this be Linda's first time ever in New Zealand, but it would be my first visit to the country in 33 years - having previously visited with my family whilst still in pre-school. Given the outstanding success of our previous road-trip holidays on both the West and East Coasts of Australia, it was no surprise that we had decided to hire a campervan for our exploration of New Zealand – which we had booked no less than sixteen months in advance, in order to take advantage of a ridiculously cheap deal from Wicked Campers (ie 75 days with full accident cover for less than ... read more

Heading north from the Bay of Islands I made it to Cape Reinga which is the northern most point in New Zealand and the meeting point of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. The point is also one of the most important sites in Maori culture. The Maori believe that souls bound for the afterlife travel north through the islands and depart this world for the next at the tip of the Cape. The drive up here was another spectacular one with winding curves flanked by million dollar ocean views and lush green rolling hillsides. The weather here in the Northlands has been perfect. Blue skies and sunshine all around. People have told me to expect showers, but luckily I haven't come across any. As the days go on in my little car I am becoming ... read more

R: So first, a little explanation. We were going to go to Fiji/Samoa/Tonga. We have not. This is for 3 main reasons. 1) Most importantly, we love New Zealand and we feel like 5 weeks was rushing it and we're happy to stay on. 2) It is NZ school holidays this week which makes all the islands more expensive and out of our price range with the exception of Fiji. 3) Cyclone Winston ripped through Fiji recently damaging infrastructure and we were told we could go to resorts, but most likely nothing else will be open yet. So we happily decided to stay on here. So we flew back to Auckland from Dunedin on a cheeky Air New Zealand flight and landed in an Airbnb in a 8th floor city central apartment, with a new host, ... read more

Friday January 1 - Today we continued our journey north, stopping in Cooper's Beach in Doubtless Bay along the way. The weather was not very good - a lot of wind and rain. The van kept blowing to the side and Jeroen had to make constant corrections. We stopped at a store that sold wooden objects made from Kauri trees that died and were buried in the swamp 45,000 years ago. Pretty amazing. The Kauri (cow-ry) tree is the largest and most famous tree from New Zealand. They are enormous but there are so few of them left now. Inside the shop they had a staircase that was built through an old kauri tree that is priced at $2.5 million! From there we continued up to Cape Reinga, the northernmost point of New Zealand, where the ... read more

When I visit a new country I always take note of any unusual things I see as I cycle from one destination to another. New Zealand although quite similar to the UK in many ways always seems a little quirky to me. From the number of microwave ovens being used as letter boxes to the number of individuals I witnessed walking bare feet around the shops, it is an immensely beautiful country with landscapes to die for, where one person on a beach is considered crowded and the people genuinely open up their homes to any stranger on a bicycle. This was my third visit to New Zealand and on this occasion I've really had the chance to explore the North Island. My previous visits were in 1995 to Wellington and Auckland with the Royal Navy ... read more

Oh my goodness, New Zealand is the most beautiful country. Amazing views at every turn. Somehow it just keeps getting better and better. Long twisty road trip today from Paihia to Cape Reinga, the northern most tip of New Zealand and a very spiritual and important area for the Maori people. We felt very moved and privileged to be there and both had quiet little chats with those sadly no longer with us. ... read more

As mentioned in my previous entry the northern most parts of Nz play an important role in Maori Mythology. They believe that this is the place where a person’s spirit comes after death and departs to their enternal home of Hawaiki. The spirit must first travel up 90mile beach and across the rugged line of Cape Maria Van Diemen to Te Reinga - the rocky point on which the lightuse is situated. Clinging to this rock is an ancient Kahika tree name Te Aroha and unlike any other tree of its kind, it has never been seen to flower. This area is known as Te Rerenga Wairua - Leaping Place of Spirits - as mythology states that the spirit must climb down steps formed by the roots of Te Aroha into the ocean. They would swim ... read more

Saturday January 11th, 2014. Northland Road Trip, North Island, New Zealand After an al-fresco breakfast we threw our stuff in the car and headed to the 'Far North' (bit of a joke as that is really the north pole!). It is actually only moderately remote and the coastline was supposed to be amazing. Our first stop was Whangaroa, described in the AA book as "one of the most scenic harbours in the southern hemisphere". Whangaroa Harbour (the centre of the County) is 40 minutes drive north of the Bay of Islands and 30 minutes drive south of Doubtless Bay, making the area’s attractions an ideal stopover for travellers searching for something different that speaks of authentic Northland – unspoiled and unique. The harbour is almost land-locked and is popular both as a fishing spot in its ... read more
