General info: Currency: New Zealand dollar Cost of living: 1500ml bottle of water 2,5$, bottle of wine 15$, meal in regular restaurant 15-20$ First impression in New Zealand was great weather, exotic lush vegetation but as well very hilly region. Wherever you look- slopes and valleys. Street are sometimes so steep that a thought of stumble is terrifying. A walk there is a good dose of workout. Going to the point, the purpose of my visit was a trip to known from The Lord Of the Rings and Hobbit series, beautiful and green village- Hobbiton. Early morning me and three companions hit the road from Aucklad to Matamata. It took about 2,5 hours, but was definitely worth it. I think no comment is needed about the village to anyone ... read more

Time to leave Auckland and head South to see what awaits. We packed up Pip (we named our Kiwi car), bade a found farewell to the hot tub and then we were off! Our first stop was the city of Hamilton. There we explored the Hamilton Gardens. Not only was this attraction free, it was very beautiful! A myriad of different types of gardens in spring time can't be beat. My favorites were the Italian Renaissance, the Traditional English and the Indian Retreat. Jeff enjoyed the Italian Renaissance along with the extensive kitchen garden. After getting our eyes filled with outdoor beauty, off to find substinance! We found the Good George Brewery. And what a find! Jeff got an amber ale while I ordered the sparkling ale. Uh....yum! A plate of pork and beef sliders later, ... read more

Hi All, We woke up at Sasha’s in her amazingly comfy warm bed (well anything is warmer than our campervan bed). Sasha cooked us a tasty breakfast of bacon, spinach and poached egg on toast. (Wow it was so good). We said our goodbyes and thanked Sasha for everything; she works in a Kiwi fruit plantation so gave us some kiwis as a goodbye present. (They have been eaten and were great). As the weather was so bad the day before we couldn’t do the Mount Manganui walk so as it was beaming sunshine this morning we drove back there to do it!!! It was a pretty easy walk up; it took us around 40min and was well worth it!! The views from the top are breathtaking, if the weather was a little clearer you could ... read more

Hi everyone, well we've been to HOBBITON, I must have taken about 50,000 photos and I haven't even seen the films or read the books, but I will now !!, so I have clicky clicked all of these for Emma, Zoe and Joel who I believe are Hobby Hobbiton's !!! It was such a good tour walking around the hobbit holes and having cider in The Green Dragon Inn. So we arrived at the site late morning, near Matamata, it was also raining and we were really early so managed to get onto an earlier tour, they bus you onto the sites which are about a mile away from the entrance. The driver explained that in September 1998 Sir Peter Jackson discovered Alexandra Farm during an aerial search for suitable film sites, where farmland was transformed ... read more

Or Hobbiton. If you know nothing about New Zealand, then you at least know that the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hobbit movies have been filmed here. In the small town of Matamata, the Shire was built into hillsides and preserved so that fans can live out their secret, hairy feet fantasies. But I must confess: I committed a horrible crime. In my travels I passed straight through the town of Matamata without strolling through the Shire, without entering a hobbit hole, and without stopping for a beef and ale pie at the Green Dragon Inn. Basically by opening this blog, you have just fallen for a little entertaining jape on my end. But, don't judge this LOTR fan too harshly. One of you will inevitably come visit me and force me to take you ... read more

Oorspronkelijk was ... read more

We'd told jan and den nothing more than that we were leaving at 10am and all they needed were comfortable walking shoes. Today we were going to Hobbiton! This is the set of The Shire and home of Bag End where Lord of the rings and The Hobbit were filmed. Jan had planned on cooking a Cottage Pie today, and not to let a day out get in the way, she was up frying the mince before 8am. The drive was a couple of hours although when we got to Matamata, Middle Earth wasn't very well signposted at all. We'd asked for directions and been told two different ways, Gareth was threaders and ready to turn back and go home, everyone jumped on the food box for the BBQ leftovers when we next stopped to ask ... read more
