Well, here I am in Hastings with Holly and Ella for the school holidays. After arriving home into the cold, I, of course got sick and spent 4 days feeling sorry for myself and sleeping in bed. These long haul trips are getting harder to take every year. Once I came right, up to Amy and Jeremy's for a few days with the kids and then return to WN with them for the rest of the holidays. I of course couldn't wait to get out for a bit of trout fishing but the rains of last week have left the rivers dirty and high. So I have been patient but hope to get out today, Monday. The weather up here has been normal Hawkes Bay weather, sunny but with some wind. Yesterday we drove over to ... read more

The day started like yesterday, off to a winery to taste some more local wines and then onto another and finally we made it to a brewery which was the best. We ordered our lunch and sampled three different brews each - it was raining outside but we didn’t care. A young woman visiting the brewery was also celebrating her birthday so we took a picture of them together just for the fun of it and then we all sang Happy Birthday. Our guide presented Jerry with a 4 pack of the Reserve beer as a present which I thought was so sweet. We enjoyed our tour through the town of Napier which is very Art Deco and fun to look at although they do have a sad story which was an earthquake that devastated their ... read more

Spent some time in this lovely Art Deco town pretty much rebuilt in the 1930s following a devastating earthquake. The art deco architecture and style is evident throughout this place. ... read more

The sky was overcast when we set out this morning on our sight seeing tour of Hawkes Bay. First stop was Hastings which had been rebuilt in a similar fashion to Napier. The town has a clean fresh look with lots of hanging baskets and flower beds, just the sort of place us oldies would like to live. We then drove up to Te Mata in order to get a 360 degree view of the bay and adjoining countryside. However the occasional low cloud obscured some of the panorama. We then went north on part of the Pacific Coast Highway to Waipatiki beach. The final part of this journey took us over a steep pass before descending to the shore. The effort was rewarded with a lovely beach butressed at each end by high cliffs, but ... read more

Sunday 25/1/14Left Whakatane and headed for Napier.Stopped at wai-o-tapu to visit some thermal springs. It was amazing although very hot and smelly, for something so completely natural it looks anything but natural. Arrived at Napier and checked into our Art Deco hotel, very small room and a disappointing view of a roof, but the hotel was full so no chance of a move. The town looks interesting and there are self guided walking tours using a booklet so that's tomorrow sorted. Had a meal and drink in the Rose Irish bar attached to the hotel, normal pub grub but after the spices of the Indian in Whakatane it's all our stomachs would stand!... read more

Monday 26/1/15 Napier. Picked up a walk guide from the Art Deco Centre and headed out to explore the city. Interesting history of the rebuilding of Napier after the earthquake in 1930 (???) The land lifted about 2m and created dryland from the lagoon that was next to the, originally, very small city. The beach shelves a few times quite steeply and is made up of pebbles, we went across it for a look at the water, the pebbles were roasting - people pay a lot of money for hot stone treatments! No one was in the water it looked quite dangerous because of the way the beach shelved. Went for tea to Rosie's bar again and arrived half way through quiz night, we joined a young couple, Katie and Tom from UK but living in ... read more

Episode 4 (Saturday 24.01.15) Day 17 of our New Zealand trip and day 17 of sunshine ! From Rotorua we traveled South to Tongariro National Park, stopping first at Wai-O-Tapu geothermal area and Huka Falls. Of the various geothermal parks in the region, Brent and Shirl said that Wai-O-Tau was best, as it has everything – geysers, bubbling mud pools and steaming lakes of various colours. They were right. We also saw the mighty Waikato River, noisily thrusting its ice blue waters through a very narrow gorge at Huka Falls. And so on to Tongariro. This world heritage listed National Park features active volcanoes and fantastic lunar-like scenery. It is at its busiest during Winter, when everyone comes here to ski, but it is also popular in Summer, for its wonderful walking trails. The finest day ... read more

Well here in the Hawkes Bay we are doing very little so there is not a lot to tell. Di and I have been up here for nearly 2 weeks during the school holidays and it has been great fun being with the kids. The weather has been a mixed bag and we have done nothing major apart from feeling a little sorry for ourselves due to both of us having problems with our walking parts. Di returned from overseas with a very bad foot issue which has kept her from any major walking trips and I have developed a really bad knee problem that arrived just prior to coming up here. So x'rays and tests led to the taking of pills and of course this has hampered my ability to fish or bike and then ... read more

Hi again, This will be the last diary entry for this trip (That's what these blogs have been for me, instead of writing up a 'paper' diary as I did on our first big trip in 2008, I started writing the blogs on our 2011 trip and many people said they enjoyed reading them so I continued doing them on this trip. After our 2011 trip Joy found a site that published all the blogs in a hard covered book. She spent some weeks correcting spelling, grammar etc. and added a heap of new photos and the 210 page book is still read regularly by both of us just to remind us what a fantastic time we had on that 2011 8 week trip) We are back in Waipukurau, arriving home around 6pm after driving from ... read more
