Today's home schooling lesson was about weight and currency and we used a roadside orchard shop for the lesson. The kids had to weigh the big juicy red apples and work out the cost. Then we gave Hat lots of small coins and she had to find the correct amount. A very practical lesson and at 40p a kilo, the apples were peanuts.... read more

For breakfast we stop at a cafe on the highway outside of Hastings. The Hawkes Bay Espresso Coffee Co was a brilliant find. Delicious sweet and savoury brunch dishes and a very extensive coffee menu. I had my first Ristrello and it packed a punch. We continued further south to Te Paerahi beach for a spot of sandy sports, lunch and a siesta. There was no one else around on this long stretch of sandy beach and we played beach rounders, French cricket, minefield, donkey catch and finished off with some flat sprints on the sand that was hard and still slightly wet; these kids have quite a gallop!. A really simple way to spend some quality time together and we all had a brilliant laugh. Around 4pm we set off for our destination for the ... read more

At this southern end of Hawkes Bay is an unassuming hill which has the worlds longest place name. It translates into English as: "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater’, played his flute to his loved one". We continued along through the twisting country roads with dry and yellowing hills that rolled way off into the distance. The vines and orchards have given way to fields of pumpkins and huge conifer forests. Our DOC site was very small and there was no one else using it. It bordered the Ngapaeruru Scenic Reserve which was a sort of ancient temperate jungle. Hat, Ed and I went exploring and Ed was put off by the large spider webs (I got a faceful at one point which ... read more

We fancied a change from motorhome meals and drive into Napier for dinner. On the way in I kept thinking that there must be a vinegar factory in Napier as the smell in the motorhome was really quite powerful. Then it struck me, we've got a leak! Lea and Perrin's was the culprit. Fortunately, the dribble on the carpet came up quickly and the half bottle that was spilt was no where to be seen in the cupboard? So, we're resigned to the fact that the smell will take a while to disapate. A wander around Napier and the Art Deco buildings are really quite amazing, almost like a model town. We found a bistro and had a great meal and finished off with a walk along the beachfront. ... read more

Hawkes Bay is big on orchards and wineries, so it seemed rude not to visit the later. There was a great one recommended in our guide book and it was the best meal we've had so far. The seating was big wooden tables with sheepskin rug benches and a veranda made from the red leaves of many grape vines. Naturally, we bought one of their reds to sample this evening. ... read more

Post lunch we parked up in Napier and hired some bikes for an hour of leisurely cycling along the beachfront cycle path. Cas and I went for the tandem and the first few minutes were a little wobbly. I teased her about falling asleep and leaving me to do the peddling. After returning the bikes, we spent a couple of hours wandering the streets of Napier, principle to find Cas a pair of headphones and Hat another dress. We came back without either. Apparently, the clothes are very dated. There was a free DOC site further down Hawkes Bay, but when we arrived it was full of gypsy caravans, there is some kind of gathering going on, so we decided to find a paid for site in Hastings.... read more

It was a cold night as the skies were so clear and we'd left a lot of windows open; Cas woke up feeling a bit shivery. The sun soon climbed high enough to fill our valley with sunlight and then Ed and Hat disappeared into a world of imagination on the little beach beside our motorhome. Piles of sand emerged and were decorated by Hat, as did a rather large pit from which Ed extracted a boulders of various sizes including a monster one which he wanted to take with us. After some discussion about the dangers of boulders inside moving vehicles, Ed reburied his 'major find'. ... read more

Hi. We had a magic time in Gisborne and then returned to Hastings on the 4th. Amy at work so Di stayed with the kids and Jeremy and I went for a fish. Jeremy caught 2 beautiful rainbows and I one while there were a few smaller ones caught. Good day! We took a trip out to Waimarama Beach for a sunny day in the surf. Enjoy being with the kids and doing some of the young things that you have to do when with young ones. Spent a few hours at Bouncy World were the kids had a ball bouncing and climbing and sliding. Di and I drove back down to home on Saturday 9th and have spent the next couple of days trying to get the house and garden up to speed. We are ... read more
