Hello from Napier, NZ. We are currently visiting the east coast of the North Island for a day. Napier is considered the Art Deco capital of the world (rivalling Miami). The town was destroyed by an earthquake and completely rebuilt in the early 1930s, the heyday of art deco architecture. Yesterday we visited Rotorua, kind of the Disney Land of New Zealand. The tourist draw is the geothermal/volcanic activity, that creates lots of geysers, sulphur vents and pools of hot boiling mud (downside: entire town smells like rotten eggs). Woo! We visited a spa and had mud baths, a sulphur bath and an hour long massage. The massage was worth the trip by itself! Earlier in the day, while staying in the coastal town of Whakatane ("wh" is pronounced like "f", so it sounds like faka-tah-nay, ... read more

On the advice of a local resident who was visiting Westport, they recommended that we should visit Hawkes Bay and the East Cost of the North Island rather than the West - and I think it's safe to say that we're glad that we did! Spent the day visiting the National Aquarium of New Zealand which was a really lovely place, sharks, rays and even a huge turtle! We were lucky enough to get there for feeding time and see the diver hand feeding the fish in the Oceanic Tank. We then went to Marine Land which was a whole different story, really sad and depressing although they rescue and help to mend poorly sea creatures - seals, penguins etc; the whole place had an air of sadness with lovely dolphins swimming around their tank and ... read more

Napier this weekend which is the art deco centre of newzealand - went to marine land which i think i went too in ?America many moons ago when i was a nipper and Ray, Andy and Suze were still ...older. As you see got a few good pics - the highlight being the dolphins and the lowlight being the the sealions breath. i suppose my advice fact of the day would probably be never to french kiss a sealion - not that ive done it recently but the zookeeper did and im guessing he isnt a rep for listerine? Also drove out to a place called cape kidnappers for a scenic spot of lunch and then a farmers market on the way back. seeya! Dave ... read more

We went away for the long weekend (Queen's Birthday - one week later than the UK) a couple of weeks ago and it was a great weekend. We hired a car and drove up straight from work on the Friday through to Martinborough Wine Region up to Napier in Hawke's Bay on the east coast of the North Island. The weather forecast was a bit ropey and it's generally very difficult to forecast the weather accurately down here but it turned out to be pretty good. In fact, we were able to sit outside and have breakfast in our t-shirts on the Saturday. We arrived about 9:30pm on the Friday and checked into our Motel just after the All Blacks trial had finished at the nearby stadium. Just as well we didn't arrive in time to ... read more

We've spent the past week in Hawke's Bay wine country staying at 'Gannet Lodge' in Clive. The name refers to the large colony of Australasian Gannets nearby at Cape Kidnappers who are here pretty much all year round except May and June - still, this gives us an excuse to come back one day. On tuesday, we climbed up and over the top of Te Mata peak (for fantastic views of the bay and surrounding region) and then down to a giant redwood forest, before turning round and climbing back over the peak to return to the car (a circular walk would have been nicer!). On the way home we treated our weary bodies to some honey-tasting at a honey farm and some wine-tasting at a vineyard. (We freely admit that we are not nearly as ... read more

Hello again! Well this being on the road sure beats working... We've had the most glorious week weather-wise and driving around NZ has been a real pleasure. One of the nice things about NZ is that the scenery is gorgeous (and we know that it gets better on the South Island), and outside of Auckland the roads are reasonably quiet, so we are able to meander about the country looking at nice views, enjoying the weather and generally taking our time about getting places. We left the Coromandel on Thursday and had a long day's driving to Rotorua. This was just a stop-over as we were aiming for Napier but it was too far for a day's drive. The drive from the Coromandel was typically stunning, along the coast for most of the way and through ... read more

I'd wanted to come to Napier for three things - the Art Deco town itself, a Hawke's Bay Wine tour and to see the Gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers. In the end I only managed one of the three.... Mothers Day seemed to interfere with anyone wanting to run a wine tour and the Gannets have mostly all sensibly left for warmer climates over the winter!! Looks like I'll be back later in the year! Napier, a port on the east coast, is famed for its Art Deco buildings.... and there are lots of them. An earthquake in 1931 (measuring some 7.9 on the Richter Scale) flattened much of the city centre. The people of the town took this as an opportunity to rebuild in a new style and hence much was rebuilt in the Art ... read more
