Liebe Grüße Chris... read more

Having given up on trying to sell the car, we decided to have one last road trip with it! We blasted down the only real highway New Zealand has then turned east. Our plan was to drive around the peninsula and camp two days, mixing in some hiking along the way. The first city we passed was Thames. I could see why many Aucklanders would want to have a place here. In the summer this area is buzzing with activity. With the start of the southern hemispheres very few people were around. We drove into the Coromandel Forest Park and found a place to camp near Kauaeranga. Seeing no signs prohibiting it I decided to make a fire. I found plenty of dry wood and by the miracle of god actually was able to start one. ... read more

Set off North again for the true part of the peninsula and found a lovely beach with quite strong surf at Tairua on he east coast. Spent the afernoon there and waited for low tide so that we could go to hot Water Beach. This is where 2 hot springs emerge on the beach at low tide. Everyone was there, with hired spades, digging away in the sand and then lying in the water in the pools they created. Some were tepid, others just cold, but a few were really hot, too hot to stand or sit in , because the water was bubbling up just below your feet. Some of the water comes out at 60C. We spent the night at a site at Hahei and manged anothe beach walk, just as it got dark. ... read more

So we stay one night in Coromandel and go to the small but well stocked supermarket to survive for the next 5 days or so out in the wild. We then head north, continuing along the progressively windy Pacific highway. The scenery was spectacular - on the left of me was sheer drops down to the rocky sea (sometimes just inches from the road!) and to the right of me was huge rocky slopes, (more often than not the road had been cut into the hillside - road signs warned of landslides frequently) or huge rolling green hills with valleys plunging down to the bays. After an hour, we reach the last place of civilisation before we get to the very top of the peninsular - called Colville, it has 1 shop, 1 cafe and about ... read more

After finally kitting out the van to our own taste (with extra cushions for that homely touch), we head north of Rotorua and stay at a place next to the river called "Friendly Waiteti Family Trout Stream Holiday Park" which I admit sounds a bit like NZ's answer to Butlins (on a much smaller scale of course) but it was great - firstly, only 1 family as such who had a year old child which they whisked away to the other side of the park - excellent; and only about 3 other couples and that was it! Place was lovely and quiet. We picked a choice spot away from everyone else and right next to the river and just had the ducks and doves (there was a dovecote adjoining the owners house) for company. We went ... read more

Just a few pictures of another weekend away with Helen in the Coromandel. We went to the famous Cathedral Cove which is where 'The Chronicles of Narnia' was filmed and also made a trip to the legendary Hot water Beach where you can dig your own pool of hot water from underneath the sand. We also paid a visit to a few bays along the way soaking up the sea and sand :)... read more

Days 43-44 12-14 March Coromandel Peninsula Frost on the car as we left Taupo reminded us that summer is running out of time in New Zealand. One more stop before Auckland. Another p******e. Captain Cook had beaten us to it again. Is there anywhere that man has not been? His suitcase must be sticky as hell with all the bag tags from his travels. The Coromandel Peninsular, east of Auckland is spectacularly beautiful. We headed for most people’s must-go destination area: Mercury Bay. So named because Cook stopped off in the bay to observe the transit of Mercury for some reason. Round here, the NZ tourist board must love him. There’s Cook’s Beach and there’s the lookout point at Shakespeare’s Cliff with a well forged plaque to JC, complete with a description of QE2’s visit (that’s ... read more

And so back to Coromandel it was with my new found friend Hippie, a delightful man with an enourmous heart, magic ogre feet that rarely see shoes, a loud obxnoxious voice, twisted sense of humour and tendency towards uncouthness making him my perfect companion. Wilderlands is one of the oldest communes in New Zealand that's been going on since the 60s and encompasses wild bush, extensive vegetable gardens, orchards, a private beach, over a hundred hives, honey processing house, numerous self built homes, a sauna and communal hall. What was once someone's vision is now however coming to an end, or is transitioning into something else as all the long term residents had moved out or were on the verge of moving during my stay there and there was no formal organisation or structure. A Lot ... read more

Heya zusammen!
