Cathedral Cove We walked to the famous Cathedral Cove which must be one of the most photographed places in NZ. The walk itself was very pretty. We stopped at Gemstone Bay on the way, where I snorkelled, but it was quite rough and I only saw one fish! Rob watched, saying he would see what I thought before he went in - he's not as daft as he looks. Cathedral Cove was everything it promised to be - beautiful - and not too many people. Unfortunately, there were quite a few jellyfish in the sea so we had to be a bit careful. We spent a few hours there, swimming, sunbathing and picnicing, before walking back. ... read more

18th - 20th December 2008 Coromandel Town Coromandel Town is a pretty little place. It doesn't take long to walk around at all. I tried to get Rob to eat mussels from their famous smoked mussel shop, but he was having none of it! There are some lovely little colonial houses here - I took some photos - I wouldn't mind having a house in this style, they are so pretty. We spent a morning on the fun Driving Creek Railway, which takes you on an hour trip through the forest and hills. It's a miniature railway and quite a feat of engineering by the guy who built it, first as a hobby, but now it is an important environmental achievement because of all the trees they have replanted there. The chap in the booking office ... read more

12/2/09 = A cathedral with a difference + a bath you dig yourself. Alarm went off at 5:30am and reluctantly got out of bed into pitch black room. Stumbled around, toilet, grabbed scarf, cardi on, rainmac in hand and off we went 3mins later. Freezing when got outside and had to put mac on just to keep warm; Deb regretted not bringing hers. Did 30sec walk to beach then sat on bench to wait for sunrise. Bench wet, so had to rip and use plastic carrier bag found in pocket. Actually wasn't a carrier bag, was a spare dog poo bag that must have left in coat by accident. Glad I had it though, really came in handy. Deb declined use of extra dog poo bag...can't think why! Sat and waited patiently in cold then; sky ... read more

While staying in Coromandel Town, we drove across the mountains to a place called Whangapoua where we had heard about a walk to an isolated and very beautiful beach called New Chums Beach. It was about a 40 minute walk over rocks and along a bit of a dodgy path through the trees on the headland, but it was very worthwhile. The beach is lovely and there was hardly anyone there. The surf was really rough and looked like fun to mess around in, but it's amazing how strong the sea can be. We didn't go in deep, but we both got knocked right over and 'washing-machined' - not the best experience! Actually it was good fun so long as you stayed near the shore. Rob loved it. We spent the day playing in the surf ... read more

We visited Whitianga (or Fit-of anger as Rob calls it - 'wh' is pronounced 'f' here) which is a lovely little town, and played crazy golf - despite a valiant comeback from me, Rob was victorious - I hate it when he wins, he's so smug - he stuck the scorecard to the ceiling of Erica above my head where I sleep so that when I wake each morning I will see it! What a bugger!! A couple of days later we had a rematch, and he won again! I WILL beat him next time. The challenge is on...... Thames was nice little town where we stayed for a couple of nights on a lovely site overlooking a river. We met a lovely couple, Steve and Lyn, and their daughter Emily, and played cards with them ... read more

14th - 18th December 2008 Hahei Hahei is a cracking little seaside village. The beach is great and there is lots to do and visit nearby. We swam and relaxed on the beach. Rob thought he was David Beckham and put my sarong on - why does he always look better in my stuff than I do? Still, it's a worrying habit - my bikini top in Thailand, a girls' thong (brand new!) in Turkey and my sarong in NZ, not to mention a dress in the UK! Who knows what Oz will bring! We also visited Hotwater Beach which was amazing. We had never seen or felt anything like it. Part of the beach is thermal so that if you did a hole in the sand it fills with hot water. Some places are so ... read more

11/2/09 = Pick up Sylvia & off to Whitianga Another brilliant sleep last night. Woke up at 6am, but then got straight off back to sleep and didn't wake up properly until 9am...awesome! Took alot to force myself out of bed at 9am, but lot to do today because picking up car...yeh! Really excited for driving, but not excited to see what car we've been landed with...did ask for smallest and cheapest possible thing. Got ready and checked out at 10am. Asked about a hairdressers in town because both look a state still and lady on desk recommended a salon over road. Had to pay $2 each to store bags in a cupboard at hostel = ridiculous, but then off we went. Tried hairdressers recommended and was pleased to see it looked nice; not so pleased ... read more

So after our short break in England we're back out continuing our travels. Thanks to everyone for everything whilst we where back it was lovely to see and spend time with all. On January 11th it was time to bring on New Zealand (NZ) WHOORAAA except the journey to get there DOH!!! We left England a super quick trip down the trusty M1 and round the M25 to Heathrow's brand new Terminal. After coffee and goodbye's with Mum & Dad Hamer at the airport we were officially on our way. We had a good look around Terminal 5 as it was our first and last time we would be using it because British Airways no longer carry Surfboards...What a Bummer Matty will not be able to carry on his new sport. We took off from Heathrow ... read more

Well, Lindsay and I headed to Whitianga on January 24th. This was the first leg of our bus pass, kiwi experience, which seems pretty awesome so far. It took us the entire day to get there even though it was only a few hours driving time. Whitianga is located south east of Auckland and it was our only beach stop on the north island. On the way there we stopped at Hahei beach for a few hours. Hahei beach is the nicest beach I've ever seen - it has white sand and clear, warm water. After our swim break, we got back onto the bus and rolled in to Whitianga around 6:30 or 7:00 pm and got dropped off at our hostel, Cat's Pyjamas. This hostel was tons of fun, it was basically an old house ... read more
