Having to work every weekend is turning into a trend so hubby and I decided that on Thursday we would go somewhere if the weather was nice...yes BEACH DAY!!! We had just recently been to the Cormonadel where hubby read up about Opoutere Beach. and it all sounded good so we decided to head there. It is a 2 hour drive from Auckland but that was not to defeat us. We had checked the weather forecast the night before so we were a bit dumbfounded as to why it was chucking it down with rain in the Coromandel while we were driving there. It was a bit disconcerting as well because we seemed to have left the sunshine back in Auckland. Anyway upon arrival at least the rain had stopped and the sun was attempting to ... read more

It's not all in the planning I am not often impromptu when it comes to planning trips but this turned out to be one of them. I had written Coromandel on our calendar from the beginning of January when I had gotten my list of shifts but that was as far as it went except for the occasional question of 'Are we going to the Coromandel?' which never really got answered. Suddenly it's Wednesday and I start talking out loud of what we can do on the weekend as I have just done a run of 8 shifts in a row and am looking forward to the time off! Hubby mentions the Coromandel and before I know it I am booking us into a hostel for two nights in Coromandel Town. I write up a quick ... read more

Coromandel to Christchurch - 1st to 2nd Jan The first day of 2010 began with a bit of a lie in but after we had rose we were welcomed in the kitchen by scrambled eggs on bagels which Raewynne had prepared for us, which was just what the doctor ordered to prepare us for the day ahead. We had decided that we were going to make our way back to Auckland in time for our flight back to Christchurch (on the South Island) the following day, so we began to pack our bags ready once more for our onwards travels. Having packed and eaten, Raewynne offered to take us for a drive to see where her Great Grandmother lived and the school she used to teach at as well as seeing some of the Coromandel coast ... read more

The Coromandel Peninsula is a favorite get-away for stressed-out Aucklanders. A quick (ish) 2 hour drive east of Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula is a wonderful mix of mountains, forests, and pretty beaches. Tiny towns from the gold mining era line the west coast. But it is along the slightly more populated east coast where the hordes (such that they are - this isn't the Hamptons) soak up the sun on pristine white sand beaches. The small but cute town of Whitianga is a popular base for exploring the Coromandel. Just a quick drive away from Whitianga is the famous "Hot Water Beach" where you can grab a shovel and dig, dig, dig your very own hot tub in the sand. Hot Water Beach sits on top of one of the many (hundreds? thousands?) of thermal springs ... read more

Ha ha ?? ha he??? He hi??? No I got it - next stop Hahei With the van still in the garage waiting to be fixed we finally left the Hearing dogs prison on Monday 4th January 2010!!! Got on the good old naked bus to Hamilton (half way between New Plymouth and Tauranga) where we were meeting Ben and Heather who had kindly offered to take us the rest of the way back to theirs after they had spent the weekend in Raglan. We were so relieved to see them both; I can’t say how nice it was to see friends after the rubbish time we had had. They had been away for the weekend (after recovering from their 2 day hangover after the new years concert we missed (dam it!!) and had bought themselves ... read more

... read more

A couple of housekeeping points before I start: 1. In my last entry, the attempt to load a video clip did not work out. If I get a rainy day, I might look into this - and I might not. 2. The original plan to write every evening has been replaced by a better plan that involves enjoying the trip to the full, and only writing if there’s nothing better to do (like now, on the coach between stops). So, for day 5, the focus is formally on a peninsular south East of Auckland called The Coromandel, though informally, I can see that the question I am working for these 2 days is ‘is New Zealand pretty much the same as the British Isles?’ Let me start with this question. If you were to take a ... read more

OK, so I've finally succumbed to using the crap internet here long enough to write a blog. I've been in Thames for 3 weeks now and it's definitely time to move on! Not a lot has really happened here to mention, but I did get to see a Santa Parade, which appears to be a national thing whereby at Christmas every town has a little parade of various local businesses and such and then at the end someone is dressed as Santa. It was alright, quite nice to see a little town being all community spirited and that. What else? Well, one of the reasons I wanted to stay in one spot for a while was to really get in with the locals and not feel like such a tourist, which I achieved pretty well - ... read more
