An epic adventure in store for today - sea kayaking around Cathedral Cove. We had hoped to do this in the region but after another night with the sounds of rain pattering on the rooftop, we were afraid that this trip would be delayed again. We were delighted to see clear skies greet us in the morning. I had to walk to the end of the road to get a signal on our 2degrees mobile phone and gave the local kayak company a ring. After negotiating for a good rate for a family tour, we geared up for the private adventure. We were greeted by our friendly guide, Nick, at Hahei Beach, just a few minutes north of Hot Water Beach. We had a trio of two-seat kayaks and decided to leave Theo with the expert ... read more

We got back into the car to check out the other side of the peninsula. Our destination - Coromandel Town. Two roads lead to Coromandel, one is a looping paved road that follows the contour of the peninsula and ends up looking like an upside-down "U" and then there is the 309 Road. The 309 Road is a 21-kilometer affair crossing the spine of the peninsula offering roadside attractions as well as a couple of hiking opportunities. A local at the cafe down the street had told me that the 309 Road was "a bit of a bear" but could shave off about 30 minutes of the drive time compared to the paved option. Gertrude agreed, and we have been opting for the scenic routes anyway. It was unanimous- bring on the 309! The 309 got ... read more

I got the 7am ferry and had a nice sunrise trip to Auckland and desided to get the train out of the city. I started at Pukekohe and headed east. Was very bad roads to start with lots of trucks but that only lasted 10k then it was all go. The rest of the road was really fast b est yet. The ride through the gorge was great but not much room on the roads i had to be really carefull. I got into Waihi at 5. i went into count down for a feed and while in there seen all me gear and asked where i was staying to night, i replayed out the bush somewhere. He insisted i came and stay at his place witch i did. The guy was gream and a nice ... read more

Hot water beach campsite. Had breakfast with Hayley and her mum. Back into Whitianga- to Bay Carving to finish my Maori/Celtic bone carving. I sanded it within an inch of it's life to smooth out any imperfections. Quite satisfied with how it came out and good to know it's a one-off personal design. Plus way cheaper than if you were to buy one in Auckland. Got assaulted again by seagulls when trying to eat my fish and chips by the harbour. Drove down road towards Mount Maunganui and after a fair few miles realised that I'd left my laundry in hot water beach campsite like a complete eejit. Drove back and parked up for the night back at Hot Water Beach. Early start in the morning to move myself down the coast to Mount Maunganui. Bone ... read more

Whitianga. Breakfast with Hayley and her mum Jane. Went into Whitianga and walked around. Really good weather and very pleasant harbour town. Feels like a quite a real off place with a lot of sailing and arts. Bone Carving. I decided I wanted to have a go at making my own piece of Maori jewellery. I read about a place here in Whitianga called Bay Carving where you can carve your own piece of bone. I sat down at the campervan park before I went into town and roughly worked out a design. I decided to have a go at combing Celtic and Maori design. There's a bit of a similarity between Maori and Celtic patterns. Decided to make the overall shape that of the Maori fish-hook but formed from Celtic knotworks. The fish-hook is a ... read more

The Coromandel Peninsula is the bit that juts out east of Auckland. Most of it is within about 4-5 hours driving from Auckland itself, so there are quite a few towns where Aucklanders have holiday homes etc. that are quiet except during school holidays. We spent about 5 days in the area. Enjoyed taking our time, going for scenic walks to various view points and beaches. We did splash out a bit to celebrate Jordan's birthday and go for a boat cruise to see the coast line from another angle, sadly this is when Kathie lost her hat in the wind. Generally though we had great weather, and it was nice and relaxing. New Chums beach claims to be a top 20 in the world, have to admit, it was pretty nice. Unfortunately developers are looking ... read more
