Well, we finally got out of Auckland! A few mishaps after the last entry but we moved on. We moved up North to Paihia (Pie Here!)which was beautiful. We stayed in a hostel which was pretty much right on the beach and the weather was scorching! The first thing we did was book a trip on a Catamaran. We sailed for a whole day around the Bay of Islands right near to the famous 'Hole in The Rock' where we anchored between islands and had a barbecue on the boat. During lunch we did our usual snorkelling and kayaking and tried our hand at a bit of waterskiing-except on our knees!!!! Loads of fun and I (Natalie) managed to stay on!!! Less than could be said for Paul...haha!! From the boat we sailed alongside dolphins and ... read more

Yanis send me this picture, but there one year that the picture has been taken. We can see ohoon, one of my 2 best friends at this time (so with Yanis), in a kind of dance, while I'm dreamin', again, about something not deep at all, I'm sure of that... It was the time where we went everytime it was possible fishing, and we get sometimes big fishes that we cook during the night.... Without worries, bro, of course.... I was for sure playin' gypsy jazz on this photo ! one time again...... read more

Sad to say, I had my last day at KeriKeri Plant Production yesterday. It's hard to describe how I'm feeling. Some parts of me want to stay because I have gotten to know people here. The other part is ready for more uncharted land in New Zealand! I felt at times like I really wasn't a traveller, a foreigner of sorts. I felt like I was a local, going about what most people do. Having a full time job, a car, being stable I guess. One of my co-workers, Sandy, started to get all teary eyed yesterday when she said goodbye to me. Of course, that got me started, so we were both crying and sort of laughing at the same. She said to me, "You damned backpackers! You worm your way into our hearts, and ... read more

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a decent New Years. I spend New Years on the beach in Paihai, watching fireworks with Michaela and Geshe. For those of you who have experienced the debautchery of the Niagara Grape and Wine festival, I must say that sadly Paihai is about 100 times worse. Every other person was holding up someone else, and the police, they were out in force. I wouldn't have wanted to be a police officer for sure! They set up big holding tanks for the people who get into trouble, drink underage, or get into fights. I had a more peaceful night then most I would say. I was in bed by 2am! Sad but true, I am starting to feel my age. I caught myself looking at these younger people and ... read more

My Christmas was great. There's so much to say but so little time. I woke up at about 8 am to find Christmas presents being handed out by Andrew (the manager at the hostel) and having a glass of some cheap champange (better then nothing). I spoke with Mom, Dad and Nicole and opened my presents. The family calendar is quite the hit down here in New Zealand! I then went off to Tom and Julia's to meet the rest of their family and have a nice New Zealand Christmas Meal. It consisted of avacado and shrimp, lobster tail, chicken, ham, potatoes, salad, and pasta. For dessert we had triffle with a lot of brandy in it. I really felt like I was going to breathe fire, apple pie, fruit cake (this one was kinda yuckie) ... read more

I had a great day today, and nice night last night. Kerikeri puts on a Caroles at Dusk event every year, so I decided to go with a couple of people from the hostel to sing some caroles and try and get into the mood here amongst such summer weather. I just thought to myself when we were singing "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas", how could they sing it when they've never experienced it, and sing with such gusto at that. I then started to sort of, kind of miss not having a white Christmas. Today we were off work early at 3pm to have some social time at work with beers, champange and snacks. I then received more presents from Tom and Julia (bosses) and Pam. Both packages of which I think contain chocolate. ... read more

Here are some final pictures from Fiordland and the last days up on the North Island. All in all, an amazing experience. I'm sure I'll get around to seeing all of you and telling you all about it, as well as what you are up to. The beach pictures were taken in the Northland area; specifically the Bay of Islands and the Karikari Peninsula. The beaches were were perfect. White sand, clear water, and absolutely no people. We just camped out right off the beach for a few days and spent the days soaking in the rays and cherishing our last days in NZ. Enjoy!... read more

Just a little update today. It's official!!! The bed in the van is made and completed, with enough storage space under it to store a least a couple of bodies (if necessary!) I also went to my boss's house last night to sew the curtains for the van since I spent time this weekend drilling holes in the van to hang the curtain wire. I'll post pictures in a couple of days as I have to wash the curtains so everything that comes in contact with the curtains dosen't turn maroon. After completing the bed on Saturday, Gesche (a nice German girl and potential travelmate) and Michaela (the hostel manager on the weekend) went down to the Fairy Pools behind the hostel for a nice swim since it was about 30 out plus humidity. Not cold ... read more
