Easter Weekend=4 days off work, what better time to head north to the Bay of Islands??? We left on Friday morning, only to find that the entire city of Auckland was also heading out of town. So, the "roadtrip" took hours longer than it was supposed to, but we weren't in any hurry and had a good time anyways. We got to Paihia, which was about an hour or so before where we were staying so we stopped and checked out the shops, the beaches and had a drink at the bar on the end of the pier. It's a really cool little beach town and there was lots going on. Plus the weather was PERFECT which we hadn't expected cause the forcast had been for rain. Very exciting. Eventually we made our way further ... read more

So we have arrived in New Zealand, as far away as we will ever get from home. A real mixture of receptions here. We arrived to free coffee and tea at the airport and friendly and fast customs/baggage retrieval. Chatted to a lovely, although completely mad woman at the airport, before aiming to hire a camper van. Unfortunately, the high season has been extended as campers are still in high demand, so not only did we have to phone 20 companies to find one, but they are also more expensive than we thought. We do however now have one that works (just), after Alex's minimal mechanical expertise did earn us an upgrade to a newer model after running rings around the manager who it seemed had never driven car let alone seen a van before in ... read more

Spent the 1st week of “vacation” in Auckland getting all the boring stuff out of the way i.e. Bank accounts, tax numbers etc …….. However I did meet up with Laura (sister) and Paul (Laura's boi) which was good as I hadn’t seen them in over a year. We managed to pack in a few bits and bobs such as going for a meal at the top of the sky tower and going to Kelly Tarlton’s ice world which was errrrr unique. On my last night in Auckland I managed to win a bungee jump off Auckland Harbour Bridge. The free jump expires at the end of March so I shall be heading back that way before the month ends. Auckland was ok but at the end of the day it’s a city where money tends ... read more

12 Feb - Went north to Kerikeri today along Hwy 1 - did a bit of a detour to take in part of the scenic route along the ocean. Arrived about 4:00PM to meet the Ferguson's - Trevor and Cath - Wonderful folks and very welcoming! 13 Feb - Trevor took us out sightseeing north of Kerikeri today. We went through to see Maori settlements, beautiful beaches and the Rainbow Warrior Memorial. The actual wreck of the Rainbow Warrior was re-sunk north of the penninsula which is a favoured dive spot. We saw places we never would have found on our own! Thanks Trevor !! 14 Feb - Happy Valentines Day! We visited the museums in Kerikeri this morning. The Kerikeri Mission Station. This included the oldest timber building in NZ "Mission House" and the "Stone ... read more

New Year in the North Well as I had 4 days off for the New Year break I thought I would head up to the far North. This also worked out as my friend Ros was arriving into Auckland on the 30th. The Friday at work was fun as we headed out for lunch at the pub and then I got to leave early as I was catching a plane up to Auckland. I took the airport flyer bus and headed off round the bay. The bus takes forever to get to the airport as it visits most of Wellington but as I wasn't in a rush I was happy to just sit there and think about the 4 days when I wouldn't have to be in the office. Even got a bit of Lonely Planet ... read more

Yesterday was a much improved day on my Hellish journey. I went into the town of Keri Keri and had a wonder round. Nice largish town, has a McDonalds and a Subway and both New World and Woolworths supermarkets. I picked up loads of leaflets to see what was going on. Quite disappointed that a working steam sawmill wasn't operating. I had lunch in town, a nice Greek salad and a huge piece of Hummingbird Cake. It's banana and pineapple and maybe something else I can't remember. It's lovely and light, like a cross between a banana cake and a carrot cake, which a cream cheese style topping. I might have lunch there again today... I tooko a drive out to Matauri Bay, which is where Dave and Sue are living. The bay looks gorgeous. It ... read more

Bleurgh. Yesterday was horrible. Actually the morning was nice enough. I just about managed to pack all of my belongings into my two backpacks. When i got to the air port they were more than the allowance though! Have to do some pruning. I spent the morning relaxing, painting my toe nails, spending time with nana and Sophie and playing with their two gorgeously cute kittens. Liz took me to the airport for a 3pm flight to Auckland. It was on another little plane. I still got RSI from the engines under me. Once at Auckland I got a hire car (which was lucky I think, as the first two places I went in to were all hired out and I was getting a bit worried). It took me ages to get over the Bay Bridge. ... read more

Well we've worked out why we need the rat race ... so we can afford life's luxuries like Magic Cottage. This was a "romantic hideaway" we booked while we were still earning spondoolies back in the UK. It's basically a little hut right on the river Takou leading out to beautiful Takou Bay and was to be our home for Christmas. The cottage is very near Kerikeri just north of the Bay of Islands so we popped in there first to stock up on all the usual christmas goodies. It is a pretty town and the bakehouse sells great pies! On checking in at Magic Cottage we were suitably wowed and settled in right away. We were very impressed to find that Paul's parents had arranged a wine delivery from a local winery - Cottle Hill. ... read more
