Hello and Happy Christmas to all our family and friends. This is just a wee Christmas message so that you can catch up with what we’ve been up to. We both finished work on Christmas Eve (they work you hard here!) - Graeme had his work xmas lunch after they finished on Friday, then went to the pub with some work mates. We started our Christmas celebrations on Friday night with a bbq at Luke and Kenny’s - it was a big family affair. Luckily the rain held off long enough for the barbie to be used, and we were even able to eat outside. Our Christmas Day started at Luke’s Uncle Clive’s (sorry, I totally failed to take any pictures there). You’ll just have to believe me when I say that it was warm and ... read more

Hello all A surprise entry as we are in the Air NZ executive lounge at AKL airport and found a computer with free on line access Just bought a compact flash card reader so am now able to connect to USB port without needing access from slot on computer. This has been a bit of a problem in some areas notably in the centre of Auckland where there is lots of cheap access but most don't have or even know what you are asking for when you mention cf card reader. Flight due out at 14.10 and into KL at 20.00 local time - 11 hr flight. Had a nice chat with others at B&B last night exchanging ideas on NZ and places to go for them this time and for us next time!! Bye for ... read more

Hello all Well it's nearly time to leave New Zealand and return to UK via KL and Langkawi We've had a great time with generally good weather but the locals tell us the weather has been much colder and unsettled than usual for the time of year. We left Coromandel on 28th and drove north up the west coast of the peninsula to see some of the lovely isolated rugged coves and then re-traced our route down the west coast via Thames to Miranda hot springs where we spent Sat night. Again took advantage of outdoor hot springs at 38' to relax up to 10pm. Moved on top Auckland on Sunday am and arrived in time to see the Santa parade thgrough the main streets. The parade took about 75min to pass where we were standing. ... read more

There hasn’t been a travelblog for a while, and since we’ve finally done something worth writing about, I thought I should give you all an update. The past month has been all about work. Weekends have been spent drinking (of course!) going to a Highland Games (weird in November!), a shopping splurge which means that we now have computer and internet facilities at home (yay!) and generally pottering about in this city we are calling home for the moment. This weekend we’ve had out first visitor from home - Vicki, who used to work with Graeme at Glasgow (yes, she’s a planner too) has been on holiday in Australia for a few weeks and decided to pop over and see NZ in a week. She arrived on Thursday evening, and of course the first thing to ... read more

Pihi is one of the closest beaches to the house and the one we went to most of the time. Its where i attempted to surf, but also spent a few days out swimming in the 'blue pool', chiiling out on the beach or watching the surf comps held there. Had a few meals at the life savers club (which i almost got thrown out of because i wasnt wearing a top that covered my shoulders), had a few BBQ at Neil and Paulas friends Mark and Gill or at Paul and Kirstens. One good day in piha was spent at Neils friend Peej's stag doo at the bowling club. I beat my uncle Neil in a close first game then got beaten by Peej (had to let him win as it was his doo!!!honest)... read more

Before I got to New Zealand the plan was to get a job at the Hardware café but Neil and Paula mentioned Toby Restaurant around the corner that I hadn’t seen last time I was here. Handed my CV to both and the Hardware had enough staff but Tobys had just opened again after being closed down for serving minors!! Went for a trial there and met the staff and a few locals then got called into to talk about shifts with Jeanette (the owner). Supposed to start the week after but she rang me the next day to ask if I could work. Learned how to set up the bar and all the wines, beers, till etc and met the regulars again. Got to know all the staff and customers quite well although I didn’t ... read more
