So, on to Auckland. We flew in about lunchtime - the flight was only 3 hours and no jet lag to deal with so we liked it (despite being made to watch the Hilary Duff movie, Raise Your Voice. Just don't, it's not worth it). We're staying with my friends Dave and Claire from Warwick at the moment which has been great. They have a flat right in the middle of the city, underneath the Sky Tower, so that's been great for getting about and seeing what Auckland has to offer. And regaining some sort of night life! The first few days we spent wandering around Auckland itself and familiarising ourselves with where all the coffee shops/clotes stores were. You know, important stuff. We went to a couple of museums too. The art museum was free ... read more

A very early start for the long drive North, estimates vary between an unlikely 8 hours and a conservative 12 for the drive from Wellington to Auckland, I always like to shoot down the middle so we plan for 10 hours. In order to get to our hostel at Auckland Airport for 8pm, and the latest check-in time, we must get the 05:30 ferry from Picton, this means arriving at the terminal for 04:30 which in turn involves getting up before 4am. Now I've been caught banging on the door of the Penny Black at four in the morning looking for a pint on my way home, I've even watched Davy and Jolo eat dodgy looking pies in the Dirty Windies at 4am during the World Cup in Japan but for the life of me I ... read more

Booked and paid for a seat on an Emirates flight bound for Dubai then onto London, booked and paid for a Top Deck Trip through Europe in June. Booked a hostel in London for April, all sorted to see the UK family. Bought a pack, opened a bank account, saved some cash, quit my job and there’s a sign in the window of my car begging people to buy it. So all that’s left is the big countdown. Still have a few weeks left at work, so I’m just countin’ down… Anyways here’s me and Lou all dressed for the nice NZ summer when she was here in December, any my gorgeous niece India all crashed out! You forget that a big part of your trip is dreaming about it, can’t wait till the dreaming is ... read more

After missing the 1st of Feb (it didn't exist for us because we crossed the international dateline backwards) we landed in Auckland on the 2nd of Feb. This article will probably be added to shortly as we write about our adventures so far in NZ. Suffice it so say that we have bought a little van and now have it kitted out with everything from a queen-sized mattress to a chest of drawers. In our little home-on-wheels we have travelled about around the Northland region (the area north of Auckland) and seen some wonderful scenery in the generally great NZ weather. To get your tastebuds tingling here's a picture of "Blackie" our '89 Toyota Hiace 2.4D..... To commence the NZ story, we spent several days getting over the jetlag and investigating the many ways it is ... read more

We just wandered around town today, down the shore, around the parks and most importantly we went up the Sky Tower. The Sky Tower is amazing, 360 degree views around the city, some fools even jump from it with silly bits of elastic around their ankles but not us, we'll just pay the $10 to watch please. We went for an all you can eat buffet for dinner but we're wiser now, I just go up and heap the plate (one person) then we both dig in, today was chinese and it was $10 a plate, about 4 pound for dinner can't be bad. We had a nice walk along the river back to Parnell Rise then through the village and back to the hostel, another quiet night however we did buy a carry-out, well one ... read more

We're staying in the trendy bit of Auckland now, Parnell, in some Buddhist house, we didn't know it was a Buddhist house when we booked it but it's kinda cool, well I think it's alright but Fiona thinks it's full of beasties, come to mention it I have been scratching a lot.... Parnell is really nice, it's loads of big houses and trendy shops and that, it has a real cafe culture and there's loads of bars and restaurantes that open out with seating on the street, my kinda town, remindes us of the Shore in Edinburgh on a sunny day. It's only a 10 minute bus ride to the centre of town, Queen Street, where we were staying last week but it seems a million miles away, it's good to have a different perspective on ... read more

We were up early today for our breakfast in the hostel, $7 for all you can eat cereal, fruit, toast and that, we had a good skelp at it then out to the Tourist Info for advice on cars V buses. To cut a two hour chat, and a long story short we've rented a Toyota Sprinter, (1999), 1600 AUTOMATIC for 29 days starting at 10am tomorrow, about 30 hours from now!! I've never driven an automatic but I'm sure it'll be straight forward, they drive on the same side of the road from us and the only difference I can see is that you give way infront of you if the car is turning right. What I mean is you're at a traffic light and it goes green, there's a car coming towards you but ... read more

We got into our hostel at 2pm today then promptly went to sleep, we never slept much on the plane so had been up for about 30 hours, a few hours later we are up at them and out to explore Auckland city. Already we love Auckland, it's an amzing city, it's twice the size of London with just over one million people, it's really spread out but the centre is quite small, small enough to walk everywhere, we're down at the Harbour side of Queen Street. It's really like Edinburgh, loads of greenery, plenty familiar shops and loads of English accents. We set about exploring the centre, the Sky Tower, the Harbour Bridge, Albert Park and down the Waterfront. Now Fiona said that we would save money here and it is really cheap, well the ... read more

We left Hawai'i at 23:50 on Monday January 17th, we were flying for 9 hours and landed at Auckland International Airport at 08:00 on Wednesday January 19th, wtf happened? We were 10 hours behind you in the UK and are now 13 hours ahead of you, the time difference between Hawai'i and New Zealand in only 1 hour but we crossed the internation date line so lose a day. It's all good though, we're in Auckland and safe and well in our Hostel, well we will be at 2pm, we're currenty in an internet cafe opposite. We've got some photo's to add at a later date but I don't know how we'll get on in New Zealand for internet time as we're moving about a lot, I will do my best to keep you all updated. ... read more

The long-awaited summer has finally arrived in Auckland, and people have stopped blaming us for bringing the rain with us! The past week has been absolutely gorgeous, and I’ve been looking out of the window of my 14th floor office wishing I was outside and praying that the fine weather would last to the weekend. Graeme has managed to get outside and enjoy some of the weather on site visits with work - wearing his regulation sun hat and sunscreen (provided by his work) of course. We even had our dinner on our balcony last night - it was a wee bit breezy and we nearly lost our take-away pizza on one occasion, but we managed… This morning we got up early with big plans for the day, and would you believe it - not a ... read more
