I realised the other day that we’ve managed to get through the whole of March without a travelblog entry, which is a little slack, so here’s a wee update of what we’ve been doing. Goin’ Fishin’ At the beginning of March I had a great day’s fishing on Luke’s brother-in-law Robbie’s boat. Graeme was playing rugby so couldn’t come, but Kenny, Debbie (a Glaswegian colleague of Kenny’s) and I had a fantastic day. The weather was gorgeous, the sea calm, and I’d like to say the fish were biting but they weren’t really… We caught about 8 snapper the whole day, and some were too small to keep so we had to put them back in. Robbie was fantastic - he taught us how to fish, he baited our hooks and he even gutted and filleted ... read more

It's 12h30, woke up @10h30. Had my coffee watching cricket in Devonport's Domain (just in front of my house). @14h00 will go to Astrid's place. I met her on the ferry (Devonport to Auckland), she's French, working @Vodafone. She also lives in Devonport @Narrowneck. As she is moving house with her family, she told me to come to check for furniture that she will give me :-) . Nice from her! Will save me money and time. Then i will see my friend ("bro'" like we say here) Kim. I met him also on the ferry. Cool guy. We are exanching CD's. Last Friday we met after work, had a beer on devonport's peer and, after a Duvel (Belgian Beer 8,5%) he was already a bit high... hehehe It's 12h37, vgot to take a shower and ... read more

Pressure is when you have to write a 2000 word report of a significant seminar and have about six hours to do it in. That's what I'm up against today-- the need to write up an event last Friday in which six Christian politicians (representing different parties) came before a panel of Christian leaders to explain what they were on about. How to write up eight hours of talking in 2000 words, and somehow be fair and objective at the same time? It's all in a day's work! I shall come back this evening and let you know how I got on.... read more

Hi Bloggees.. how are you all? Apologies for the lack of blogs in the last couple of weeks but read on and you'll soon see that time has been of the essence - the opportunity literally hasn't arisen. We had our first lie-in this morning since Auckland on the 23rd of last month and that was only till 9!! Just to let you know it has been raining hard on us for 2 days now with more planned for tomorrow - so after that information and hopefully the subsequent smiles on your faces, we'll begin to make you hate us once again..! New Zealand has been everything we could have hoped for and more. Its certainly true when they say that NZ is the "World in one place" - we've seen Beaches and Sand Dunes, Coves, ... read more

It's official! I am tan. At least on my arms and chest. And I'm probably the only one who realizes my skin is a darker shade than usual but I'm pleased nonetheless. I've spent the 4 days in Auckland trying to figure out where I go from here and how. At first, I was considering buying a car or meeting up with some others and renting a camper. But there are loads of warnings that many of the roads in the most scenic areas are treacherous at best. Plus, petrol is expensive and there are a few other administrative/maintenance issues that detered me from getting a cheap ride. So I have decided to go with Kiwi Experience (www.kiwiexperience.com) - the most recommended travel service amongst backpackers. They are highly knowledgable, well traveled and make a point ... read more

Hi All, Here are some photos from basically my backyard at the moment. I am staying with friends Yasmine and Tony in Karekare Beach about 60 minutes west of Auckland. A 3-5 minute walk from their door through some wilderness gets us to the beach you see below. I've been here about 3 days now. We've been into Auckland proper once and to the Corbane Estate Arts Center a couple of times where Tony is helping organize the music acts for a community festival being held there tomorrow (www.wayoutwestfest.org.nz). Tonight we will be heading into town for a little clubbing and to meet up with some people I've been emailing with prior to my arrival. Still a lot of lounging on my part. I will be working at the festival tomorrow so I am not totally ... read more

We haven’t been up to anything exciting (for ‘exciting’ read ‘out of Auckland’) recently, but we have some stories to share with you. The great rugby boot hunt New Zealand is a funny place. Rugby is the national game here. Boys, girls, men and women play it, families go and watch it, everyone is intensely proud of the All Blacks. It’s the start of the rugby season here. So when Graeme decided that he needed a new pair of rugby boots to play said game, we assumed that this would be accomplished in the space of a lunchtime. WRONG!! He came home dejected, having visited the three fine sports shops that Henderson shopping centre has to offer, and reported that not one of them had a pair of rugby boots. Football (soccer) boots galore, but none ... read more
