Yesterday I caught another ferry, this time to Davenport. Its about 10mins across the bay from Auckland, and is a nice retreat from the big city living (hehe). I can best decribe it as a small seaside town, with lots of quaint bistros, coffee houses and independent shops. Pity I've got no money to spend there! So instead i occupied myself with cheaper attractions (for cheap, read free). Down towards the naval base there's the Auckland Naval Museum, about a ten minute walk from the ferry terminal. The museum is about the the size of a postage stamp and is set in what can only be described as a grandmothers living room. Its still a facinating sight though and you can see the pride the Kiwis take in their navy's involvement in the world wars, especially ... read more

So it has been a while since we have got in contact with you guys, I know that you have been concerned but we have been having such a riot in South America that we clean forgot that we should keep you informed. But after a bout of Ovenstone nagging, we all know that this treatment could bring down multi national organisations, I have come to my senses and we are trying to catch up. As the following blog is going to describe the time when my parents were visiting, I must state for the record that whatever comments are made are purely in jest and not meant seriously. I know that there are sensitive ears out there. So back to blogworld, Jen and Frank had always planned to come out and visit Em and I ... read more

Today I arrived in New Zealands biggest city, Auckland. I arrived at around 1pm, in gorgeous sunshine, and a clear sky. It was the usual drill, check-in, and then get out. Since i have a whole day here on friday, I decided to visit Devonport for the afternoon. To get there, I had to walk down to the ferry piers, and catch a ferry across the harbour to Devonport. The boat takes about ten minutes, and runs back and forth all day long. In Devonport, I decided to follow the walking tour from my guidebook. This took me first up the main street, which is a lot more traditional compared to bustling Auckland city centre. Lots of cool little independant shops and boutiques, with the odd art gallery for good measure. Also a nice selection of ... read more

We are in New Zealand! It only took us six days to get here. Our first impression of Auckland is lovely. It is a busy city but hilly and green. There was a lot of traffic leaving the airport and getting to our hotel, which is right in the heart of the city, but the timing couldn't have been worse - rush hour. Luckily, we were able to leave our luggage at the airport and just take an overnight bag. The kids weren't feeling so great. The boys both had ear infections, but we forced everyone out of the hotel after a quick cup of tea/hot chocolate and a brief rest. Since it was late in the afternoon already, and we were only going to get one evening in Auckland, we headed down to the water ... read more

Unsure of what to do on a Sunday afternoon, and after feeling a bit sorry for ourselves due to our inaction, we decide to take the short ferry crossing across the harbour to Devonport...it turned out to be a memorable little trip to a place we returned to many times...... read more

Today is our last day in New Zealand - how sad. We walked down to the ferry terminal and caught the ferry over to Devonport. We had a lovely morning exploring in Devonport and then we caught the ferry back to Auckland. We collected our bags from the Mercure and caught a taxi to the airport. We travelled home via Emirates - best flight ever - we travelled in style. They even gave us a three course meal!! Sarah kindly picked us up from the airport and brought us home to North Avoca. Thankyou Sarah. We have had a fabulous trip indeed, thankyou to all those who contributed to this trip. My 50th birthday will be a very memorable one to me. The most special part of it all was spending time with my New Zealand ... read more

(Tina) What a lovely place Akaroa is, sorry Dad, but its a bit of a French settlement stuck right out on the Banks Peninsula of NZ and it really is beautiful, we had a lovely two night stay, even the local pub stayed open after 10pm! After our whirlwind tour of the South Island is was a lovely place to rest up. (Lynda) Before we left we wanted to visit the Marae (anyone who was paying attention to Karen's blog will know what that is) a Maori meeting house, and yet again a lovely little church nixt to it (the churches here are fab - Tina says they remind her of Little House on the Prairie). (Tina) On Saturday we checked out of the lovely La Rochelle Motel, handed our hire car, undamaged again, just, back ... read more

Vatsa oli rauhoittunut ja soin taas aamupalan. Koska aamulla oli viilea, en kiirehtinyt suihkuun menemista. Suihkuunhan pitaa kulkea ulkokautta. Onneksi paivalla lampeni ja aurinko paistoi. Lahdin kaymaan laivalla Devonportin niemella. Poikkesin paikallisessa kirjastossa. Kavin syomassa voileivan. Kun tarjoilija puhui joillekin asiakkaille espanjaa, kysyin miten han osaa sita ja han kertoi olevansa Argentiinasta. Kavin illalla kylassa Lauralle. Vein punaviinia. Han oli laittanut uusseelantilaista ruokaa: lammasmakkaraa ja kumaraa. Tapasin myos hanen vuokranantajansa ja kaksi muuta alivuokralaista: ranskalaisen ja saksalaisen tyton. ... read more
