Carla: We have been so lucky with the wonderful hospitality we’ve had ‘down under’, Sam & Bill continued the trend of top class, warm, friendly and energetic hosting when we arrived in Auckland. They once lived very near us in North London and have been lucky enough to de-camp to Devonport – a perfect peninsula just across the harbour from downtown Auckland – and have this gorgeous lifestyle of white clapboard houses, picket fences, organic delis, beaches and beautiful views in all directions. They are honest about the downsides of living in such a small suburb (the total population of Auckland is only 1.4million and Devonport has about 6000 people); they told us how “everyone knows everyone” and so you’ve got to make sure you remain discrete and careful when chatting to neighbours and parents in ... read more

I apologize for the lack of updates recently. I have started a new job about weeks back that has kept me very, very busy. I now work for a supplement company in Auckland. I sort supplement pills for defects for up to 14 hours a day, 6 days a week. It is not hard work, but it can get really dull staring at the same thing for the whole day. The work is very manual, so there are no machines to roll the pills, and everything is done by hand. Before securing this job, and after having made the decision to leave my job as an avocado packer, I travelled the Coromandel Peninsular for a week. After that week of travel, I already got a call to join this supplement company. I hope to share some ... read more

203 days is what we have until we leave these fine shores for adventure. I met with a friend yesterday who flys on the same day with her family for their 3 month trip of a lifetime. We met to compare notes. She has booked accommodatian and transport for the whole of their trip. I on the other hand have managed to book 3 nights in Kuala Lumpur in a hostel I've since discovered is over a brothel. I felt somewhat inadecuate! The major detail holding up any major planning is that we are still unsure of what the work situation i and whether a sabbatical will be possible. I'm hoping by T-180 we'll know what we're doing and them we'll start to make progress! ... read more

Why doesn't everyone live in New Zealand? We seem to specialise in unsociable arrivals and departures! We landed in Auckland at 0420 to be met by Derek (married to Bob's cousin Louise). Their house is in Swanson, out to the west of Auckland, and we spent four happy days there catching up with family news and sightseeing. Auckland is a marvelous place to start a New Zealand visit. Everywhere one looks there are stunning views. We took the ferry from the main harbour area over to Devonport and promptly decided we could happily live there. It is full of graceful 19th century houses and little pavement restaurants and cafes all looking across the harbour. The new naval museum was one of the best we have ever been to as well. We climbed to the top of ... read more

Well we've done it! After a couple of years thinking, dreaming and talking about it the decision has been made and we've booked tickets. D-day is December 1st flying with Air Asia X from Chch to Kuala Lumpur. So many questions, will the plane fall from the sky? (actually that's more my paranioa than an actual question) How will the children handle the travel? Will Murray miss work? Will I miss work? (actually I know the answer to that one already, NO). Who should we get travel insurance through? How many vaccinations will we need? We also have a list as long as my arm of things to do before we go. Packing up our lives is a daunting prospect but the excitiement at the thought of spending a year together as a family exploring the ... read more

Wow! I made it! Long flight. It feels like September in terms of temperature. Everyone is wearing black winter jackets and clothes. The whimps. ha ha Its a sunny day and Auckland looks so beautiful. I arrived before 5 a. m. and got to cheap hotel by 6. Slept four hours, got up, showered and took bus downtown. Travel tip when landing at airport: buy food before you get on shuttle bus to hotel. There is a cafe with packaged tikka veg curry for $8 NZ which I think is $6 Can. My airport hotel has restaurant that isn't open in morning or during the day. A curry, no matter how cold, is satisfying with a cup of hotel-room tea. I've left my mark in Auckland...literally. At the bus stop outside of hotel, when an older ... read more

Ellie and I slept again until 11am. Finally I feel like our "jetlag" has worn off. Grabbed a strong frothy skinny latte on the way to the bus station at St Helliers shops, then watched a guy windsurfing in the sea while we waited for the bus to arrive. He did really well and we could see how difficult it must be to do this sport. Headed downtown, then boarded another bus to Devenport, a historic seaside village on Auckland's North Shore that is also home to the New Zealand Navy base. We had lunch in a lovely indoor cafe with potted plants, and birds flying around. I was so engrossed in my book that I couldn’t even look up to eat my toasie until I'd finished it - anyone that knows me well would tell ... read more

So I pretty much have been working every weekend since I came back from my holiday to the South Island. No real surprises there! I have not been doing much with my days off during the week as hubby has been busy with a paper he is working on and well we are trying to save a little bit now. Well last Thursday the weather was great so I took the opportunity to head to Devonport as I actually had not checked it out as yet and well I could not forget Devonport. It is only a 12 minute ferry ride away! I had the usual guided walk from a leaflet that I had picked up from the tourist information office in Auckland. My walk started along the waterfront, along King Edward Parade past the Devonport ... read more

We were invited to John's 70th and what a great night it was. The food was lovely, and it was great meeting up with people that we had not seen for a long time. Graham met up with a fellow, who was in the same class as Graham at Wellington College many years ago. John said that 'he was now officially classed as old'. As we all know you are only as old as you feel!!!! It was the most beautiful evening. Looking out over the Waitamata Harbour with a full moon on a clear night is a very special experience.... read more

to whom this may concern, Alright so I'm still getting used to this whole blog thing and I'm also not the sharpest tool in the shed... with that said the photos that are supposed to be connected to this entry are actually linked to the last entry I made...oops. At this point we are still in Auckland for one more full day and then an early flight out to Chirstchurch in the morning. Yesterday we were advised by a local to check out Devonport which is like a 10 min. ferry ride from the main city part of Auckland. Really cool place...kinda like a Martha's Vineyard if I had to compare it to anything...or if I just wanted to. Devonport was an old navy base from WWI and WWII, riddled with underground tunnels and old artillery ... read more
