New Zealand lived up to its billing as the Land of the Long White Cloud. Even though it is summer down under, we encountered cool, overcast, rainy weather during most of our stay in Kiwi-land. Our Wellington tour guide Murray said, “Australia has a bad climate, but good weather; while New Zealand has a good climate, but bad weather.” We have found this to be true. Meanwhile, we have been following the adventures of our rescued sailor, Bernt. After he left the Mariner in Dunedin he hired a fishing boat and went in search of his half million dollar yacht. After several days they found Horizons floating around in the Southern Ocean. They towed the boat back to Bluff Harbour which is located on the tip of the South Island where repairs will be done. Bernt ... read more

Sunday afternoon, my journey “Down Under” begins in Miami on a full American Airlines flight to Los Angeles. Today the weather in South Florida is a big news items as temperatures are in the 50's and this maybe an omen for what lies ahead in my journey. My flight is late leaving Miami. En route to Los Angeles we have a medical emergency and make an unscheduled stop in Phoenix, Arizona. Under overcast skies we touchdown in LA about 8 hours after leaving Miami. I stroll around LAX and have dinner at The International Terminal (5) as I have about a two and a half hour wait before my flight to Sydney. Tonight apparently there are hundreds maybe even thousands of people with same plans as I have to go “Down Under” because the flights to ... read more

Was up quite early thanks to jet lag so I got my stuff together and got ready. When I came back in to the room the couple in my room had moved into just one bed which was awesome (not!) so I was quick to get outta there and go get my breakfast. When I came back in to the room to get my stuff since I was switching rooms (long story!) the couple were doing stuff in the bed that I just didnt need to see haha. (2nd time in one week.....just my luck) Moved into my new room with 2 irish girls who are super nice. We hopped on a free Auckland tour with Kiwi Experience around 10 am. Our driver was Dave who was pretty funny but a bit nutty too haha. Our ... read more

We arrived in NZ May (hard to believe we have been here nearly 6 months already!) we have been in the new house 5 months and are 1/2 way to starting the next chapter.. or rather the next novel in the trilogy. Yep for those that haven't heard Debs pregnant with our first born. Something that certainly changes life or so I'm told. This will be the final blog as we really have finished the journey into our new life now. But first a few pictures that hopefully show why we moved the other side of the world and traded in great jobs with great friends for life in NZ. The coast line of NZ really is stunning. The place is a natural paradise with all the things that one could want for a wholesome life. ... read more

Today we drove the pacific coast highway from Wakatone and stopped to play in the sand and surf. The waves were powerful and we underestimated them a few times. I tried to get close for pictures and ended up getting hit by the wave and it REALLY wanted me to come for a swim. It was so hard to stand upright! We both got so soaked we had to change our clothes. We shopped in Tauranga and drove through Kiwi Country, the Kiwi capital of the world. We stopped at a roadside stand and bought a bag of kiwi for a dollar (60 cents American)! At Karangahake gorge we got out and walked across 2 suspension bridges. I climbed the remains of a gold-mining plant. At one point my mom said, “oh you can’t climb that” ... read more

I arrived in New Zealand on the 12th in the late afternoon. Louise picked me up from the airport at Auckland and we checked in to a hostel she had booked. That night we wandered around the city centre and had a good Indian meal in Parnell. The next morning we went to some local markets, to the Auckland Domain park, and then to the Auckland War Memorial Museum. The museum was good, Louise showed me lots of (stuffed) local wildlife and we saw Maori pieces and a culture show which was awesome - complete with Haka and fighting technique demonstrations. Unfortunately we had only just hit the war section when they were closing, which was a shame. We then bought food and cooked up some fajitas at the hostel. The next morning we drove to ... read more

Day 6 - Wednesday 19th November We have an early start this morning, up at 5.00 to get organised and onward to the airport for 6.30. Our taxi driver is quietly courteous and efficient. Unfortunately, our high regard for Melbourne Airport immigration officers is completely undermined by their departure security officials; curt, lacking communication skills and unhelpful. The first official reprimands David for touching the person screener as he walks through. The next official demands to weigh our hand luggage. He questions David: “Have you a laptop in the case?” “Yes.” “Take it out and carry it to the X-ray machine, otherwise your case will be overweight!” David: “Sorry but I haven’t seen any notices about weight restrictions for hand luggage. I thought it was the airlines that checked these things?” “No.” We collect our things ... read more

Sunday 26th October,2008 Woke to rain. After breakfast Mary and Edward picked us up and drove across the Harbour Bridge to the charming seaside village of Devonport. A lovely unique village atmosphere with speciality shops, galleries and cafes. After a wander around, we drove up to Mt Wellington - very windy - for some spectacular views and then to a lovely restaurant - McHughes - right on the bay. More lovely views over to Raratonga. The weather improved as we drove to the Museum and into the Conservatory. What magnificent flowers displayed in two sections and then into the fernery. When we reached Mt Eden it was absolutely freezing but we stopped and took a photo of Kupe the first Polynesian navigator to reach Auckland. After driving through the suburbs we saw Mary’s old abodes and ... read more
