Woke up at about 9am. Packed my things from Doug and Louise's house and moved in to Grafton Hall (Carlton House number 19 on the second floor) with a tour of the grounds and building. Made one last run to the Warehouse for some dorm room essentials and then proceeded to play tourist :-) Devonport...gorgeous seaside town with tiny shops and quaint cafes. Excellent art galleries and amazing views looking back into the city Northhead...hilltop overlooking the bay and surrounding islands. canons face the bay so that the Japanese couldn't enter the Auckland harbour back in the day... read more

Getting ready to go OK, I have a travelblog now... Next step is to figure out how to use it in the 22 sleeps before I go! As it turned out the Info Systems uni paper which included learning basic HTML may actually come in useful. Who said formal education didn't teach anything practical? I know the map is a massively zoomed in version just showing where I am right now, but I'm told when I start adding new places it will zoom out and be normal... ... read more

Hello, everyone. It is just short of 5 o'clock on Valentines day. I went on a tour of Auckland to a couple pretty interesting places, including Parnell, the Auckland harbor bridge, and Devonport. Took some real cool pictures from devonport which I will put up tomorrow or sometime soon. I'm heading to a bar with two couples i've met for a couples night. They dragged me along, but we'll see how it is. Tomorrow I'm going to a remote island in the bay near Auckland which has amazing beaches. I guess it's beautiful, so hopefully I will have some mroe cool pics. On saturday, I am going to the rugby match, so that should be sweet, and hopefully I will get some more pics. But thats it for now, I was supposed to be at the ... read more

... read more

Auckland is not the prettiest of places, and you can understand why people who come here after the South island are not enamoured with it. However, it is big and sprawlling and it is easy to find your own wee bit of paradise depending on what you are in to. Richard and Neils place is fabulous, right in the foot hills of the Waitakeri Hill's with lots or native bush, on their doorstep - bliss!! We started the day early at 5:30, as our body clock is still a bit messed up, and headed straight to the supermarket called "foodtown". We stocked up on some goodies before heading back for a breakfast barbie of lamb snags and fresh bread from a wee chinese bakery mmm nice!! It was then that we realised just how hot it ... read more

Hello, finally it's my last day in Auckland, and I'm glad. Because I think I've seen everything now (several times)! Friday I met a german girl in the hostel, and we went for a drink together. What started liked a relaxed quiet evening, ended up in a very absurd party night! Pictures will be added later... Today I went to Devonport (other side of the harbour). I did a walk on two extinct volcanoes. It was nice, but not stunning.. Anyhow, today arrives Marian (Antwerp) and tomorrow we leave together to the antara retreat, where we will work for a week! Let's see. ... read more

Right now, I have those lazy, heavy-lidded eyes that you never want to get when you're driving on the road. Luckily I am in the big, bright Auckland public library where they are so kind as to give you a 30-day membership without questioning your origins or whereabouts-to-be. They are almost as nice as the customs officials who let me enter the country today even though I had no evidence of a return ticket! I got escorted to a special waiting zone while they looked up my records. Silly me, I was more concerned with whether or not I should declare the almonds and dried fruit I had in my backpack. All was resolveded, however, and I was sent on my way with nothing but a gentle reminder that I either needed to leave the country ... read more

For Avery's birthday, we bought her a ticket to see Linkin Park in concert in Auckland. Avery was planning on going with a friend (Vicki) and her chaperone and fellow Linkin Park fan, Victor. I thought I would tag along. As with any major trip, we first headed over the hill to Christchurch. Both Avery and Vicki were quite nauseated and we had to pull over a couple of times to avoid an "in-car" incident. While I am sure that my driving is partly to blame, the high centre of gravity on the Land Cruiser isn't helping. After a quick meal we caught Hair Spray at the movie theatre. It was a surprisingly good and almost perfectly cast movie. John Travolta's performance as Edna Turnblad was spectacular (particularly in the scene where he is dancing with ... read more

So yesterday after writing in this i spent the whole day walking around Aukland going from park to coffee shop. It was cool and stress-free. I was gonna go see Napalm death play at a pub, but about 4 the tirdness hit and i felt very very fragile and kinda sick. I couldnt face 3 hours of grind-core, but i didnt want to go to bed ridiculously early, so went to see a play. Didn't know anything about it, other than it had won some awards and was funny. I just needed to relax and let something light wash over me. It was about murder and child torture, ha bloody ha. But it was good. Woke up at 3. Took me 20min to work out if it was 3am or 3pm. Turned out it was in ... read more

We've had one wet and one dry day here in Auckland. Yesterday we went up the Sky Tower, the tallest building in the Southern hemishpere, which we can see from the window of the YHA. It's a great way to see the city if you don't have long to look around it. We watched people doing skydiving from the tower, Catherine thinks she'd like to do it, but the rest of us were happy to drink coffee and watch others. We got our moneys worth out of our visit to the Maritime museum, in fact we returned today to see more of the galleries and exhibits. On our way to Auckland we had a sociable couple of days visiting friends or relatives of friends and receiving excellent kiwi hospitality in both Tauranga and Whiritoa beach. Tomorrow ... read more
