Sunset from our ferry ride - May 11th
We are in New Zealand! It only took us six days to get here. Our first impression of Auckland is lovely. It is a busy city but hilly and green. There was a lot of traffic leaving the airport and getting to our hotel, which is right in the heart of the city, but the timing couldn't have been worse - rush hour. Luckily, we were able to leave our luggage at the airport and just take an overnight bag. The kids weren't feeling so great. The boys both had ear infections, but we forced everyone out of the hotel after a quick cup of tea/hot chocolate and a brief rest. Since it was late in the afternoon already, and we were only going to get one evening in Auckland, we headed down to the water to take a ferry over to Devonport for dinner, get a view of the city, and watch the sunset. We found a cute place to eat - pumpkin seems to be a very popular menu item - with something for everyone. We were still battling the major time change and wanting to fall asleep at 7pm and get up at 4-5 am. We struggled to

stay out, with the help of some yummy Gelato at the wharf, until 8pm. It is fun to wander around a new city and notice the differences and the similarities. Syd and I were surprised to see one of our favorite stores, LUSH.
We left the hotel early to get to Gregg's interview. The rest of us just waited in the cab and bugged the driver with lots of questions. We were given an interesting overview of the political situation in NZ through the eyes of an emigrant from Tongo. New Zealand will also hold national elections this November.
The final photo is our first view of the South Island after changing planes in Wellington. Speaking of Wellington, it is the capital of New Zealand, and looks lovely. It is situated on several hills along the bay and channel between the North and South Islands. This a city I want to come back and visit.
Timaru here we come!
