Samedi, ce ... read more

We spent the evening strolling around Darling Harbour stopping there for drinks and a very nice tasty meal at The Meat & Wine restaurant. BBQ spare ribs – it made a great change after 50 nights of food on the ship. Really like the feel of Sydney but just a shame we were too shattered to continue into the early hours! The 6am start wasn’t conducive to hunting out the nightclubs. On our second day we had planned to go into the Blue Mountains but couldn’t face another crack of sparrows start and a troll around on a Cunard bus so decided to leave this until we come back to Australia. Instead we had another exploration of Sydney itself and took a ride on the monorail. We visited China Town and went to Paddy’s market which ... read more

Welcome We are on official countdown to our big trip that you all have been hearing about for what seems like forever to us. Hopefully you received an invite (still not totally sure how all of this works)...accept the invitation if you would like to receive our updates as we travel the Islands, and don't worry about it if you don't; we won't take it personally. Right now we are scheduled to leave on March 9, around 7PM from San Francisco, and land in New Zealand 13 hours later (ugh) on friday morning the 11th. Well looks like our trip is coming to an end as we are now on our very last week :-( . However we are very excited about coming home to see everyone and I have already looked at the price of the South America lonley planet! Our time in NZ has been incredibly busy but we have really enjoyed it. We started off spending a few days in Christchurch getting our bearings. We went to see the buskers festival which was interesting and then went off for a swim in the local swimming pool. We also took a stroll through the city to see the damage the earthquake had caused and managed to find a local brewery. We also went to the art gallery much to James' moaning. It was then the start of our journey ... read more

Wednesday 15th December 2010 (Christchurch – Auckland) We arranged a later check out with reception so that we could catch up on some of our disturbed sleep , then spent the afternoon updating our blog in the hotel before going to the airport for our flight to Auckland. The check-in process was seamless, with automation every step of the way... after an hour we arrived and made our way to our airport hotel where we enjoyed a swim and sauna before dinner in bed. ... read more

I Arrived in Auckland on 8th November 2010 and although very tired and disorientated, I was very excited and eager to start how I meant to go on and enjoy every minute of my year in New Zealand. My first views of this magnificent country were from the windows of the plane as we came in to land at Auckland Airport as me, all of my new friends and many of the other people on the plane craned our necks to get a good look. What we saw was beautiful and I couldn't wait to see more. As it turned out I didn't have long to wait as the guy picking us up from the airport and taking us to ACB Base hostel decided to take us on a short tour of the city including the ... read more

A heavy rain overnight settles into a drizzle for our morning stroll to breakfast. Finding a café we enjoy porridge and French toast (covered with fruit) and then try to get our airplane boarding passes at the Air New Zealand office. No such luck but we do get our seat reservations. Passing the WWI Memorial Arch I notice the “Service Above Self” motto prominently displayed and wonder if Rotary International borrowed theirs from this poignant statement. Returning to the hotel our driver picks us up on schedule for the short run to the airport. Checking in is painless at the kiosk where we get boarding passes, bag tags and a kind staffer to assist us. Security is marvelously relaxed without the hassle of our TSA Gestapo and with smiles and kind words to assist. No shoes ... read more

I had lots of fun at the St Jerome's Laneway Festival in Auckland on Monday 31st January. The 31st of January is 'Auckland Anniversary Day' so the council holds a fireworks display and people can take a day off work. The Laneway Festival is an outdoor festival that is held in Aotea Square which is the main meeting point in Auckland's Central Business District. We thought it was going to rain, but luckily for my papery self it was sunny and warm for most of the day. Many of the bands performing at the festival had traveled long distances, from the United States, Canada, England and many more places. The festival attracts thousands of people each year. Most of the bands play alternative rock music, which consists mainly of guitarists, a drummer and a keyboard player ... read more

Wednesday 17th November 2010 Lost to International Date Line – Rubbish! Thursday 18th November 2010 (Auckland) Joanne hadn’t slept a wink on what we had hoped would be a smooth night flight with a seamless transition into a new time zone (although Video on Demand didn’t help!), so at 5am the top of our wish list was a hostel that would allow an early check in for a quick cat nap and refreshing shower before starting our day. Base (ACB) were less than useless – we even offered to pay for the previous night but the receptionist stated the cash tills were closed. We checked out Quality Backpackers over the road, and even though the double room was barely larger than the bed and it was a bit pricey, they did let us check in immediately ... read more

After a few wet and windy days still in Auckland. With not a lot else to do. i've turned my efforts to searching for a car or van. The easiest and most straight forward way i ended up doing it was at the backpackers car market. I have never bought a car on my own before. The people there were pretty helpful. they gave me some good advise. I ended up going for a estate, station wagon as they call them over here. I pick it up tomorrow, and then i'm off out of Auckland. Just hoping the weathers going to stay good! Not sure what route to take? Whether to go straight down to the south island, and do a kind of figure of 8? Or go north from Auckland, then back down the west ... read more
