Today is the big game!!! Canada versus New Zealand in the Rugby world cup!!! I met a guy in my room who was also from Canada and Pete invited him to come down to the fanzone on the waterfront with us to watch the game. I bought a Canada hockey jersey in Australia at the Queen Vic Market for Pete’s birthday but just had to wear it on this occasion first! There were heaps of Canadians around which was awesome. The fanzone they have set up is huge and has heaps of big screen tvs to watch the games. The weather didn’t cooperate and was raining of course. So everyone crammed into the two buildings they have set up. It’s a cool set up. Had a couple of beers and got into watching the game with ... read more

Well, it has been a crazy first week but thought I would update a couple of days at a time. Apologies for the lack of updates as we have had very little downtime in which to sit down and put pen to paper (or text to screen). Well after my cousin's 30th in Brisbane on the Friday night, the trip was off to a great start with a 9am flight out of Brisbane. Getting into Auckland it was evident how many fans were here from all countries with hundreds of French fans all decked out on their way to their game that afternoon. There also fans from every other country just showing their colours as they made their way around the city. For the first 3 days we were staying at the Base Backpackers right on ... read more

The last time the Rugby World Cup came to New Zealand I was at school, and was completely caught up in the excitement. I became a walking encyclopedia of all things rugby, and was even lucky enough to go to one of the games with my father and brothers. This time, the build up seemed to go on for ever, and about three weeks ago I thought I was over it before it began. But then finally it was game week, and the atmosphere and excitement in Auckland was catching. By Friday I was completely caught up in it again. Auckland welcomed the world with a stunningly beautiful day - no clouds, no wind, just a gorgeous sunny spring day. There was real buzz in the city which had been building all week. This party was ... read more

Lie Wei and I had to go down to Auckland to pick up a secondhand car we were going to purchase from Eva's co-worker. Since it was the weekend of the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony, we decide to try to attend it. We found out our housemate, Allen was going to go back to Auckland (his hometown) for the weekend as well so we decide to hitch a ride with him. The unfortunate thing was that he wanted to leave at 5.15pm and on that day itself, it had to be the longest pack day we have ever encountered since we started working. In the end, we completed work at 5.10pm and from then on it was a mad rush to get back and in time to meet Allen. Eventually we managed to make it ... read more

So we are still in Auckland, at the same house, even though we intended to leave Monday. Auckland has stolen our hearts! Really though, we just love the people we are couch surfing with. They let us use their internet, do laundry, and drive us to all the cool sights (did you know Auckland has 53 inactive volcanoes?!). Now our plan is to stay until Sunday, as one of our housemates' (nickname Baby Cat) birthday is this weekend and we want to celebrate with her! In the meantime we have been exploring the city and making our plans for the rest of our trip. I have started reading a book titled "Vagabonding: an uncommon guide to the art of long-term world travel" and 10 pages in am already hooked. The quote that spoke to me today: ... read more

Auckland is New Zealand's largest and most populated city but then even when I toured it's streets, it doesn't seem to be very much of a city like New York or Hong Kong. There is not very many people. Even when Lie Wei, Lie Yee and a bunch of my travel mates decided to go walk down one of Auckland's most happening streets, Ponsonby Road, you don't get to see throngs of people partying or dining out like say Bangsar in KL. Instead, you see a smattering of bars and restaurants here and there. This city feels so different. While staying with Eva, her son (and my nephew) Aaron brought me to Mt Eden. It was formerly a volcano that collapsed onto itself creating a large crater at the top of the hill. It's a relatively ... read more

Kia Ora! After 48 hours of traveling madness, my sister, Taylor, and I made it to our first couchsurfing stop in Auckland. Of our 5 flights over here, 4 were delayed, but somehow we ended up landing only 15 minutes later than expected. The biggest bump in the road, however was in LA, where we were told we couldn't go to New Zealand without return tickets or an itinerary proving we were eventually leaving the country. Like something out of the Amazing Race, we found a computer and booked tickets from Auckland to Sydney for a total of $308 in under 15 minutes. Charlie Sheen calls that winning. We also got to spend 5 hours on the beach in Fiji, collecting shells and enjoying a beautiful sunrise. Movies and people-watching kept us highly entertained on the ... read more

I finally landed in Auckland after a 9.5-hour flight from Singapore. In total, my travel time was around 14.5 hours after transit time and connecting flight, which is still much shorter than travel to US. I had a pretty restless sleep on board the plane. I slept right after dinner but I kept waking up a lot throughout the night. The dude in front of me had some issues with his seat (or what?) but he moved back to sit with me from time to time. Airplane food was okay... Jetstar has a lot of Japanese flight attendants. I am now in the Auckland Public library. So far, I have opened a bank account (have to make appointment to do so), applied for a tax number, bought a backpackers card and am now trying to decide ... read more
