Wednesday 29th We catch the 6.30am bus to the airport and all goes smoothly and we fly to Sydney. We change terminals and go to book in with Air Pacific for our onward flight to Fiji. We then find that there’s a problem. Our Agent hasn’t issued us any tickets for the flight and they won’t let us on ! After a lot of talking they agree to sell us new tickets to Fiji and then on to New Zealand. We have to pay again for the flights and hope our Agent refunds the cost, I’m not hopeful. Finally we take off and say goodbye to Australia after four wonderful months. The plane’s new but it seems the airline spent all their money on it as the in flight meal is a chicken burger and two ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands » Nanuya Island January 4th 2014

Wishing all our friends relatives and assorted readers a very Happy New Year from fabulous Fiji. This is the most fabulous place and very relaxing after 7 weeks 'on the road'. Started with 4 days at Yawa island in the western Yasawa chain. That was a lovely place with a beach side Bure, from which the pacific virtually lapped our toes. Spent our time fishing (unsuccessfully), eating fish that someone else caught, swimming, snorkeling over the coral, lying in a hammock with a beer, and generally working hard doing nothing! Needless to say, Shirley is very happy..got her sun, heat (33) and sea,, and we stay in the same place for 4 whole days! Got cramp snorkeling on 1st day, and struggled to get out of a rip with only one leg working, so got dragged ... read more

We had a wonderful stop two days ago on the island of Druvani, Fiji. Only 150 people, white sand beaches and a wonderful warm, clear blue-green water day. We just tendered ashore, had a stroll around in the morning and then went back to the ship for lunch. In the afternoon, we returned to buy some of very special forks they used to use on very special dinners (think Alferd Packer) and found some. We'll see if we have problems getting them back home though - Australia and New Zealand are very stringent in their rules on bringing organic material into their countries, so we have to have them vetted on the ship. Hope it works. Anyway, also had a tour of the little three-room school and a wonderful talk with the kindergarten teacher. The kids ... read more

Bula Bula, Bula Bula Bula - that's Fijian for...well, anything you want it to be really! - They seem to say it at any and every occasion possible The first long stop of my trip by myself had arrived - I had a week to spend in Fiji before crossing the dateline and making my way back home, and it was time for relaxation! Unfortunately the weather decided it didn't want to let me enjoy Fiji at its best, and gave me only 3 of 7 days with nice weather, but I made the most of them Arriving at the airport I was collected by the owners of the hostel I was staying in, before eventually getting to my huge room! Paying just £25 a night, I had my own room with three beds, on a ... read more

Hi all still here. Managing to get out each day for at least one snorkel. Have also done one of the nature walks for a few hours. last night went to a Mele night (I think that is correct) at a local resort. Great food. Also have some neighbours for the past couple of days in villa. There at only the two accommodation units here so is very quiet. Just thinking about what we are going to do today. May go into the township or for a walk, or for a snorkel, Terry has just said the tide is really low so we could just about walk out to the second reef without getting our feet wet. Might have to try that. ... read more

Yet another day of relaxation, yesterday we spent several hoJustin the waters unfortunately ended up a little like a lobster. It is extremely relaxing here much like the old kiwi holiday were. Yesterday we went into the township to get supplies for a couple of days. Thanks for the text from work, sorry I was not available for teaching much better things to do - see photos. In the afternoon we tried the swimming hole quiet amazing the first foot is warm then quite cold I think there is fresh water under the salt water which never drains. Then we went snorkelling - there is an unusual feature here were there is one shallow reef which almost dries at low tide and a second deep water reef so we went to the second reef to see what it was like. There was a bit of current but it was better than many dives I've been on - no photos from here yet. Today as it was high tide ... read more

Have made it to Savusavu after overnighting in Nadi. It was a really early start so really aren't going to do anything today. Wee had to fly through Suva with quite a long wait. have managed a quick walk along the beach to find the swimming hole which looks fantastic. It is a area of deep water within the reef. Will investigate later. Just going to kick back for a bit before we get out and about. In the mean time take a look out "our" beach.... read more

Arrived in Suva at 7.00a.m. - had a leisurely breakfast and decided to just walk around the town itself - after all the amazing places we have been Suva was a little uninspiring - but the weather was a lovely breezy 24 so perfect for a long walk. Walked about 7kms along the beachfront past Albert Park, their big sporting ground, Thurston Gardens which is a very nice botanical park lush with flowering plants, shady trees and lily ponds. Overlooking these gardens is the Government Houses which is a very grand looking mansion - over the top when you see the basic homes people have to live in around the place - sadly lacking TLC, many beggars and the beaches close to town were strewn with endless rubbish, plastic bags and bottles. People very friendly and ... read more
