I left San Francisco at 3pm thinking my flight was at 18.50 but i got put on the earier 4pm flight to LA then a 3hr connecting flight over to Fiji. I left at 9pm LA time on 20th feb and arrived at 6am on 22nd in Nadi having crossed the international date line. Fiji is one of the closest countries to the date line meaning that it is one of the earliest place of daybreak in the world. This made me think that as I saw the sunrise on Monday i would be one of the first people on the planet to welcome in this new day. Back in England this would not be seen for another 13hrs! I got a shuttle bus to my hotel, which is on the same bay as the airport ... read more

It was an early start flying out of Sydney and we had a long day ahead of us. Our flight was at 7am which meant leaving the hotel at 5am. It was a 3 hour flight from Sydney to Auckland; a 4 hour wait in Auckland for our connecting flight and then a further 3 hour flight to Nadi, Fiji. We landed at 6.30pm (Fijian time - 2 hours ahead of Sydney) which means we are now 11 hours ahead of South Africa and 13 hours ahead of UK time - very confusing, i know. The flights all in all went well. We flew with Air New Zealand and there was enough time to squeeze in a movie in both flights. The lady, who owned the house in which we would be staying, had arranged someone ... read more

Bula Everyone! 153 days have passed and we have visited 63 destinations in 11 countries, travelled on 24 planes, 5 trains, 9 buses, 7 boats, hired 11 cars and had the best five months of our lives. The trip has taken us to some of the world’s wonders and we have been lucky enough to experience many cultures and meet a lot of great people on our travels. Our last week was exactly what we planned: seven days in paradise with nothing to do but relax. Fiji is made up of 300 islands scattered across 20,000 square miles and is a stunning country. Some of you may remember the ITV programme ‘Celebrity Love Island’ (a reality show where z-list celebs are sent to an exotic island for a few weeks) which was filmed at the resort ... read more

Bula! :-) Arriving in Fiji on the Tuesday evening, we were greeted by the driver that the hotel had arranged for us. The journey would take an hour and a half with nothing more than a few villages between Nadi and Sigatoka where we would be staying. Having been to Ko Samui and Phuket we expected it to be similar but it was quite different. There was very little to be seen in the way of tourist shops, cafes and fast food places. It seems that although there are signs of development for hotels and houses along the road, the Fijians have managed to keep their paradise island exactly that. There are masses of fields growing sugar cane along the road and occasionally you would smell the burning where they had cut it down and see ... read more

The local bus dropped us off at 7pm and we had to walk down a pitch black lane for 10 minutes until we found the resort, the security guard welcomed us and feeling sorry that we had to walk in the dark, he gave us a bowl of kava and showed us to our room! The next day we booked ourselves on a fishing and island trip, about 10 of us crowded on to this small boat and went off in search of fish and hopefully sun. After about an hour of smashing along the waves and needing to see a specialist about our new back problems, we reached the island with 2 tunas in hand, and whilst the hosts cooked them, we went snorkelling and played a bit of football. After lunch we went to ... read more

So we are back home safe and sound. Fiji was Amazing! blue blue waters, coco nut filled palm trees and tons of adventures to be had. I would have updated the blog earlier, but the islands were very simple, and had no such luxuries as internet or hot water :P Throughout the week "fijitime" we managed to visit 4 small islands. the main island Nadi, corovue, coralview and bounty. Nadi is the main island. Most of the population lives there. its the main Hub for all the islands. This is where we first landed, in the blanket of the night, the first Backpackers was very nice, people just lounging by the TV in the common area, and if you walked a little further you are greeted by the white, soft sandy beaches and rolling waves that ... read more

The whole reason we went to the south coast of the country was to do this world famous shark dive of the coast of the island of Beqa (pronounced Ben-ga). We arrived the day before on the bus, which was pretty good value for money at fj$3 (1 pound) to get us to the other side of the country. Since it was a Sunday we had to wait for the bus for about an hour. We stood by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere & witnessed how Fiji gets its reputation for being one of the friendliest countries in the world. Every car, almost with out exception, flashed their lights, beeped or waved at us shouting "BULA!" as they went. It was a lovely touch which made me feel less like a ... read more

It is our last day in Fiji, we have now been travelling since last September, I know a bit late to be starting a blog, but I have to confess that this is not the start, I just thought I would add a post a summary of each destination we visit to a travel dedicated site. Those of you who are interested in my Blog can find the full blog, a day by day account of our journey at www.travelswithbaggage.blogspot.com. I will start with this summary record at Fiji, not the start of our trip, but where I happen to be sat at the moment waiting for our flight to Hawaii. You can also get a different perspective on our trip if you look at my daughter's website, www.beingbaggage.com, where she keeps a video diary and ... read more

The schools were all on half term for the next to weeks, so instead of going to school to coach we held coaching courses in a local field/ pitch. So for the next 2 weeks we were doing coaching 10til11 then wed go home for an hour break have some lunch etc then head back for a second session 12til1! The first week was quite good we had about 10/ 15 kids turn up most days so we tended to split them into footbal and rugby (these were the most popular options!). Some days we just concentrated on one of the 2 so some days me and lucy were learning with the kids how to play rugby etc! . Ive come to the conclusion this isnt my sport! These sessions usually ended (to the kids disgust ... read more

We found our madventurer people and then short van ride to our house. You always know its going to be a good journey when the van has a monkey for a gear stick ( that is a very weird sentence!) . Aman is the van driver,we were in amans van (it never gets boring) he drives us to coaching, eds bar etc and ... read more
