Six years ago, I was dreaming of travel. I'd just finished university and all I wanted to do was see the world. To feed that interest, I constantly read different travel books. One of these books was a woman's stories of travel, much of it on the island of Taveuni, in Fiji. For whatever reason, it was reading about that remote island on the other side of the globe that it sunk in just how big the world is and that I'd never get to see all of it. Taveuni would be one of those places. Then, in the next month, I read two other books - both anthologies, so I had no way of knowing the places in the pages. Both of them also had stories of Taveuni. Taveuni then became the random, obscure speck ... read more

Another blog within a week? We must have too much time on our hands! Seeing as we've got a couple of days left in Nadi, with very little to occupy us except sunbathe, I thought I'd leave Clio on the beach and come inside to write about our Feejee Experience. The 'Feejee Experience' is very similar to the Magic Bus, in that it provides travellers with a flexible bus service around a country, taking you to both the popular areas, as well as places off the beaten track. The thing that attracted us the most was all the activities included in the ticket price, hopefully creating a fun few days of culture, Fiji style. It was definitely an experience! We started on a Monday morning, from our resort. The FJE (for short) vehicle, is a 15 ... read more

Hello lovely people, So we have left it a very long time since we wrote the blog, for that we are sorry. However we have been very busy, having far too much fun and running out of money for the internet. We are in Fiji now, it's lovely, however raining today so a perfect time to say hello. New Zealand was AWESOME/SWEET AS and all those other Kiwiana words. We last wrote to you from Queenstown. We got snowed in on the day we were meant to leave, annoying but made for some very pretty pictures. We will just give you a round up of the rest of our time in NZ, as the pictures will tell a better story, and show how amazing it is. Our last stop in the South Islands was Kaikora which ... read more

We made it to Fiji for our honeymoon adventure! It was quite an adventure—an hour flight from Raleigh to DC, a 2-hour layover, 5 hours to LA, a 3-hour layover, then 10.5 hours to Nadi, Fiji (with a dose of Ambien to help get through that flight). We were then picked up by a driver in an older, black Mercedes and driven 2.5 hours to the south side of the island. By that time it was 10am Fiji time, and we were supposed to be met by a boat to get us to the first island where we are staying, but we were told the water was too choppy for a small boat, and all 3 of the big boats were out on dive trips. So the driver dropped us at a resort called The Pearl, ... read more

We flew into Fiji from Christchurch and were hit with a wave of heat - nice, as we were getting pretty cold in New Zealand! It was a lot like you would imagine it to be, palm trees and people in flowery tops singing with guitars etc. We thought there were also some similarities to Asia, however, in that some of it was quite undeveloped (eg the supermarkets had their own cockroach population!) Everyone was really friendly and shouted BULA all the time (even out of cars and across the road at you) which is a greeting. We spent a night in Nadi near the airport in a hostel which was almost like someone's house, where they made us dinner and we played with their kittens! The next day we took a bus to the Coral ... read more

I flew to Fiji aboard an Air Pacific flight where I had a great feed of lamb goulash, fruit salad and profiteroles with custard, which was delicious and the best plane food I have ever tasted. On arrival to Nadi airport there was a couple of men playing guitars and singing, I was met by a Fiji experience representative and given a shell necklace. We were then transported to smugglers cove resort. As part of my tour I had a free nights accommodation there. I checked in and handed over my voucher, but Fiji experience had forgotten to book me in so smugglers cove gave me a free upgrade which was pretty good as I wasn't paying for the night anyway, I got to stay in the hotel section of the resort in my own private ... read more

Hi to anyone who has been reading my travel blog. I stopped writing in 2007 but I didn't really stop travelling. So I've just decided to go back over the last two years and retrospectively write about my travels. It'll take a while but I think it will be fun to think and write about places I've been the last 24 months...... read more

During the one hour drive from the airport to our home for the 1st week here, we realised quickly that Fiji is a very poor country. We drove through small villages, where the houses were constructed from corrugated iron sheets as walls, precariously propping each other up, with a few planks of wood at odd angles offering dubious extra support. Most homesteads have a tethered animal, usually a single cow, goat or horse and a small area of untended wild grass surrounding it . All have a washing line, usually strung between a fence post and tree, and hanging with the family's laundry including net curtains and sheets (I have since learned that the net curtains screen the myriad of insects in these parts) I suspect that the laundry is done by hand as washing machines are ... read more

... read more

BULA! We arrived in Nadi International on the mainland Fiji, 6th March at 6:00am. We had a short transfer to the Hostel, which was more like a hotel than a hostel with two pools and two restaurants, a movie room and games room. We quickly felt at home! As we started early we lazed around in the sunshine by the pool. After recovering from some jet lag, we lost the 5th of march, it never happened, we had dinner in the restaurant which was really good food and cheap. We re-packed leaving some heavier thicker clothing at the hostel on the mainland. Our island hopping adventure started at 6:30am; after breakfast we jumped aboard the window less bus to take us to the marina. Denarau port was very pleasant with a golf course winding between the ... read more
