Our Air Pacific flight was good; the warm and friendly staff wear bright floral 'Fiji' uniforms and we even got dinner on our 5 hour flight! We stepped off the plane at 5am to a 'Bula welcome' with a band in floral shirts... Hello Paradise! Even though we were very early for check-in the hotel staff (Bedarra Beach Inn) poured us a welcome drink, popped a flower in our hair and had the room ready for us by 10. After a quick snooze we headed out to the beach. Horses roam up and down the beach (horse-rides too) and when the tide goes out you can walk out to the reef! We had a quick swim in the pool, followed by a happy hour cocktail (again being serenaded by a Fijian band), watched the sunset go ... read more

Arriving in Fiji was everything you'd expect and more from a pacific island getaway; the blast of tropical humidity that hit us in the face as soon as the cabin doors of the Boeing 737 swung open, the welcoming upbeat tunes of the band in the terminal who were sporting the traditional shirts with colourful wreath garments and the lovely smiling customs lady who sympathised with our unfortunate New Zealand robbery and then blessed us both to have a great stay in Fiji. Now that’s what I call a welcome! After picking up our bags and surf board we were met in the arrivals area by Harry our eccentric taxi driver who would take us on the two hour journey down the coast from the main town of Nadi to ‘The Beach House’ resort in the ... read more

Geo: -17.8, 177.42We are working our adaptability muscles. Every time we drop into a new city or country with new surroundings, climate, currency, perhaps language and if not language an accent or habits that are unfamiliar it requires us to let go of what we are comfortable with and embrace the new. Each time I can feel my mind, body and soul aching for the more familiar then settling into the excitement and challenge of another place. It's all good. In fact I really dislike it when I am feeling stuck or too attached; it is a sign to change things up. After our first 10 hours of travel, we arrived in LA with the intention of rendezvousing with my brother. Without any cell phone or access to internet and having sent him only our itinerary ... read more

Bula, a word used by every person, regardless of where they originate, workers along the waterfront, hotel guests and screaming school children. Meaning hello, it's the main Fijian word used where most people's mother tongue is English. And boy did we hear it hundreds of times daily. Despite the fact we went nowhere! Our flight from Auckland was a good one, fairly good breakfast on the early morning three hour flight where although we advanced, we went back in time an hour (Fiji do not have spring daylight saving for its always sunny*.) We were greeted by a man wearing a skirt (completely normal) playing a banjo singing in Fijian folk (even more normal), we got through customs fine and although many staff wanted us to take a taxi we got the public bus, success. Although ... read more

A WEEK IN FIJI Alex: After all the activities in New Zealand it has been lovely to get some rest and just chill in Fiji. The Anchorage Beach resort was more luxurious than the cost justified with a huge comfortable room with easy access to the pool and beach. George and Ruby met an Australian boy called Fisher, and spent several days exploring the beach mangrove swamps with him and playing in the pool. They got on so well, and we hardly saw them for hours on end, it was great! We got to read and swim, and chat with Fisher’s mother Misha and her friend Lucinta. In the evenings there was usually entertainment laid on, usually in the form of the house band playing cheesy classics. I had a few Fiji Bitters which disappointingly turned ... read more

This instalment of our blog is dedicated to the memory of Edna Rosina Beaken who died this month and who's funeral is taking place in Sheffield today. She was nearly 90 and she was Carla's Gran. She was an intrepid traveller. Alex: On Tuesday morning I arrived at the offices of the Glacier Guides company wearing about 5 layers so that I wouldn’t be cold. Our guide was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and suggested that I might want to leave a couple of layers behind as it wasn’t going to be all that cold on there. I had been expecting to walk up onto the glacier, as that was the advertised trip on their website, so was happily surprised when I was told to walk around to the heliport to wait for the helicopter ride ... read more

Merry Christmas to all of you from our little family. This year, we are spending Christmas and New Year in Fiji, a first for the four of us. This is the first entry of a serie of three. Our first stop is in “Aussie land” on Denarau Island. We are spending our first five nights at the Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island. Denarau Island is nothing else than a “fantasy island” built to please the Australian and New Zealand markets. This little place hold few villas, two Sheratons, one Westin, one Radisson, one Sofitel and a Hilton. The facilities also include Port Denarau, a small shopping center catering for tourists full of restaurants and bars. To make sure you don’t even think of leaving the place, they have add-up a nice “tourists” golf course right ... read more

Bula Bula everyone! In my last update I’d just arrived in Fiji at 5.30am…so let me tell you what I got up to whilst I was there… well, what I can tell you of what we got up to…what goes on at The Beachouse stays at the The Beachouse… ;) FIJI – Thursday 17th November 2011 I’d lost a day on the plane. I left Los Angeles at 9.30pm on Tuesday 15th November 2011 and after a 10 or so hour flight arrived in Fiji on Thursday 17th November 2011. Bit random. As I’d managed to sleep so much on the plane it was just like having a night’s sleep and I didn’t feel too much of the jet lag. We entered Nadi airport to the sounds of singing, a lovely local band was playing for ... read more

We arrived in Fiji late afternoon on Thursday and were greeted at the airport by many very friendly Fijians and each got a shell necklace! After a rather long transfer we arrived at our hotel late evening and as we arrived, 3 Fijian men played their guitars and sang a nice welcome song for us!! We were shown to our rooms and had our cases carried up to our rooms too. We had our tea in the hotel restaurant which was lovely and then after our usual card game of nomination trumps, we got some well needed sleep. Friday turned out to be a rather cloudy day so we paid for a tour around parts of Fiji. Our taxi driver was called Alvin (Alveen) and loved the fact their was a film called Alvin and the ... read more
