Geo: -17.61, 177.45With the Melanesian Championships finished and Fletcher's course complete we had one day where we could just be tourists. Fletcher had made sure we could have a night to go to First Landing, a resort just north of Nadi on the road to Lautoka.. He had been there several times before and wanted to take me to dinner there. Last week we decided to stay there too so I went online and booked the last available roo, Tis happened to be a Villa which originally was priced at $236. Though that was more expensive than we would usually pay the description of the place told me there were two King sized beds, a living roo and kitchen. So I thought it was worth it. It turned out that the price quoted was in US ... read more

During this weekend we managed to get to Pacific Harbour for the weekend and stay there. The cyclone hadn’t hit the place too bad, although one of the resorts had damaged bures. Here we managed to do a dive to see sharks, such as bull, lemon and tawny nurse sharks. It was interesting to get back to Suva which took over 2 hours before we had even left. Bus after bus flew past us as they were all full, resulting in us having to get a the 45 minute ride back on a taxi to Suva. Earlier that week we decided to head to the rainforest outside Suva. There are some nice treks and rope swing to go and swing into a water pool. Since the schools were still closed, a lot of school kids were ... read more

Geo: -18.13, 178.43Ahh. Another night with an extra hour of sleep. It's so nice but someday it will all go back. It's 6:30am and time to get up. Actually, I'm up at 6 because it's light outside and I start downloading pictures and text to the Travelpod website. I get part of it done before it stops working so I exit quickly to avoid burning up my limited internet time I have left. I had hoped to send off two or three of the days I've completed this morning but it's not happening. We're docking at the pier in Suva at 8am so it's another light breakfast and we head down to the gangway. They clear the ship for disembarkation just as we get there so we have our IDs scanned and exit. Our drivers are ... read more

5th May - and onto the other side of the world, New Zealand, for a season of exploration in Fiji. When having a Mid-Life Cruise you may as well misadventure and the Yasawa Islands, Vsnua Levi, Taveuni and the Mamanucca's are just the places for it. I'm joining David aboard S/V Rewa in Whangarei. We met in Balboa, Panama in March of last year before sailing to the South Pacific. I was aboard Dances with Dragons with my friend Wayne Harris, aboard a 58' Camper and Nicholson hailing from Houston. David and I are sailors, divers and world travellers. He's from Maine, I'm from England and neither of us like cold climates, especially those continuous grey skies which loom for months at a time. We are tropic birds who chose to bask in warmth. Arrived in ... read more

Well, my welsh mate Mark was on his way to join me in Fiji. What did he want to do? I knew he wanted to buy his own yacht but had he any in mind and where were they. Did he want to go directly to Suva or the western division (Nadi and Lautoka)? Today is arrival day and I was sitting in the bar across the road from the Copra Shed keeping an eye out for the Welshman. Mark said he was flying into Labassa and then catching the bus south to Savusavu. I was expecting him from mid morning on and suspected that he would have a pile of gear. Yep that guy walking with lots of stuff busily talking to the other palangi was Mark. I was right about the gear, four bags ... read more

Australia; a country which, for two months, had shown us an immense level of impressive beauty, a great deal of fun and a much different way of travelling to the first three months of the trip. I have spoken more than once about expectations and I think perhaps the biggest of all of these is that of "travelling" as a generalised term. Not just your own expectation but the expectations of the people standing outside and looking in; the friends and family conducting everyday life as normal or the ex-colleagues left behind in the jobs that you were once a part of. In all honesty, South East Asia probably conforms in the most idealistic ways, to the mass visions of "travelling"- those images of riding on silhouetted elephants against a backdrop of longtail boats and burnt ... read more

Today we decided to stop off at Natadola beach on our way back up to Nadi. It's a spectacular beach that runs along a half moon bay. The waves are pretty big and slam against the beach in quite a scary fashion. I really wanted to do the horse-riding here and after some persuasion from Joe and his horse Snow White, I took to the saddle. I'd say Snow White was 14.2h and a slim build (gentle on the thighs), she was an albino and had some scarred spots on her face from the sun. We had a nice 40 min walk along the beach with the odd trot when she felt like it. Joe, her owner, kept James occupied with Rugby stories (apparently he played international sevens for Fiji in 2010 - we'll google him ... read more

Unfortunately our day started with me wingeing at James to get a move on for our 8am bus - which meant I disobeyed the rules of Fiji time! After scoffing down our breakfast in 5 mins we jumped on the bus to Navua. We had booked ourselves onto the Jewel of Fiji day tour, which would consist of a trip to a Fijian village and some activities in the Nausori highlands. Our first stop was the village; although still very much a traditional village the grass skirts and 'kava ceremony' was definitely put on for the tourists. The traditional Kava ceremony was very interesting and most of us had a try of the Kava (the root of a vegetable mixed with water). To be honest it tasted like badly brewed herbal tea with a helping of ... read more

Despite being the 'capital' and the largest city in Fiji, Suva is actually pretty small. We started our walking tour down at the harbour by the handicraft market and continued up the main road past the town hall, library and the Olympic swimming pool (size not event). We then headed through the city gardens to the Fiji museum which has a really interesting display of culture and environment. The stories of cannibalism were a little frightening but those days are long gone! Our lunch stop at Guava was delicious (well worth the return after our failed attempt at breakfast - arriving too early!). With our swimming costumes on we headed back to the pool, it was crammed full of local kids and I got some pretty funny stares in my bikini! The weather waited for us ... read more

After a really great sleep we popped our swim stuff on and headed down to the reception to pick up the kayaking gear. Because of the shallow reef you can only kayak at high tide 8-11am to ensure you don't damage any coral. We had a relaxing kayak along the coast, out towards the reef and back to shore again. I was very excited to see that when we'd gotten out of the water the horses had gone for their own little paddle (cue hundreds of photos)! After breakfast we went for our complimentary foot massage at the spa, a nice little touch on Valentines day! We then got the local bus into Sigatoka to visit the Sand Dune National park, unfortunately we'd picked a really bad time of day and the sand was too hot ... read more
