Checked into the YHA last night and spent 4 hours just walking around before crashing out. Woke up at midnight (some guy had his bed taken and he wanted to know who) but I was so gooooone that I woke up at 8am and we both apologized to each other (I kicked him away). At home, my computer has crashed but I hope it’s alright back there. Because I got heaps of (incriminating) photos from the Queensland leg of the Tour of Booty (and somehow I didn’t back them up!), I hope it can be saved. I just don’t want to lose all the photos-they were great times recorded! They really do look after the people on bikes and buses down here. Sydney could learn a thing or two about Brisbane’s and Canberra’s public transport ... read more

At the moment I’m on the Canberra XPL(orer). There are these huge dark bodies of cloud just hanging over Sydney at the moment. They must have caught on that I was down here! All the girls from up north seem extremely pleased at our rolling visit. Robbie and I have finally agreed that we’re going to do this (trip to Queensland) yearly because we LOVE those Queensland girls so much! Libby L in three weeks, Jess in April and Josie maybe kind enough to bring Gina down to town! Josie won “Employer of the Year” at her work and the trip was a ticket to Sydney! I’m still a bit disappointed that Nat has moved back to Sydney-this leg was for her. Teddy is in Kiama as well so double damn. But this will be ... read more

From Hobart, I was headed back to Melbourne with a flight from Launceston. My plan to see Cradle Mountain fell apart when I realised it was the last weekend of school holidays, and all accomodation there was fully booked. When I had initially arrived on Tasmania it was beautiful weather - and looking out onto the rain swept streets of Hobart I could only visualise sunny Launceston. Even though all the weather reports showed it to be poor weather across the entire island, I had faith that the sun was shining in Launceston - and so bought a ticket back there. For once my instincts were right - I arrived and instantly the slightly depressed feelings that had been welling up in Hobart disappeared. It was great.  Due to the previous weeks bad weather, the gently ... read more

When I said I had to bust a move early, I meant 9am early! The second bag picked up a lot of stuff and that made things a lot easier (and Baz, the fat Baztard! How much more weight does he want to put on!). Maybe last time when Robbie and I had to catch the bus to Landsborough, we should have caught it on a weekday. The bus was so easy to catch and there was no missing the stop this time around! The Sunshine Coast cried today (65mm till 9am this morning) and on the train down to Brisbane there was a bit of flash flooding around the place. But the tears of the Sunshine State kinda did flow-we had such a great time up here. From meeting Josie (Gina’s older sister) to Gladys ... read more

I always require 8 hours sleep and I don’t really like anything less and anything more is a bit worrying! The humidity (more than anything) got me up (again) and it was a while before Jess could get up. I’m updating the diary at this time, since there’s nothing better that I can think of doing-well I can’t watch tele…Jess will wake up! Sleep is goooooooooooood! I’m not one to interrupt people’s sleep-for instance, Robbie never got up at 10am like he asked-I think that even though a bit too much sleep is a bit worrying, sleep is goooooood! Besides, Robbie is such a heavy sleeper! ;o) Today, Lib & Jess were taking me out for a bit of op shop shopping down at Maroochydore! And just like last year’s trip, there was the game ... read more

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan is it hot today or what? Hotter than yesterday they think! Not sure but the humidity was sure a killer. Robbie didn’t wake up at 10am like he hoped, but he could turn that 9 hr drive back to Coonabarabran into a 7 hr drag race. I was hoping for some of Jess’ fine ground coffees that I had the last time I was here, but I was greeted with, “Meh-I’m too lazy to make it for you, Johnny*”… The sound of water boiling and the aroma of instant coffee slid into Robbie’s dream world and brought him up. Bearing in mind the big journey he had left, he had to leave early. I think he was planning to drop in on the Ippy girls to get a running report on the casualty rate ... read more

The weather did not improve upon arrival in Hobart, the state capital of Tasmania. The entire time I was there it rained, leaving me feel totally unsure of what to do - I really didn't want to go outside, yet I didn't want to stay in the hostel all day - so I went to my old favourite, another Museum!! It was another good museum, with loads of displays on snakes and spiders, but I've been to far too many - why do they all have free entry?! Hobart itself struck me as a poorer city than those I had already seen. Whether this was due to the fact that there were grey skies and rain rather than sun, I do not know - but the buildingsseemed older and not as well maintained as those inthe other ... read more

Last night Robbie took Gina and Bec out to “Players” with their $1 drinks-shit how could I not go there? Gina had to work from 5.30am so she only had about three hours sleep this morning. The sleep that I got, about the same. I couldn’t help but toss and turn all night, trying to comprehend the knobbishness of myself. But when I woke up, perhaps it could have been in Robbie’s car. Maybe on the couch at Gina’s or in my pants that I changed out of. I had to admit I was super grumpy last night so I apologized to Robbie and Gina, but you’d be pretty annoyed too if you did something so knobbish! I went through all of my clothes thoroughly and nothing turned up. Robbie decided to let me do ... read more

"Hot, rugged, dry, flies, rough, red, deserted, breathtaking, and stunning" are just a few words to describe my trip to the outback. This question was on our feedback form to be filled out at the end of our trip. Picking the hottest month of the year to go into the Northern Territory, was crazy; even locals don't travel to this region of Australia at this time. I spent 6 days traveling from Adelaide (Southern Australia) to Alice Springs (Northern Australia) visiting the Fliders Ranges, Cooper City, Uluru, Kata Kjuta, and Kings Canyon. Now to tell a little bit about my outback adventure... The first day was a lot of traveling and we managed to get a full group consisting of 24 people from all parts of the world and then there was "Bones," our impatient, ... read more

After a week in Sydney of desperately searching for work - ANY WORK, I was offered a free ride to Canberra and decided to accept. Canberra gets a lot of bad reviews from backpackers mostly because of its lack of nightlife but that's not why I'm here so I figured I'd give it a chance. It's the nation's capital for heaven's sake! Gotta see it. On paper Canberra looks very straightforward, convenient, and easy to navigate because it's a planned city based on a series of circles. The sheer scale of the city (it's HUGE) makes it extremely difficult to get around on foot. And it is possible to get a bit lost. It was very hot while I was there and the flies are in abundance and if you want to walk around where all ... read more
