25th Jan After using the net to update the blog we went back to the beach for a swim and spent the afternoon doing ordinary things before heading to Helms Aboretum. This is a reserve planted out with maybee 80 - 100 types of different eucalypt dotted amongst some other W.A. natives. 26th Jan We finally brought ourselves to leave Esperence today and drove to Ravensthorp where we had lunch. The drive in this area goes trough a 'biosphere' a large area of native bushland that the plants and animals can evolve naturally that is Fitzgerald N.P. It is beautiful native bushland that we could not enter into the core of however got great views of the landscape as we were driving. We camped right on the edge of the N.P. at Bremer Bay . We are currently in Singapore waiting for our connecting flight to Perth. So far the journey has gone smoothly. We drugged Liz and Isobel with Puriton so we got a bit of peace and quiet on the plane. They both slept all the way here. Singapore airlines was great with a good selection of movies and games to keep us entertained and the food wasn't bad either. Can't wait to get to Perth to relax in the sun. I'll try and add photos as and when I get acces to tinternet but not promising.... read more

We swapped some books for more books at Elizabeth's bookshop, recycling our guidebooks & had a grand $6 lunch at Govinda's including curry, poppadom, rice, lassi and semolina dessert. Then walked it off at the beautiful Kings Park and Botanic Garden, which has first class views of the city and lots of interesting birdlife (red-wattled honey-creeper, magpie robins, willie wagtails (really) and black swans). Perth tram runs around the park, as well - I mention this because Luke was not happy that it was blatantly not a real tram (it didn't run on tracks or have overhead cables - it was a bus), and also because the driver used his loud speaker to sing "Transformers, Robots in disguise" at us, much to my confusion until I recalled that Luke was wearing his Transformers' T-shirt. For dinner ... read more

Useful tip: if arriving in major Australian city on Australia Day, do phone ahead for accommodation unless you enjoy playing out the "no room at the inn" nativity scene of course. We arrived at Perth airport at 5:40am on Australia Day, a national holiday where 400,000 people would be congregating in the evening for a fireworks display & we hadn't prebooked any accomadation. Actually, we found room at inn four, after deciding inn three was actually in the midst of a building site and, therefore, inaccessible and potentially noisy. Perth and surrounds were fantastic. The riverfront was buzzing the day we arrived-with stunt bikes jumping off ramps, aerobatic flybys, beach volleyball, and a stage with excellent Aussie bands- namely "The Avenues" and "The Panics". As darkness fell, there was an awesome firewor... read more

Perth We spent the Christmas period in Perth, staying in what must be the nicest hostel in the World with a real home from home atmosphere. Slightly more expensive than our normal digs but really well fitted out and a more mature clientele made for a relaxed and welcome treat. The owner threw a Christmas Eve party that most of the residents attended which led to a group of us getting together to spend Christmas day on Cottesloe beach, baking ourselves instead of the turkey (altough we looked like a prize bunch of turkeys the following day - rouge being the colour of choice!). Whilst the ladies sunbathed and elegantly sipped on the vino, the chaps showed the locals a thing or two with a display of true british aquatic sporting prowess - body surfing. Or ... read more

Pre - Departure - Tears, Packing and Anticipation... About 2 years ago I grew on a dream of exploration. To this day that dream has expanded into 1 mass fever; the freedom and joy of discovering places that is different to every day life. For the past 6 months I have given up a lot of social life, and have worked as much as I ever have in my life. For 6 weeks leading into christmas I was averaging 60 + hours a week, all to save up and finance my round the world journey. Where does my journey take me? To countrys that are fairly westernised without a doubt, but heck; thats what interests me, how people in different parts of the world go about there day to day life; how they survive, customs etc. ... read more

Got up early, grabbed a coffee and my favourite creamy fruit yoghurt (only made in australia) and waited at a bus stop for the double decker sightseeing bus. After waiting for some time i enquired with the concierge at the adjacent hotel to find out that both buses had been destroyed in an arson attack some 6 months ago! Just as well i hadn't decided to wait any longer! I ended up getting on a sightseeing tram instead. This went along the beautiful waterfront and gardens to the Burswood Entertainment Complex and Casino, the Perth Mint, Barrack Street Jetty, Swan Bell Tower and then up to Kings Park which had amazing views of the harbour and the city. I had arranged to meet my friend Rhianna there. (I used to live with her in Whister, Canada). ... read more

Arrived into Perth early afternoon after a 10hr flight and although i was pretty shattered, dragged myself down to the bar for a nice cold one. It was a beautiful blue sky day and was really nice chilling out in the sun in front of the hotel watching people coming and going. After a few drinks the cockpit crew and i walked down the road to the Barrack Street Jetty to a bar called the Lucky Shag!! (and as although the name suggests, it didn't quite live up to its name!!) Even so, it was a pretty cool bar right on the water with views of the city. One thing i couldn't get over was the lack of people in this city. Even on the drive from the airport, there were hardly any cars on the ... read more

As the cliches suggest, my travels so far have taught me a number of important truths. Foremost among these (a truth my friends have been aware of for a long time) is that I am a notoriously unreliable correspondent. =P The general trend seems to be that I neglect to write at all for months, before suddenly filling my unsuspecting friends' inboxes with a torrent of detailed travel narrative and photos. Hopefully this travel blog will help remedy all that! Those of you who are interested can check back here every now and then to see what trouble I've gotten myself into lately, as I spend the next year away in Asia. I have no idea how often I will update this - possibly every two or three weeks. Those of you who are really keen ... read more

(Dave writes...) Christmas 2005 will be a memorable one, it being our first Christmas away from home and our first on the beach! On Christmas Eve the hostel, Governor Robinsons (see photo - the nicest hostel we've seen) put on a wine and cheese night. We met quite a few others staying there for Christmas, including two English couples - Matt and Michelle, Grace and Andy, a crazy German girl called Katja and a Mancunian named Dan. Spending Christmas with them really made it for us, it was a great group of people and even if Matt was a Liverpool fan we still got along. Afterwards, we headed off to the pub, and from what I remember it was a great night out! Christmas day we woke up a little groggy and sat in bed, opening ... read more
