For all the pictures from this part of the trip: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2321085&id=16912798&l=e3d2e60f27 After being able to sleep in for 4 days, I had to get up early to leave the lovely town of Broome and head towards Darwin. Our first stop was to see the Prison Boab Tree. It was used as a "prison cell" in the 1890s by the local police to lock up Aboriginal prisoners over night, on their way to Derby for sentencing. Our next stop was Windjana Gorge Nat'l Park. The Napier range is an ancient reef system that was pushed up into mountains. You can still see some coral in the rock. At Windjana Gorge we saw some freshwater crocs! Winjana Gorge was a starting point for an Indigenous man who ended up becoming an outlaw in the eyes of the Europeans. ... read more

20 - 30th July 2009 Thanks to our guest bloggers Kerry and Steve for help with text and authorship of some photos. After taking ages in a conga line at the fuel depot in Derby to get discount diesel we finally got to Woolworths where Steve sweet talked staff into selling them vodka before the official opening time of 12 noon. We were finally on our way after Steve and Kerry met someone they knew from Denmark. What a small world! Windjana Gorge, a 3.5 kilomtere gorge tunneled out of the Napier Range by the waters of the Lennard River, was our destination for today and after putting up our camper and tent we relaxed through the heat of the day before going for a stroll through the gorge in the late afternoon. A shady walk ... read more

DAY 213 We were all up early today as we were heading out from the Windjana camp ground, which was an excellent place to stay, Kirsty and Andrew were heading back to Derby sum 2 ½ hours away in the other direction as they needed to pick up their caravan that was being stored there. The reason for needing to put a caravan in storage is simple, most of the tracks are 4x4 only and to take a fairly conventional caravan down these tracks would be disastrous, they would just probably fall to bits or at least get grounded, some caravan manufacturers make off road Caravans but they are not cheap and you would certainly have to take one in very carefully, in order not to damage it too much. Our Wendy house on wheels is ... read more

DAY 212 We were out of bed early, again the campsite was full of movement before 7.00, it seems that people are getting up early to tackle the walk into Windjana Gorge. Which is what we intended on doing, but time escaped us as usual. While the tea was brewing I knocked up a Raisin Damper, this time splitting into 4 dough balls and placing them into the camp oven, in the hope that they would cook fairly quickly and well. After a while I checked them and turned them over to brown up and soon we were sat eating them hot with melted butter and cockys joy. After breakfast with plenty of drink and our cameras we set off to walk into the Windjana Gorge, another “wow” moment, in fact you could say that you ... read more

We took a breakfast sunrise cruise on Katherine Gorge and it’s no surprise that we thought it was fantastic like everyone else who’s ever seen it. We know you've been having a flood there but how's this for some water. During their flood in 1998 the amount of water that flowed through the gorge would have filled Sydney Harbour every 9 hours. We climbed up to the lookout then trekked back down the long track behind the gorge - boy was it hot. In Katherine it’s really sad to see so many Aborigines hanging around aimlessly in the parks and street corners. There really wasn’t much for us in Katherine itself so we headed towards WA via Gregory National Park. I love Gregory National Park Luckily for us, Joe Creek’s walk is poorly signposted which meant ... read more

From Warroora station we headed north to Port Hedland, and had a look around before continuing on to Karratha. Some of the names brought back memories from when I lived in Hedland but a lot had changed visually and I didn’t remember too much about the place. I had an opportunity to go back to some boilermaking courtesy of a contact from Pat (from the coral bay weeks), but decided we had only 5 weeks before getting to Nhulunbuy and although we could have used the income we were tied by a timeframe and working would have squeezed us a bit tight, so we moved on. There was only one place to stay in Karratha that accepted dogs and it was full, however luckily for us Kym’s good friend Wes had a house there as he ... read more

In celebration of finishing my 30-source 12 page intensive Psychology paper, I'm going to try to do my best brief description of the Outback! Before I get into the trip, though, I feel that it is necessary to give everyone a brief overview of the Aboriginal history here in Australia. I'm certainly no expert, but I've learned so much since I've been in Australia that I am embarrassed I knew nothing about before I got here. First of all, the Aborigines have been in Australia for AT LEAST 40,000 years, although some estimate that it is at least 70,000. When Captain Cook "discovered" Australia, the Indigenous peoples were viewed as savages and there was an extreme lack of understanding between the two cultures. The History between the early Europeans and Aborigines is still widely debated in ... read more

They call it the last frontier of civilised travel. The Kimberley - a place I'm sure many of you have heard of, but like me, didn't know too much about it. I had an idea - rugged wilderness, thundering waterfalls, an abundance of wildlife - basically everything you expect a remote area to be. What I didn't know was the size of it - I thought it was I small pocket of Australia inhabited by no one. It is in fact a massive area spanning 420,000 square kilometres with a population of 30,000 - the vast majority of which are localised in the 3 main towns of Broome, Wyndam and Kununurra. It is typical Australia - a vast heap of nothingness with an occasional splattering of people. As soon as I saw a few pictures of ... read more

A very pretty drive south from Kununurra, then a hard FWD track for 50km east to Purnululu NP. We found a nice bush site to set up camp and made additional shade - it was now a sunny 34º - by tying a ground sheet between the tent and some trees. There were only communal barbecue areas, so we shared a fire with an interesting party - two young women with two little boys and one man. We were up early the next day as we were still very much on central Australia time (1½ hours ahead of WA time), which was just as well as it was good to get going in the cool of the day. We drove to the northern area of the park and walked into Mini Palms Gorge (nothing special) and ... read more
