Wolfe Creek Crater National Park - Fitzroy Crossing - Geikie Gorge National Park - Tunnel Creek - Windjana Gorge - Derby From Wolfe Creek Crater we backtracked to Halls Creek to top up with fuel before continuing on to Fitzroy Crossing. Along the Tanami Road there are wrecks of a few cars that didn't make it and Kevin thought he may be able to scrounge a bolt for the camper - he got two. Fitzroy Crossing is a strange place, but it is also the best place to be based for a visit to Geikie Gorge. We have stayed here before so were aware of the local issues, but were warned when we checked into the caravan park to lock up our valuables - and especially any alcohol. We stayed for two nights to allow us ... read more

Kununurra - Bungle Bungle (Purnululu) National Park - Wolfe Creek Crater National Park We had been told that the road into the Bungle Bungles was worse than the Gibb River Road, so we left early to allow plenty of time to get there. Just as well too! The road from Kununurra to the Bungle Bungle turn-off was all bitumen and it's only 60km into the Kurrajong campground. We discovered very quickly that reports were correct - it took us two and a half hours to do 60km - it was bloody rough. The corrugations were worse than we have had the whole trip, and there was no relief, they just kept going and going. Everything was shaken up. There were some rough pot-holes, rocky patches and a few creek crossings, but the worse was the corrugates. ... read more

DAY FOUR Today we made our way back to the Gibb River Road before stopping at Galvans Gorge. We had a lovey swim there. We then continued past Mount Barnett and on to the Kalamburu Road where we headed north. Later that afternoon we arrive at Drysdale River Station, which runs 9000 head of cattle across more than 1 million acres. We had a lovely lunch and then checked into our motel style cabins for the night. The telephone box was fashioned out of an upright freezer. Oyster Bay is $30 per bottle from the bar. Cheaper than restaurants in the city. DAY FIVE Our breakfast this morning was the best so far. We left at 7:45 and continued on the Kalumburu Road before turning off to the Mitchell Plateau. After crossing the King Edward River ... read more

23rd March 2017 Up a little after 5 this morning and sorted out a few things in the cabin. Breakfast was at 6.30 am - wonderful buffet spread, lots of food but tried to keep things sensible. 7.30 saw us boarding the jet boat and heading for the Berkeley River. We travelled all the way to the entry of fresh water and on the way saw many amazing waterfalls. At Amphitheatre falls, Sam took the boat right in to the falls and we all had a refreshing shower. No photos of that because the strength of the water was fierce and we didn't want to get the cameras and other stuff wet. Such an adventure we are having and this is only our first full day! Took lots of photos and will cull out any that ... read more

With nearly eight weeks on the road, our trip is half way through and so much more to see. Having said good bye to El Questro our next stop was Kununurra. However, a short detour north to see Wyndam was a must. How sad and tired it looked. Even the pub has gone into receivership and there is little activity except at the port. Such a shame as there is much history attached to Whyndam and hopefully it will not end up a ghost town. We did have a taste of a Barra burger which was just delicious and so our trip to Whyndam was not in vein. Kununurra Having left Whyndam and feeling a little dismayed we continued on to Kununurra. What a beautiful town. Lush, tropical and green. This of course is due to ... read more

To get a head start on our trip to Derby the next day we decided to take a leisurely drive out to Willare Roadhouse (and Caravan Park) which is about 50 kilometres from Derby. It was only about 170 kilometres from Broome so we headed off late in the morning (after coffee and toast in Chinatown) and got there early afternoon. As we looked to organise a site with power we saw that there were two cyclists near a BBQ shelter. It might have been a camp kitchen under construction but it wasn't finished yet. We introduced ourselves and found out that they had cycled from Darwin to Willare (including the entire Gibb River Road) and were completing their journey in Broome. What a feat. Take a bow Scott and Kate from Hobart. Lovely people too. ... read more

Having now travelled most of the world, I thought it was time to visit one of the iconic regions in my own backyard that has so far eluded me, the Kimberley region of northern West Australia. While independent travel is normally our strong preference, Joan and I opted to join a tour group due a) the requirement for a 4WD vehicle and b) the hassle of trying to line up scarce accommodation at different stops each night. So we joined up with a 9 day APT tour, called 'El Questro, Gorges & Purnululu'. As it turned out, it was a good call - the tour comprised 18 pax, all of similar age to ourselves, with no whingers, no loudmouths (except me!) and a good compatability between all. Further, the bus was comfortable, the accommodation and food ... read more

Kimberly Expedition Cruise - the 1st part of our 5 1/2 month trip. After the expedition, we spend 5 days in Perth with Adam then fly to Amsterdam & train it to Utrecht to pick up our motor home. From there we drive towards the Scandinavian countries, including Iceland, then to the Latvian countries, Russia, Poland, northern Germany, before dropping the motor home off in Utrecht. We have already sold the motor home to a couple from Darwin so they will take it over in later September. We will then hire cars and use train travel to see the Normandy region in France, and Basque region in NW Spain. We will be flying back to Australia on 16 October. Day 1, 2 & 3 on 12 to 14 May 2014 on the Kimberley Expedition After jumping ... read more

Warmun isn't easy to find on a map, but you may know it by the name Turkey Creek. Warmun is of course the Gija Aboriginal Community, north east of Halls Creek. The journey north from Fitzroy crossing was most interesting. The landscape changed continuously, moving from the vast plains to rugged rolling rocky hills and ranges. There are also many reminders of the hazards of the outback with evidence of floods ripping up flood ways, bush/grass fires, and in fact we drove past some that were still burning, fortunately some distance from the road. Its years since we have driven a main highway with so many one way bridges, and most crossed dry sandy river beds. However, in the wet season these same rivers can carry huge water flows. We noted a lot of work has ... read more

Well folks we are coming to the end of our Kimberley Adventure along the Gibb River Road and the last place on our itinerary was Bell Gorge. Bell Gorge is touted as one of the best, prettiest Gorges on the Gibb and I have to say it certainly lives up to that reputation. We camped at the Silent Grove camping area, which we were pleasantly surprised to find not as busy as expected. Good facilities and Ron and I even got a haircut from a travelling hairdresser while here. The drive to Bell is about 30 km along a pretty good dirt road, you pass the camping area on the way in and at the end you have about a 30 minute walk, which is pretty easy except for stepping around the river pebbles in places. ... read more
