Francois Peron National Park—Denham — Minilya — Carnarvon Day 19 Tuesday 13-3-2007 Packed up camp after being inundated with ants and headed out of Bottle Bay back to Denham and thence onto Carnarvon. Got passed by two car carrying semi trailers on the way and listened to their interesting conversation on the two way radio—quite surprising for truckies it was only interspersed with the odd swear word. Rolled into Carnarvon looking like absolute ferals after 5 days or so out on Bottle Bay. Still they let us in. With the kids enrolled in SIDE we are able to get various resources through their library— some of these are “talking books”. For traveling and for keeping kids (and adults!) amused these are just an absolute godsend. We are now all waiting on our next instalment of ... read more

Slightly later start, first visited Cape Range lighthouse 1000 metres high to see fantastic views of landscape below. Then off to Milyering visitor centre, where we discovered some tame kangaroos who visit the centre regularly for refreshments. One of the kangaroos was carrying a baby joey! Then we located our own private beach in the Cape Range National Park called Turquoise Bay, which was excellent for snorkelling in the shallow warm waters. Lots of sightings of unusual tropical fish, some of the group were fortunate enough to swim above reef sharks, turtles and stingrays - a great experience. However there were a huge number of jelly fish that we tried to avoid, most lying on the shoreline. Then we had a picnic lunch on the beach in the immense heat. On our return to the bus ... read more

Tuesday 5th Dec The 3 of us drove around the tip of the coast. Our first stop was some mangroves where we saw what we thought was a snake, but it turned out to be a snake eel, burrowing into its hole. The next bay had a really good drift snorkel that we did. We saw lots of what we had done on the dive the day before. Then we drove around the corner to a sheltered bay and swam out to some big coral boulders where I saw a catfish hiding underneath and a blue spotted ray. Then some sunbathing. After Lunch we drove down to sandy bay where Teresa and I read while Tim Kite surfed, there were a couple who were over 60 there also kitesurfing and windsurfing. In the evening Tim and ... read more

The last couple of weeks have been such a giggle, we have loved every minute! so where do I start.... From Perth we picked up our 'Wicked' campervan (dolphin design-how cool) and headed north. As it was the afternoon when we picked it up, we only had a couple of hours till sunset and therefore had to get off the road (at sunrise and sunset it is dangerous to travel as all the roos and emus come out). So we just pulled up at a little outback farm where we were greated with wine and a chat with the really friendly hosts and other campers. We got ready to eat our noodles when the host obviously felt sorry for us and handed us a full plate of hotpot each.. best meal yet! The people here (out ... read more

We spent 4 days at Exmouth but it was very windy for the first 2 days. We amused ourselves by buying 2kg of beautiful fresh king prawns at only $17.00 per kilo and eating them with lots of fresh bread. (These cost about $28.00 in Melbourne and they are not this fresh) Oh, I wonder what the poor people are doing????? !! Ningaloo Reef frames the coastline from here south for 200km and the coral reef starts just 20metres from the shore. Because of the wind, we only got to go snorkelling on the reef in the National Park for the last 2 days. We donned our masks, snorkels and fins and drifted with the current along Turquoise Bay looking at all the beautiful fish and coral. We did this a few times over the 2 ... read more

After two weeks of travelling around Oz together, I left Susan to do her own thing in Perth for a while (her blog to follow...) and I went up to Exmouth (1200km from Perth) for April's wedding. It was fantastic! Exmouth is deep in outback country, with red red soil everywhere and not much else. Straight away we went on a sunset whale watching trip, which was just amazing. I saw loads of humpback whales, but no spectactular breeches (or at least none for the camera). It was a great way to catch up with April, Andrew and friends, as well as meet some of the other guests. The next day was cold and wet, apparently it rains just twice a year in Exmouth. I blame it on all the Brits invited bringing the weather with ... read more

We arrived in Coral Bay for Laura's birthday (Sun 16th) - went on a boat to see reef sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, turtles and dugongs. snorkelled with lots of fishes. nearly wet my pants when a reef shark swam past me - all i could think about was that i had cut my toe and sharks smell blood a mile off! Took Laura out for a lovely meal for her b'day. had gorgeous seafood and steak (half a cow morelike!) with a bottle of fizz and then a few drinks in the local bar (the only one!!) and a few drinks back at our hostel with the aberdeen boys and a girl from Glasgow who knows a friend of mine! (we're staying here as all the campsites are fully booked!). Drove up to exmouth - ... read more
