The most northern point that we visited was a place called Exmouth, which boasts a sub tropical warm climate all year round, and a coral reef which you can view by snorkelling directly from the beach. The area is incredibly remote at the tip of a peninsula roughly half way up the West coast, and Exmouth itself is surrounded by National Park in every direction, with rivers, gorges and unusual and exciting wildife (pretty much like most places in WA in that respect). We had a bit of a mixed bag of experiences here - some great, and some which left us lacking enthusiasm. Some made us ill. On the way to Exmouth, we stopped in for some food at the last roadhouse on the route - some 200 kms away - and we were shocked ... read more

Well, there is always a silver lining to everything! I started my PADI dive course yesterday and had ear problems even 1 foot underwater in the pool.... so going to have the dive medical this afternoon anyway, if only to find out what the problem is. Hopefully it is temporary and I can complete my dive training later in the trip. If not, well you see a lot snorkelling anyway. There are at least 2 good things as a result though - one I now have time to see some things on the west coast on the way to Perth -e.g. the stromatolites and Shark Bay / Monkey Mia (dolphins) and the Pinnacles (weird rocks near Cervantes) and two I have some time to get some photos on to the web. At long last I hear ... read more

If you were still worried, then I'm ok - the mosquitoes attack was over and maybe they were not sand flies after all because they didn't itch for too long. So on Wednesday I went on this 4WD safari tour. It was a nice day although a huge waste of money... I thought we would do some hiking but we walked for maybe 15 minutes... crossing the range with the 4WD was awesome, I admit to that. And then we also had a boat cruise in a really lovely gorge called Yardie Creek Gorge. The cakes that came with morning and afternoon tea were really tasty... and that's about it, the rest of the day was boring :-) However, every minute of watching this beautiful cristal clear water in the ocean here is amazing. In the ... read more

I invented the term to describe my unexplainable fear of fish in the sea. I love fish on my plate… and I can handle them when I swim in fresh water pool in rivers. But I can’t go snorkeling in the open sea! I did it once years ago in Eilat, but that was the only time. I came here determined to get over that. I know, they are small, they are more scared of me… but I simply couldn’t. I only enjoy the fish when there is thick glass between us, as in an underwater observatory or a glass bottom boat. Well, of course here wasn’t a good place to overcome my fear when I hear about sea snakes (more venomous than land snakes! They say they don’t attack if you don’t harass them, but ... read more

I left Perth when it started really raining, and headed into the tropical north of Australia, a land of eternal sunshine! On Friday when we left it rained pretty badly, and it rained most of the time when we were driving to our first destination, but miraculously the rain stopped when we got there. That was the Pinnacles dessert, a very strange phenomenon of stone poles, different heights, sizes and shapes, just stuck there in the middle of the sand. I can't say it's an amazing place but really interesting. We continued driving further north and stopped for the night in a tiny town called Northampton, where we stayed in a backpacker called "the old convent" and it's really a building of an old convent. It felt a bit spooky to go through the angels sculptures ... read more

Exmouth to Geraldton Not much to report about this day. We have to leave early again as we have to make 850km today. It’s my turn to ride in the passenger seat of the truck and to engage our driver in conversation to make sure that he does not fall asleep. This turns out to be very interesting as Scott and I get to share some parts of our life’s stories. In the evening we arrive at the Batavia Backpacker’s, which is situated in the building of the old Victorian hospital. A nice building, clean and simple rooms and again a big communal kitchen where we prepare our dinner. After dinner we have a couple of beers and experience some real Australian pub games. Around midnight everyone is ready to hit the beds and we retreat… ... read more

Warroora Station via Coral Bay to Exmouth Again, we have to get up early this morning as another long stint up north is waiting for us. As Christina’s and my room is right next door to the communal kitchen we wake up as the first people from our group start preparing breakfast. I remember that I made the foolish promise to cook pancakes for everyone. Well, this means playing the chef for 15 people… The first problem I come across: The eggs are frozen. *hmpf* That freezer unit on the truck seems to be operating in either one of two modes: Antarctic cold or Australian heat – we experienced that already on the previous days, having fun with frozen cucumbers and tomatoes. Scott has the great idea of melting the eggs in a water bath however ... read more

This Exmouth is north of the Tropic of Capricorn and bloody hot. A few days ago saw Dugongs in Shark Bay and close encounters with Dolphins. Here to snorkel Ningaloo Reef (1,500 km drive north of Perth) which was great. Water very cold, but variety of coral and fish superb. The scenery is very arid and scrubby and quite frankly - boring. But we have seen Roos, wallabies, emus, bustards, lots of birds and wildflowers. On our way south to Albany on the SW tip of OZ. Having a great time, but having difficulty dragging Valerie away from all the flowers! Campervan is really great, but gas diesel price here is $1.25 a litre - expensive. Would you believe we are in bed by 9pm, but up early at 5:30am Miss you all. Until next time ... read more
