Is the third time a charm? Kel and I desert our children (not that they're children), for six weeks to walk northwards through Portugal from Lisbon to Santiago. It's been more than a tough few working months. I calculated that by the middle of the year I'll have spent more than half of the year out of Australia (that's counting this trip, but still). Saudi Arabia, where the work has primarily been, is at once the most exotic and the most boring place to visit. Exotic in the sense of being foreign and boring in the sense that we commonly understand it. The four weeks in Riyadh last month was too long to spend in a city were Fridays resemble Melbourne Sundays in the 1960s. When one is living in a compound with 20 foot high ... read more

It's been quite a contrasting experience, this planning for the second camino. Firstly, it's been coming from such a long way away. In my, undoubtedly questionable, remembrance of 16 months ago, it feels like I made the decision to do the camino and left within a couple of days. That's wrong, but I don't remember counting down the days the way I have been this time - I just remember being busy and leaving. Maybe I remember it like this because of the difficulties I had with the actual trip over - no Vietnamese Visa, transferring luggage, buses that wouldn't move, broken trains, and now in memory, it all feels like it was rushed and improvised and everything happened at once. This time round, we've been counting steadily for weeks and weeks and weeks. Plane tickets ... read more

So I'm back in Australia, and you may have noticed that I didn't do any blogging for the last sections of the trip: once the road trip started, I no longer had access to the hostel computers and I quickly got out of the habit. Besides, the type of travel didn't lend itself to the type of blogging that I wanted to do. We were tourists rather than the pilgrims we had been, and that was necessary (as a transition back to the 'real world'). However, I did want to finalise the pilgramage, with a few words. I'm not sure if I've previously written this - and I can't be bothered to check - but I think the camino is not about finding a new you - it's really about unlearning a whole range of things, ... read more

Where is my mind? (The Pixies) So, here's the thing. It's now less that a week before I leave, and mixed up in all the excitement and anticipation (and let's face it - I've packed already) is a sense of ... what? Not fear, not worry... maybe the word is doubt. About myself. And I should clarify: I don't mean anything particularly about the walking,or carrying a pack or that - I mean more on my ability to KEEP MY STUFF!!!!! I'm talking about walking off and leaving my phone, toiletries, hat, sunglasses, money, pack, sense of self-worth... EVERYTHING I OWN... behind somewhere. I have form. This morning I left for work with only my phone and keys. No wallet, glasses, NOTHING. If I was a smart pilgrim missing a few things, just follow me... I'm ... read more

In the middle of my life I found myself In the midst of a dark wood wandering... (Dante's Inferno - Canto I) In a little over a week, I will be starting on the Camino Frances. The number of factors that have to come together to ensure that this would happen are multiple and seemingly unrelated: some where made by myself and my family, many were made by people who I barely know and may never meet. So a few principals of independent schools decide to change the dates for scholarship testing, some colleagues at work decide that work has to be outsourced, I overlook a small detail in the processes... Suddenly I'm in Dante's Inferno. Well maybe not suddenly in retrospect. Six months of a downward slide are apparent from the other end. From inside, ... read more

Hello and welcome to the final installment of Matt & Sharon's travel blog, coming to you from sunny ol' Melbourne town. Indulge us as we describe the last days of our trip and look back on some of the unforgettable experiences. The last time that we spoke Sharon and I were killing time before our flight back home. After finishing up at the internet cafe we wandered across the road for a bite to eat before playing pool for an hour or so. Given the Tube's propensity to be chock-a-block full at all hours of day and night, we decided to head over to Heathrow at around 3:30pm, giving us around six hours before our flight was scheduled to depart. We read newspapers, checked our emails and generally just wasted time before grabbing some dinner at ... read more

First of all, hello and welcome to Matt & Sharon's travel blog. It is the day before we leave for our European adventure, and I have to admit I'm a little nervous. The furthest I have been from home is Maroochydore on Queensland's Sunshine Coast and while Sharon has the benefit of prior overseas travel experience, she is still a bit nervous as well. Having said that, we are both very excited to be spending some time overseas and hopefully this blog will keep those that are interested up to date as to where we are, what we are up to, and whether or not we have succumbed to frostbite. We are flying out of Tullamarine tomorrow at 5pm and arriving at Athens at 7am on Friday local time; 23 hours in transit. We have plans ... read more

Its been the last times that have been getting me. It has been 150 days, well a lot longer than that but, 150 days since I started counting down and now I find myself with no more days to count. I will be boarding my plane in 15 hours time. Although I wrote about most of what lead me up to taking the trip and how I went about it in my last blog post I felt like I should write another before I left. The reason I felt so compelled to do so is that what I have felt since writing my last post leading up to now has been so profoundly different that I didn't think my last posted adequately described what I have been experiencing as the preparation for my trip came down ... read more

It's been one manic month. Vacating my apartment in Port Melbourne and moving back to the family home in the burbs, travel vacs, training my replacement at work, a market stall to sell my clothes, TEFL course locked and loaded, farewell drinks ... So now I'm off! What's the plan? How long will I be gone? What will I do for money, for work? So many questions... The plan is to backpack SE Asia - Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia ... and Vietnam if I have time. Then I'm off to India (via a visit to my good friends Donna & Scott in Singas). In India I'll be volunteering in a village called Shillong in the North-East corner of India with a group of Melbourne teachers (including my uncle Kev). We'll be working with a school and ... read more
